DA sold because it tapped an ignored market of "oldschool nerds" and by changing it, it's just in direct competition with everything else.

Totally spot on here. Couldnt agree more.

I think its a mistake to try and make it more 'welcoming' as it sold because it wasnt!! If it hadnt sold then by all means chenge the hell out of it but it did!!!

That's what's confusing me.  Dragon Age was a come-out-of-nowhere hit -- why not simply build upon that?

Because the console version was poor. There's no way DA2 would have sold on consoles well without changes.

I was quite happy with DA:O on the PS3. I gather that the graphics on the 360 however were subpar, Gamespot did the unusual thing of given the PS3 version an extra half point above the 360 version for this reason.

The only thing that allows me to cut Bioware a break and not totally nerd rage on DA2 is that unlike ME2 right up front in their initial press releases et al they made it clear where they were taking the franchise. Day 1 there was huge outcry on these boards and the message was pretty much suck it up.

"Unlike ME2"? Christina Norman told us how equipment was going to work before ME2 shipped. I'm pretty sure we were talking about it on the forum.

In my post Day 1 clearly doesn't mean sometime before shipment, it means right away. My opinion is that Bioware has been much more upfront and clear about the extent of the changes to DA2 than ME2. The very first press release about DA2 with nothing more than concept art, I remember the button masher alarms going off in my head. I didn't have the same level of foreboding with ME2. Anyway I'm trying to cut Bioware a break, get off my back! :bandit:

Look, I played the Demo about ten times now...

The graphics are good. Better than Origins. The gameplay is enjoyable and the fact the main char has a voice of its own gave him a lot personality.

Some people have problems with change. When something they like change, they have tendency to hate it without giving a deeper look. I remember similiar reactions to DA:O... To ME2 and so many games. I even remember people talking trash about Baldur's Gate 2.

My point is that not all change is bad. Keeping the mind open can lead to interesting paths.

And that's all I have to say, really. To discuss the OP opinion woudn't lead anywhere.

I agree with most of that. One thing EA may be overlooking is DA sold because it tapped an ignored market of "oldschool nerds" and by changing it, it's just in direct competition with everything else.

Problem is, if you buy and play the game anyway EA have very little reason to change. If however DA2 were to bomb, you would see frantic scrabling and changes more in line with the original design.

Sry but I disagree, if DA2 bombs then that means nothing but the death of the Dragon Age Franchise.

*whine whine whine **** moan I am whining about a demo which has the sole idea of showing off gameplay and a fighting system without revealing anything of the story* Real gameplay and RP-ing will come with the complete game, have no fear.

1. Please, step down off of your soapbox.

We're all adults, here. (well, most of us...I think.) So, I think we can dispense with the persistent assumption that we hate Dragon Age 2 simply because we're "afraid of change."

Christ, I am sick to my stomach of that pathetic blanket statement that keeps getting thrown around.

I think it's fair to say that we realize that not all change is bad. Though I'm sure there are a number of people who aren't willing to give Dragon Age 2 a second chance, those who are either will download the DA2 demo, or have already.

Personally, I was more than willing to give Dragon Age 2 a second chance. Hell, later on this evening, I'm going to give it a second and third chance to change my mind. I saw what it was like as my favorite class (Rogue), with my favorite weapon set-up (dual-wielding). As ridiculous as the Rogue's combat moves looked, I have somewhat higher hopes for Warrior and Mage.

2. Somehow, I doubt these so-called "similar reactions" to Dragon Age: Origins were anything of the sort. Dragon Age: Origins wasn't a sequel, radically different from its beloved predecessor; Dragon Age 2, on the other hand, is just that.

Have to agree,in part, with Valmann... to say he is getting on a "soapbox" when he is simply stating his point of view is hardly accurate. I could say that for 90% of posts. People do not like change and for some, not all, any change will be highlighted and complained about. The demo focused these views as it showed mostly visual changes. A lot of people don't like these changes, a lot do. I still feel that the core fun gaming experience is still there even if I don't like some of the visuals.

One of the main problems I see is that it's Dragon Age 2. If they called it something else,  "The rise of Hawke" or something people wouldn't associate the two games so closely and in my opinion would accept it more readily.
