revenant/geth rifle i like - though that's for personal opinion and gameplay. Rapid fire, but still moderatly accuracte.

I prefer getting closer to enemies, and taking them down, fast.
And, Hey! I like fire!

For other classes I don't usually get AR training so the point is moot. I think I'd just about rather have the Geth AR or the Collector AR instead of either of those for the relatively steady rates of fire.
Edit: I've never been a fan of the feel of the Vindicator in game no matter what the class. I just never worked for me. I don't mind a Shuriken SMG but the Vindy is off in a manner that I obviously can't explain well.

Why does it have to be Disruptor for one and AP for the other? What if I'm fighting collectors? Disruptor wouldn't help much there. But AP would.
But... Mattock. It sounds like a real gun. Not sure what the Vindicator sounds like, but for me its sound is the major drawback. Otherwise that too is a beast of a gun.

I also like how the mattock shoots, it reminds me of the predator but longer range, more ammo, and more damage. Still as a battle rifle it doesn't feel like an assault rifle to me. So my second favorite is probably the vindicator.

As for ammo, it's pointless to only stick to one type unless it's warp ammo / AP and you want to spend points elsewhere. For example, disruptor makes geth levels ridiculously easy but doesn't do much to organics.
For every situation there's always a certain ammo power that is better than the rest, which makes the squad versions of ammo more valuable most of the time as soldier (as opposed to everyone in your squad having a different kind of ammo, which is a jack of all trades but master of none... you're better off having more than one set of ammo and switching depending on situation).
On my soldier playthroughs, I always get max incendiary and disruptor squad versions. Disruptor against synthetics and incendiary against organics. The bonus powers aren't that helpful since you'll be using adrenaline rush most of the time, so I guess you could replace incendiary with AP ammo (though I prefer the former).

So for the soldier class in general, I would then recommend Inferno with Squad Disruptor or Squad Cryo. Enemy protections strip rather easily so the key depends on what you want to do to the enemy with CC abilities from ammo powers.
Also, Tungsten and Heavy Warp ammo seem to work very well on the Tempest as an Assault Sentinel.
And lastly I've enjoyed using the GPR with Inferno as a soldier, so I'd recommend it for anyone to try out not picking the Revvy.

Mattock (best rifle) with Warp ammo (the most powerful ammo power). It's freaking amazing.
Hmm...
Which class(es) and powers do you recommend that combo with?

Revenant + inferno. This gun has "personality" unlike "some" overpowered paid DLC weapon that takes all the challenge away from the game + it has no personality
Have to agree with this... 80 round nonstop barrage of firey death. It's fun to use something different once in a while though.

Well GPR with Inferno is different enough, according to what I've read; and/or going with a Claymore Soldier.

Mattock with disruptor ammo. I never spray and pray either, I tend to use it in a "semi-auto" fashion....barely tapping the trigger, control burst I guess.
