I've been wondering this since i played the demo and i've been able to find no other threads about it.
Simply, why is carver always my rival and bethany my friend?

I think he's just naturally more competitive/antagonistic (as one reviewer put it). It doesn't mean he hates you; he's more of a rival than Bethany is (something MIke Laidlaw said in the livestream).

Because Carver is the sibling that's always living under his big brother & sisters shadows. Obviously some resentment towards Hawke would appear.

Says something in the codex about how he never really got as close to you as bethany did.
Guess he just sees the world differently

Because he still can't grow a glorious beard like you can.

I guess you dont have brothers...

Between me and my brothers, we all like each other, but that doesn't mean we don't compete on a fairly regular basis.

I'm sure it's got something to do with them wanting to give you a sense of history with these people. You can read about your siblings in the codex in the demo. You were always a better fighter than him as a rogue or a warrior, and as a mage he blames you and Bethany for the fact that your family was always on the run, disrupting his life.
Both your siblings have set personalities that inform their opinions on you - you can either work to change it consciously, or see if your decisions will make them change their minds about you.

Because Freud says we all lust after our opposing-gender parent, and our same-gender siblings and same-gender parent are competition.

Also, a real answer: Carver's codex says he feels inadequate compared to his siblings.

The Hawke's are a family of apostates. And carver is probably pro-chantry. It depends on you whether he stays a rival or becomes a friend, but i think Carver is most likely to stand against his own family. Beth on the other hand is an apostate, so she is in best family tradition. You can of course decide what Marian/Garrett is like, but I think the game assumes at start you are more loyal to your family than anyone else, like Bethany and unlike Carver.

It all makes sense now. They just want to bork their mother.

Freud is wrong in this case, since Carver is rival to either femHawke or maleHawke. So that's not likely the reason.

Carver doesn't have a sword as big as Hawke.

Know what I'm sayin'?

Carver's codex entry states that he was a bit jealous of his Hawke and Bethany. Hawke because he was never as skilled a fighter as his brother (if hawke is a warrior) and Bethany for having the gift of magic. He still loves his sibling but it seems he might have some self-esteem issues. Understandable when you have 2 very awesome siblings. In other words, the classic living in the shadows of other family members dilemma.

Because he's your brother. You have an antagonistic relationship with him and you are always competing.

It's really common in JRPGs which is probably where this was ripped from that characters don't like each other, but they do respect each others abilities.

You sure like to be dramatic?

Sibling rivalry is ripped of the japanese? Guess brothers who are argueing alot are looking too many anime then.

Ah, sibling rivalry is not a JRPG thing. Its a trope that can be found in all stories and most importantly, real life. Hence why its so common. Bioware decided to give both a friendly and rival sibling just to increase replay value. You can, of course, make Bethany or Carver friendly or a rival as you choose.

So if you are bugged by Carver being your rival than work on making him friendly.

And I'll make sure that he hates me even more for being so much more cooler in the actual game.He may be able to use cool swords but my Hawke can use magic.

You should play the demo and read his codex, it's pretty interesting and explains your question in detail
