I have a few questions on these topics as they relate to one another.

I am playing a stealth character, and the better I get at stealth, the less my party talks to me.  Is there any way to play a stealth character while retaining the roleplaying value?

When does your leader's charisma come into play vs. the charisma of the person with the mouth icon on them?

Do any of the wilderness-type conversations where a character walks up and initiates with the closest character have charisma-based results?

Thanks!

How good your stealth skills are and how much your party is talking to you has nothing to do with each other. Party conversations in Baldurs Gate 2 are based on real time, and BG1 doesn't really have any major party conversations if you don't mod them in (and then they are based on real time, too).

Your charisma is important for a couple of conversations, some of these will give you better rewards (more gold, an extra item - for example with a low charisma you won't get the boots of high north), some of these will allow you to talk yourself out of battles. Usually, the important charisma score is the one of the character who is talking to the NPC. Charisma of your leader is also important when shopping (gets you lower prices).

So, yes, some of the wilderness-type conversations have charisma-based results. In BG1 this is far more important than in BG2, though.

I should have added that I am using the BG1 NPC project. My observations to date are based on that mod. I figured it might have something to do with my guy being visible, but maybe I have just had very odd luck. The characters talk to each other a fair amount still, but rarely to me unless it is critical info from someone involved in a quest.

Do the time-based conversations have a specific time or a flexible one that starts at X time and then will engage you until it works?  For example, let's say my main character is out scouting a map when the time pops for a conversation.  Presumably that conversation won't happen if the characters are far apart.  Will it begin as soon as they are in range or skip it entirely?

I'm a bit disappointed that the personal charisma matters as much as it does. How do you combat that really? I've seen people talk about making Imoen their party face, but this doesn't work so well if you're trying to keep her alive, especially in BG2 when she is mostly mage. I guess you can always pick a paladin and hope that he is front-most when you get engaged, but that seems limiting in another way.

It definitely has nothing to do with stealth, as Enuhal mentioned. I get spoken to when I'm in stealth, even when I'm in another part of the area or inside another building!

I noticed a drop-off of talk at one point, and I wondered if there were an issue, but I believe many of the "next steps" of the dialogue come with advancing in level or advancing in main-story chapters- or are triggered by particular events or encounters. This is only a guess... And note that despite how much content is inserted by mods, it isn't limitless.

Well, the charisma is really not *that* important. On the top of my hat, I can only think of 2 relevant items that you'd propably miss out, and one battle you could skip that are somewhat important. It's mostly some gold, and if you don't have a lot of item mods installed, you won't have any gold problems later on - also, why would there be a charisma stat at all if it didn't have an effect? I am glad that it does in BG1, because in BG2 it gets almost unneccesary.

But there is no trouble in using another party leader - You can as well change your formation to have the party member be in the last row and still have him be the leader. Yes, there are not a lot of good/neutral fighter-type characters with high charisma - Ajantis and Jaheira are the only ones.

For the dialogue - if you use the BG1 NPC project, as far as some conversations go (especially when it comes to romance) there are definetly story or chapter-based triggers. If you don't get any dialogue at all, you have to progress within the main quest to get some more.
