The ability to post HTML tags in the forums was removed yesterday. This means no more embedding videos.

Was this some sort of bandwidth issue?

It was disabled intentionally because it was a security risk. <embed> and <iframe> tags, used to embed videos, and other HTML tags can be used maliciously for purposes of Cross Site Scripting (XSS). So far we had only seen people exploit this to be an annoyance and not do anything severe.

Any way to bring it back without any security risk?

Some sites allow tags that, when you put the url in between, embeds a YouTube video. I imagine this would be more secure - is it possible that this could be implemented on the Bioware forums?

I know this is a crazy thought but you could just hotlink the video instead. That is far more considerate of fellow users, too.

I don't see how that would be more considerate. Embeded videos don't play automatically, and they are more convenient than links - you can watch the video without leaving the forum (or opening a new window). In addition, as the video won't load untill you click to play it, it won't affect the bandwidth load of loading the page with the embeded video on it any more than a simple image. Moreover, with an embeded video, you get a still from the video on screen, that allows you a preview fo what you are about to watch, wheras a link is only as descriptive as whoever is posting it cares to make it.

On a thread like the "What are you currently listening to?" thread in the off-topic forum, embedded videos really livened up the thread, and made discovering new music easy and fun.

It takes more bandwidth to load images than text. Many images means much bandwidth. That's inconsiderate. It doesn't matter that the video itself isn't loading. And that isn't even touching on the issue of abusive images that you can't guard yourself against.

All links open in new windows by default. It is true you will have to load a YouTube page but you won't have to reload the forum.

YouTube offers no guarantee of correlation between audio and video. The preview image is perhaps the least telling part about any given video. A link can be less descriptive but if you list the artist and the track it will be as descriptive as the vast majority of videos.

I lobbied for this more than a year ago. I'm thrilled to see it go.

Yeah, they should put that.

It's less considerate.

This is a web 2.0 site and a social network. Images are commonplace and actual images, as opposed to embedded links to youtube, can be massive.

Web 2.0 is everything that was ever wrong with the Internet.

I second the motion to get the videos back with atleast the method, it would also remove any possible security risks

and atm the "what are you listening to" thread in off-topic is pretty bad :(
