A search of the forum for the error message I get did not produce results. I have owned this game since its first release. I occasionally play it and I am finally getting to the finish, however, I tried to load it up today and it wont play. Says it is not able to autenticate the cd! I take it out, look it over for scratches, none found, so I pop it back in and it still won't play. That is frustrating. I purchased the game I would like to play it at my leasure, not when the security bot decides. I am sure since it is likely a rootkit security feature that something has happened to my windows install and the only recourse is to wipe and restore. Well, ****** on that.
**RANT**
Some may choose to steal the game, but guess what, it was still hacked and stolen, and there has never been a piece of software that couldn't be hacked. This autentication nonsense is enless frustration for gamers and does no good. How much does it cost to put the junk security software on the disk vs just taking the inevitable "loss'(if you can call it that)? The hackers and theves were never going to buy the game. And those who do to get the initial copy hack it for the fun. Why feed the addiction at everyones expense?

Mass Effect 2 PC Technical Support (Spoilers Warning)
This forum is for fans and owners of Mass Effect 2 on the PC to assist each other with technical questions. Official game support is provided by Electronic Arts, but fans are encouraged to try to assist each other here.
If you want to rant, take it up with EA, not us. We're just other game owners willing to give up our free time in order to help out others, and dont have to put up with bad manners.
There is no rootkit on the ME2 disk.
Have you considered the possibility that your drive may be on its way out? Did you try other games and they work fine?
Did you insert the disc and hit play immediately, or fire up the launch menu and then insert the disk and hit play?
Or did you put the disk in, let it get recognised by Windows (5-10 seconds), and then try and play?

Ugh, this is always annoying, isn't it?
You could try cleaning the disc. (I'm no expert, but the tips I've heard are: use a soft cloth with just water, not something abrasive like a paper towel; and do it gently in straight lines, apparently going a circular motion is more likely to do something bad.) Though, if you've been storing it away in a case, no idea why it would need that in the first place.
If it doesn't clear up, I'd contact EA Support. I don't know what is or isn't in their power to do for ME2 specifically, but I know for some other games with some tech supports, they will give out no-CD executables if you can prove to their satisfaction that yes, you really did buy the game, and yes, their super-awesome-DRM really is *shock* locking you out as it was designed to do.
As far as I know, there is nothing in the ME2 DRM that could possibly be called a "rootkit." A rootkit is, in simple terms, a deep hook into your OS, typically installed without your knowledge/permission. ME2 has a simple disk-check that does not extend beyond its own executable.
