Greetings and salivations!

In this thread, Goodwood would like to get an idea of what philosophies and aphorisms that the various Shepards out there ascribe to, even if only in their own mind. This can range from short sayings to long soliloquies. Goodwood will kick things off:

Kiria Shepard, Infiltrator, Colonist/War Hero:

1. Help given is help earned (i.e., help anyone you can, cos they might be able to hlep you later on).
2. Tracers work both ways.
3. When in Rome, do as the Romans do (especially on Tuchanka, since krogan respect strength and assertiveness).
4. There are no bad crews, only bad leaders.
5. Friendly fire isn't.
6. Two (bullets) in the chest are worth one in the head.

1: If it's worth doing, it's sure as hell worth doing right.
2: Do what you can with what you have where you are
3: S*** rolls down hill and will exponentially gain volume and momentum the further it rolls
4: Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the blind obedience of fools
5: If it's stupid but it works, it's not stupid.
6: A man will fight for many things, for youth, for his beliefs, for the tear on a golden cheeked child, I would mud wrestle my own mother for an amusing alarm clock and a sackful of Amusing Fornax mags

- Never harm the innocent.
- Show mercy to those who genuinely regret their (bad) actions.
- Show none to those who don't.
- Show respect unless it clearly isn't deserved.
- Be kind, but don't be a push over.

Basically my Shepard is nice to those who deserve it but a complete bastard to those who don't. He will show respect to those such as the Council, but won't let them get away with BS, he doesn't have any time for TIM, but is willing to give the Cerberus crew a chance and so on.

Aleksandr Shepard, Infiltrator, Paragade in all but name, Earthborn War Hero.
- Fock the no harming innocent rule.
- Go Genophage!
- Be nice to Old Friends.
- Be a real **** to people who deserve it.
- Thane is damn good at philosophy.
- Capitalists and Christians, will not be treated with respect.
- If Tali, Garrus, Thane, Mordin, Legion or Zaeed says something, listen to their advice and act on it. In that order. Except for Garrus and Tali. They're at the same ranking when it comes to being advisors.

Mae Shepard, Infiltrator, Paragon (but sliding toward Renegade on occasion), Spacer(?)/Sole Survivor
-It's never acceptable to involve innocent civilians in a conflict.
-Protect the crew if at all possible. Nobody should be left behind. (She lost Mordin in the Suicide Mission and it hit her hard.)
-Violent, maybe even cruel methods are acceptable if it protects the above two. (...Or if you're really, really pissed off.)
-Don't give up on relationships just after a bad fight or two.
-Newer generations shouldn't be held accountable for what their ancestors did. (This applies to the Turians, Krogan, etc...)
-Try to help people as much as possible.
-Try to accept help as much as possible. Except...
-Cerberus isn't to be trusted! They killed my fellow soldiers!!

- Everybody lives - aka whatever results in the least casualties is the right choice.
- Mercy is not a weakness, nor is accepting help when offered.
- Trust your instincts and those of the people around you.
- Trust others - but don't be blind.
- Respect cuts both ways - respect your crew/squad and earn theirs in return.
- Stick to your principles but be open to other outlooks.
- It's not crazy if it works.
- See the person, not the species.
- Never loose sight of the mission.
- Remember that words are sometimes a better weapon than an assault rifle (and much easier to get through c-sec customs)

In my head she's someone who was deeply affected by what happened on Akuze, before that she was a regular grunt just following in her parents footsteps, after it things changed.

Ted Shepard, Infiltrator, Paragonish, Orphan, Sole Survivor
1)  Act as a benevolent patriarch.  You, for all intents and purposes, are your crew's father.  Act like it.  This means listening to their concerns, gently nudging them in the right direction, and, if absolutely necessary, drawing the line.  This also means holding yourself to a higher standard than you hold anyone else.
2)  Help as many as possible, hurt as few as you can.  This said, some people must be killed, even if they don't see you coming.  Greater good.
3)  Accept the help of anyone who offers.  But only trust those who have earned it.  (My Shepard was convinced Miranda was the saboteur from the beginning of ME2 until her death in the suicide mission.)
4)  Don't play favorites.  She is either your love interest or a worthy member of this team.  She is never both.  (This rule began after Shepard's fear of losing Ashley led directly to Kaidan's death.)
5)  Those who surrender to your mercy will be shown your mercy, unless you are absolutely convinced that they will attack again.
6)  You can be polite, but you owe nothing to Cerberus.  Especially the collector base.
7)  Side trips are taken only if they are essential to the mission on hand.  (I did 8 of the ten loyalty missions because they would result in my team playing their "a" game when it came to the final battle.  No distractions.  I didn't do Tali's or Jacob's because Jacob had already accepted his father's death, and Tali would be vindicated in the end either as a hero if she survived or a martyr if she didn't (she didn't).

Commander Ted Shepard keeps losing people he cares about:  His family, Akuze, Jenkins, Kaiden, half of his crew in the abduction, half his team on the suicide mission.  Having never had a family himself, he tries to act like he imagines a father would, with his crew/squad as his children.  He has a massive crush on Ashley, but keeps it to himself because she is/was his subordinate.  His crush on Ashley led to Kaidan's death.  His fling with Liara led to the death of half his crew(went to say goodbye before leaving for the suicide mission).  His fling with Jack may have cost Miranda her life.  He also regrets the deaths of Tali and Grunt, asking himself why he sent children into battle.  He does not regret Thane's death, as he feels it was the honorable way to go.

The only true friends he has left are Garrus and Mordin.  He fears losing them too.

He fights to avenge those that he lost.  He fights to make his survival worth it in the face of their deaths.

But mostly, although she'll never know it, he fights for Ashley.

Dave Shepard, Soldier, Paragade, Earthborn, Ruthless.

1. Karma is the way. (Not being a ass to everyone can go a long way)
2. No one is truly innocent (We all have skeleton in our closet. Even Shepard)
3. Everyone deserve a second chance (With my Shepard background he know the meaning with this)
4. Your most powerful weapons are the forces you lead (Teamwork)
5. Trust no one until proven trustworthy (Only a fool would trust a stranger)
6. Never promise something you can´t hold (The text say it all)
7. My enemy's enemy is my friend (Working with Cerberus for the moment)
8. Everyone have a "family" (If your enemy is prying for his live and saying he have a family.
Just remember everyone has one)
9. If all fail use Cain (Last resort)

So this is my Shepard 9 commitments. Even that my Shepard is a earth/ruthless doesn´t mean that he is a ****. He cares about the people close to him and he would gladly sacrifice himself for them.

Marc-Antoine Shepard, Infiltrator, Spacer, Sole-Survivor, Paragon-ish.

- Stealth and Range go together like Reach an Flexibility.
- They get one chance at retribution.
- They kill one of ours, they die.
- The rule is: Never Fail.
- They betray you in the past they will do so again.
- A friend in need is a friend indeed.
- Those who remain unseen get the most done.
- There are few constants in this universe: Life, Death, Love, Hate and Enemies.
- As long as theres two people left on the planet, someone is going to want someone dead. Or they want to bed them. Either way works.
- Those looked down upon are the nicest people in the galaxy.
- There is always a bigger fish.
- Let the wind blow. Adapt. Adjust. Survive.
- Sometimes, less is more.
- More can also be less.
- There is no good or evil. No black and white. Only a pure, omnipresent chaos.

“We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. For he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother; be never so vile. This day shall gentle his condition. And gentlemen everywhere now abed shall think themselves accursed they were not here, and hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks that fought with us upon this day.” - Marc-Antoine Shepard to his crew before the final battle against the reapers.

Diana Shepard, Colonist/War Hero:

The universe will often meet your expectations if you look for ways for them to be met.
All life is precious. Only kill with precision, care and deliberation.
No one species deserves a higher place than any other.

I think those are the important ones. There's also the minor tenet of "asari rock."

Jane Shepard - Ruthless - Colonist

1.) The galaxy is a battlefield, life is a war.
2.) Only the strong survive.
3.) Carry a big stick, and use it - a lot.

^^^ pretty much sums it up for her. She pretty much wants to be queen of the universe and does whatever she thinks will make her powerful. Be it by facilitating conflict, shooting friends in the back, or allying herself with other equally maniacal individuals like Illusive Man and Cerberus.

Darrell Shepard:

1) Killing something or someone in fear or enjoyment only is foolish. There must be good practical reasons to take a life.
2) Life is a negotiation. No one will give you anything for free.
3) If necessary, sacrifices must be made for the greater good. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

I have often been called a contrarian, so i ask for your forgivness in advance for how i go about this.

My Shepard Commander's 'Philosophy of Life' is akin to my own:

"In this world the highest aim a person can set for themselves, is to find a balance betwixt the concept of 'Never say never' and having a 'Code of conduct' which is second to none..." Especially, if you are promoted to the ranks of the Spectres ^_^

"I have to ask you a question, is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?

No says the man in Cerberus, it belongs to humanity.

No says the man at the Citadel, we have long disimissed this claim of 'Sweat'.

No says the man in the Collector Station, it is pointless and we are your genetic destiny.

But I chose differently, I chose...

Renegade."

1) Always assume that you are the biggest badass in the universe. If proven otherwise find a create to hide behind and repent reload.
2) If a particular NPC is not a part of your crew or a friend to your crew member, he is your enemy.
3) Show no mercy or compassion to your enemies unless it have a bad effect on your crew.
4) A friend of my friend is my friend, everyone else can go out the airlock.
5) Joker is the only person you can trust, because he cant run away from you.
6) The ME universe consist of more then Normandy, show respect to the aliens.
7) If some aliens are putting pressure on you, you should push them back 100 times harder.
8) Dont repeat same mistakes you did in previous game.
9) Saving the drowning is the job of the drowning, even in space.
10) Dont trust anyone who earns more money then you do by cheating.
11) Not all Asari are prostitutes and hookers, some of them work as target dummy's.
12) Dont trust Asari, but make sure to take full advantage of their service when available.
13) Renegade interrupt is always right.

Frank Shepard, Soldier, insufferable Paragon Saint, righteously imported from ME1 and played through ME2 starting at level 0, faithful lover of Liara T'Soni, savior of the Rachni, reprogramer of Heretic Geth, and a guy who brought every single member of his crew (including all squad members) through the suicide mission and blew up the Collector base and enjoyed it. Has every upgrade and went on every side quest there is.

My only enemies are the Reapers. Willingness to fight the Reapers is, to me, like baptism is to Christians. It washes away all sin. Therefore, I will welcome the reformed heretics. A Batarian or a Vorcha who fights with us my ally.

There is no defeat of the Reaper invasion without their utter destruction. I blew up the Collector base without hesitation. You can't board a 37 million year old Reaper corpse without becoming corrupted. You certainly can't use a functioning base without falling under their control or seeking to be like them.

I’m mortal. I will die someday soon whether the Reapers kill me or not. Therefore, I will not fear death, which comes to every Organic.

The Reapers fear death. Every Reaper is desperate to escape it. That is why they are coming.

That is why I will win.

1. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me
2. Peace though Strength
3. Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination
4. The greatest evil is the indifference of good men
5. Life is precious; take it sparingly if possible
6. Pacifism is a nice word for cowardliness; pacifists exist by the blood of heroes and at the leisure of tyrants.
7. Sentience is tied irrevocably to choices, brainwashing (or re-programing) is the one of highest sort of evils as it takes away your free will and the results of your choices
8. Sometimes the toes you step on are connected to the boot that kicks your butt
9.It has never been "them" or "us" but all of us together

Commander Krystal Shepard: Earthborn/Sole Survivor/Infiltrator...

"Sometimes, the most difficult thing in this world; to learn how to do...Is how to 'Live in the Present'... They say that "The past is prologue." and that, "Those who forget (or don't study) history, are doomed to repeat it." Such things, have their merits, but for those who live with PTSD, 'The present is a sanctuary'... 'The past is an asylum!!'

John Shepard: Soldier, Colonist, Sole Survivor. Paragon and believes in being one, but finds it hard at times. Other times, he's renegade because some people really need a new hole in their head.

1. My crew are my family. I'd do anything for them. I'd rip out the soul of anyone who harmed them. I've lost too much family already; I will not lose any more.
2. Those who desire peace must prepare for war.
3. Large peace time military spending is a small price to pay to avoid war.
4. All sentient races are created equal.
5. Except for Batarians. I'm gonna shoot everyone of those bastards I find.
6. There are no athiests in foxholes. And I've been in lots of foxholes.
7. Socialism is a system that requires people to behave as they should in order to work. Capitalism is based on how people actually behave as opposed to how they should behave. It channels the greed impulse some people have into creating benefit for all of society while simultaneously mitigating most of its worst negative effects.
8. Forgiving others is easy. Forgiving yourself is not.
9. Those who realize they've done wrong and wish to correct it are fine in my book. Those who are doing wrong and intend to keep doing wrong will be shot.
10. Pirates will be shot.
11. Slavers will be shot.
12. Terrorists will be shot.
13. The only thing required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.
14. It is the natural, God-given right of all sentient beings to be free. Tyranny of any kind is a monstrous evil.
15. Morality is not subjective. No matter who you are, some things are just flat out evil.
16. With God as my witness, when I'm done, the only place the Reaper language will be spoken is in Hell.

Thomas Shepard: Spacer, War-Hero, Paragon. Thomas has a very deep-rooted faith in God, which has allowed him to overcome even the worst times of his life. While it seems to some that he had a "plush" upbringing (being raised in a stern but comfortable military family with an excellent reputation, and recieved commendation after commendation for his performance --including his actions during the Skyllian Blitz--) but deep down, Thomas is a tired, hurting man. He can't seem to forgive himself  for leaving his squadmate and friend Gunnery Chief Ashely Williams to die on Virmire. Not a day goes by that he doesn't think about her and all of the wonderful talks they had on the Normandy SR-1 about the faith they shared, and how he managed to rub off on her during the time they had together. His crew is his family, and he would lay down his life for any one of them, just as he did for Joker.

1)  My God is my Strength and my Refuge, my Light and my Salvation. Of whom shall I be afraid?
2) There is always a chance for redemption. Forgive and be forgiven.
3) Who am I to withhold mercy from those who hurt me? Show mercy and be shown mercy.
4)"But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep." -Robert Frost
5) Save as many lives as possible. I'll never let "Virmire" happen again. Even if it means I'm the one staying behind.
6) I will leave those I run into better than when I first met them. Jack has been..tough, but I'm finally getting through.
7) My crew is my family. I will do anything I can do help them. Even to the point of laying down my life.
8) I cannot blame myself for things out of my control, but I will make sure that the outcome is for the better.
9) Illusive Man may have had me rebuilt, but I owe Cerberus nothing. Especially the Collector Base.
10) It is not weakness to ask for help or accept it when offered.
11) I love Tali'Zorah Vas Normandy.
12) Bad teams don't exist. Only bad leaders.
13) I'll never endanger innocent lives. There is always a better way.

Combat Protocol:

1) Levy your options. Think.
2) When things are going south fast, be the first to act.
3) If they refuse to reason, do what you do best (remember that Krogan chatterbox and that mouthy Eclipse merc during Miranda's mission?).
4) Tracers work both ways.
5) Precision in combat is an art to be mastered.
