Ted Shepard, Infiltrator, Paragonish, Orphan, Sole Survivor
1) Act as a benevolent patriarch. You, for all intents and purposes, are your crew's father. Act like it. This means listening to their concerns, gently nudging them in the right direction, and, if absolutely necessary, drawing the line. This also means holding yourself to a higher standard than you hold anyone else.
2) Help as many as possible, hurt as few as you can. This said, some people must be killed, even if they don't see you coming. Greater good.
3) Accept the help of anyone who offers. But only trust those who have earned it. (My Shepard was convinced Miranda was the saboteur from the beginning of ME2 until her death in the suicide mission.)
4) Don't play favorites. She is either your love interest or a worthy member of this team. She is never both. (This rule began after Shepard's fear of losing Ashley led directly to Kaidan's death.)
5) Those who surrender to your mercy will be shown your mercy, unless you are absolutely convinced that they will attack again.
6) You can be polite, but you owe nothing to Cerberus. Especially the collector base.
7) Side trips are taken only if they are essential to the mission on hand. (I did 8 of the ten loyalty missions because they would result in my team playing their "a" game when it came to the final battle. No distractions. I didn't do Tali's or Jacob's because Jacob had already accepted his father's death, and Tali would be vindicated in the end either as a hero if she survived or a martyr if she didn't (she didn't).
Commander Ted Shepard keeps losing people he cares about: His family, Akuze, Jenkins, Kaiden, half of his crew in the abduction, half his team on the suicide mission. Having never had a family himself, he tries to act like he imagines a father would, with his crew/squad as his children. He has a massive crush on Ashley, but keeps it to himself because she is/was his subordinate. His crush on Ashley led to Kaidan's death. His fling with Liara led to the death of half his crew(went to say goodbye before leaving for the suicide mission). His fling with Jack may have cost Miranda her life. He also regrets the deaths of Tali and Grunt, asking himself why he sent children into battle. He does not regret Thane's death, as he feels it was the honorable way to go.
The only true friends he has left are Garrus and Mordin. He fears losing them too.
He fights to avenge those that he lost. He fights to make his survival worth it in the face of their deaths.
But mostly, although she'll never know it, he fights for Ashley.
