well, no matter what I set up in the config util, I end up with a 640x480, what file has the screen size, I will just edit the thing manually... I would at least like to get it in something 16:10 aspect ratio, thanks

You do have to manually save your settings while in the config utility, I believe. If you just close out it will revert.

You can also change the settings in-game. If even those aren't respected, I think you probably have a bigger problem on your hands.

I do save, it does revert, I am hoping I can edit the file and that'll make it stick, no other problems, gotta be with my win-blowz setup

Look in Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Config. BIOEngine.ini should have the settings you're looking for.

Though, if this is happening every time you start ME, it may be that something is causing it to reject your customized .ini and load the default back in every time. Do you also lose any other custom graphics or sound settings?

found it, its in the file BaseEngine.ini under the [WinDrv.WindowsClient] section, controlled by:
StartupResolutionX=640
StartupResolutionY=480

so I changed that 640 to 720 and will go from there...

Changing the 640 to 720 is not what you want to do. I assume you want 720p resolution? Then you want to change the X resolution to 1280 and the Y resolution to 720. If you want 1080p, change the X to 1920 and the Y to 1080.

I have a somewhat similar problem. In the configuration I changed the resolution to 16x10 and 1680x1050 and save the changes. When I get into the game it shows 1680x1050 at 16x9, which is strange. The images look slightly stretched and from in the game there appears to be no way to select 16x10. Somewhat odd, but it presents no problem playing, though I cannot help but feel the image quality is not quite right. My system is a desktop and can play at this resolution quite well, as I have no problems with this resolution in ME2, DA:O, DA 2 or Dead Space 2.

That is odd. I'm not sure how you could fix it, though it's possible you could work-around it by running it windowed at your native res.

Try editting the my documents/bioware/mass effect/config/bioengine.ini file.
The section you are after is;
[WinDrv.WindowsClient]
StartupResolutionX=
StartupResolutionY=

Set to your desired resolution, save, exit, and test.

Thanks, bogsnot1, that seems to work, although I have the same issue as the previous poster with the 16:9 instead of 16:10.

This a strange deal, because I've just recently purchased a new rig, and I'm having all kinds of problems I didn't have with the previous, craptastic Vistax64 system. I've pretty much given up on getting BDtS to get past the License Fail problem, and now this graphics issue, which I certainly didn't have before.

I'll be honest, I really ruined my ME experience by playing Fallout3 first; I really like the freedom of exploration and I much prefer the "Lone wolf" type of play. Oh well, I doubt I'll even try ME2 until Im sure I'll not have this much of a headache just to play the thing. Too many other great games coming out to bother.
