This is so frustrating, I originally built this computer with a HD Radeon 5770 but that card ended up being a dud so I returned it and used a friends Radeon X1900, both cards loaded and played ME1 and ME2 just fine.
Now I have this brand new 5870 and ME2 ran fine but I wanted to back and play through ME1 again but when I load the game the display cuts off, I can hear the game sounds and can press buttons to get to the menu but I can't see anything I can't CTRL/ALT/DELETE out of it or alt tab, nothing, I'm just forces to press reset.
I bought both ME1 & 2 off Steam and checked the integrity of the files etc. I have the latest radeon drivers, I'm just at my wits end on this one.
Display cuts off when starting ME1

Have you re-run the config utility for ME1 since replacing the card? If not, do so.
Also, try using older drivers. Newer drivers are tweaked to provide benefits with newer games, leaving older games like ME1 a bit flakey.

Because you use Steam, i cant answer that. Its normally located in the mass effect folder;
masseffect\\binaries\\masseffectconfig.exe
Dont know how steam sets itself up. I dont use it.

Update: Well I found where Steam tucked away all those files and ran the config, but something important struck me so I manually clicked on Windows Update (since that sometimes finds files that it doesn't automatically get) and apparently I'm missing service pack 1 for my Win7 x64 system, so I'm installing that now and gonna see if it helps resolve the issue.
