I suppose the only way to find out exactly what his issues are with main hawke would be to play the game as a mage.

Because Freud says we all lust after our opposing-gender parent, and our same-gender siblings and same-gender parent are competition.

Also, a real answer: Carver's codex says he feels inadequate compared to his siblings.

Freud is wrong in this case, since Carver is rival to either femHawke or maleHawke. So that's not likely the reason.

He's probably like my youngest brother, while Bethany's more like my middle brother.  My youngest brother does not take to authority well, and being the oldest child in our family by 8 years, I was a semi-authority figure when he was growing up so our relations have always been rather chilly.  (It doesn't help that we're both a bit tempermental/prickly and highly opinionated.)  My middle brother, on the other hand, is a very mild, sweet, even-tempered, all around nice kid (the sort of person that *everyone* sorta likes).  Kind of like Bethany, perhaps.

Ah, sibling rivalry is not a JRPG thing. Its a trope that can be found in all stories and most importantly, real life. Hence why its so common. Bioware decided to give both a friendly and rival sibling just to increase replay value. You can, of course, make Bethany or Carver friendly or a rival as you choose.

So if you are bugged by Carver being your rival than work on making him friendly.

I addressed that in the first bit. I was refering to the rivalry/friendship design and people calling rivalry hatred. Which is why I used the JRPG example. Rivalry relationships are almost a JRPG cliche.

Bioware and their worn out cliches. Canceling my pre order.

You say this like you didn't cancel your order months ago...or even made one...

Unless it was a joke and then my sarcasm detector has broken. More on topic though, just because he's a rival doesn't mean he hates you, just views things differently.

He preordered 60 copies just so he could viciously cancel one every time he heard something he didn't like.

Oh, I didn't realize Carver and Bethany get codex entries. I'd checked in the beginning, and all I saw was the info about Hawke. Is this added in the second half of the demo? : O If so I'll have to do another playthrough to check it out. I think this is gonna be my seventh time playing it through now XD.

Well since he is the youngest brother he may be a bit spoiled too. I hear that happens in families with more than 2 children, but I couldn't know since I merely have a younger sister, who wasn't spoiled at all. Well, neither of us was.

He hates you because he was the only one not to be in the concept art group photo because he slept in. His older sibling was supposed to wake him for the photo shoot.

Wow, really?

In my family (same structure as yours, I'm the youngest, but I'm a girl), my eldest is the mild, sweet and sensible one. He has the authority but tends to be rather cool and calm, whereas me and my middle brother constantly had power struggles where, to be honest, I didn't want to listen to anything he said. Actually to be honest, I never had a good relationship with either, I didn't like the authority they attempt to exert sometimes. But they were pretty close with one another, which is reflective to how Bethany and Hawke are close but Carver is far from either (which is slightly weird because him and Beth are twins).

I find the extent to which Hawke's relationship with his family is predefined a bit offputting.

Sibling rivalry is ripped of the japanese? Guess brothers who are argueing alot are looking too many anime then.

Cain and Abel was ripped off from the Japanese.

Of course they were!  Didn't you ever play Fire Emblem?  They were the red and green cavaliers.

Yeah, basically the codex said Carver was kind of a character stuck in the middle of things. If Hawke is a mage, he's never really been able to relate to either of his siblings, because they're both mages and he's not. If Hawke's not a mage, he was still overshadowed by Hawke, and in an entirely different situation than Bethany. You've gotta feel for the guy a little bit, he's probably a bit lonely in his own family. :(

its sorta like you have a good friend but your a bit jealous of cause they are smarter/cool/have an amazing beard. You still like them but your jealous. Carver has to put up with a brother/sister who will be the champion and who bosses him around and has an insane nutella fetish!

Try living with that my friend!

He hates you because he secretely wants to make out with Hawke but since their siblings he can't so he acts like Hawkes sour grapes.

Honestly though probably has a big brother attraction

Okay okay okay I'll be serious. He probably envies the attention Bethany and Hawke got.
