I think mass effect 2 proves that video games are art. Very few games evoke as much emotion as mass effect does. From project overlord, to just helping random people. I cant think of any other game out there that does this.

There's probably a few others out there, but not many. All I know is that ME2's emotional impact on me is one of the reasons I keep coming back to play it again. It's one of those rare gems that shows that videogames may one day eclipse films in their power to move the audience.

A lot of this, I think, comes from the fact that you aren't a spectator, and suddenly your own personal views and who you are as a person are put in the spotlight.  Take, for example, the decision at the end of "A House Divided."  Extra Credits of The Escapist covers this topic very well here.

Yeah, it's true, and it's one of the few games in which I actually follow the development.
Hopefully ME3 will top the other 2. Then I'll be happy. :D

Personally, I'd pick just about any other Bioware game out there before ME 2 as an example of "video games as art" ME 2 had a couple of good moments (like Mordin and Tali's loyalty missions) but never really gets me thinking of it as anything but "just a video game" DAO, the first ME game, KOTOR, the BG games, even Jade Empire are much better at carrying me away by its storylines and characters.

But yeah as far as video games trancending their mediums, no one does it better than Bioware. Just, not this time.

Yeah I am a big fallout fan but Mass Effect beats it by a wide margin when it comes to storytelling and emotion. God I wish Bethesda would hire Bioware writers or at least professional writers on the fallout forum they said they just have programmers do the writing on their free time.

Heres for appreciating the awesome writers that work on Mass Effect!

<_< DAO is much better at putting me to sleep.  As for the others (with the exception of ME1) I lol'd.

Yes I agree I can't think of any other games that evoke as much emotion as mass effect 2, but correct me if I am wrong.

When I play Mass Effect, i get into the game on a high level. Yes, an emotional one because it conflicts real things. Mass Effect 2 sometimes made me just sit there and thing about what choice I should make or how am I going to get over casualties. This game is amazing

Meh, there's no "wrong" or "right" when it comes to what evokes emotion in a given person.  I just say ME 2 didn't really do it for me.  It was a video game to me, and little more.

Mass Effect was the sole reason I stayed a gamer. Back when I was deciding between Mass Effect and Bioshock, I was ready to sell my 360 and find something else in my life like full time anime or manga instead of games. Now, I am in love with the series and it revived my love for gaming. I still watch anime and read manga but I will never abandon gaming, all thanks to Bioware.

Braid is more "emotional" than ME2. Seriously? Shepard has all the emotion of a brick wall.

Good one bog. Talimancer myself by the way.

Anyway, while ME does have a damn good emotional impact (Except for 3-emotions Shepard), it's more videos like this one: , and some fan-fics that have the real emotional stuff to me.

I'm a huge Tali fan and have romanced her everytime, but I hate the term Talimancer.

Really? I don't think it's a negative term. It simply implies that you have 'manced Tali. Some people use it negatively sure, but the same can be said for the term 'Commie' and I embrace that term fully.

That's kind of the price you pay with a customizeable main character--giving him/her a set personality would defeat the purpose.

Lost Odyssey is a JRPG from the creator of Final Fantasy, and it has way more emotional depth than Mass Effect 2 (specifically due to the exceptionally beautifuly written "Thousand Years of Dreams" short stories written by Kiyoshi Shigematsu and interspersed throughout the game). Rage, BSN. Rage.

Hard to rage against somebody's personal opinion about a game I've never played, bro. :/

Of course, why would you. It's a JRPG, and not Bioware. :police:

I don't find Mass Effect very emotional, though when I lost Zaeed and Legion in my canon playthrough, I was a bit sad, especially sinds Zaeed was one of my favorite characters.

Other than that, I don't get very emotional over videogames, books or movies. Must be a defect in my genes.

I played the game. I agree, some of those stories are really beautiful.

I tend to miss out on most JRPGs because I don't have a Playstation.

Can't really say I worship Bioware because I didn't like DA:O that much.

One of the beautiful ironies is that it's Xbox 360 exclusive, but that's a totally different topic.

I actually don't have one of those, either.  In fact, I don't even have a TV.

Thus, I am restricted to PC titles, and due to budget and hardware limitations, only purchase about one or two games a year, and even then only ones that are highly reccommended by friends.  I can't simply buy/rent stuff on a whim, so my gaming experience is rather limited.

But I really liked ME2.  Call me a n00b, if you will.
