I loved the demo, played it more times than I care to admit. Can't wait for the full game!

I bet that 80% of people who did like the demo were console players. They are used to this kind of casual ****.

You don't have to be a console user to be into casual gaming, even Laidlaw admitted they where fishing for farmville players to increase sales the number of people who like "rpgs".

I know a couple of 360 owners who enjoyed the combat in DAO enough to challenge themselves to the higher difficulty settings and replayed it often.  They are a minority though, and don't enjoy farmville.

The demo is bad for a Bioware game. I played 3 times, watching everything: movements, artwork, enemies, dialogue.. And no is a good way. I respect to everybody who buy this game, but really, i thnk about the rpgs future.. I see it black. I am not a hater, i want the "reborn" Bioware, where they are the best. Please Bioware wake up. Its my opinion. Respect and good morning

The demo has sparked my curiousity. I think thats what it did and now I will actually get the game. However, the idea I can't dress up my companions irritiates me. Bioware DA isn't Mass Effect. Enough said.

The demo itself is not that bad so long as people remember it's a combat demo and not fully representative of the full game. Most of the comments "it's been dumbed down" etc are from people who see the speed and user interface and respond without actually thinking it all through. Tactics are there still though I imagine it's mainly useful at higher difficulties. I quite like the idea.. Want a quick mindless combat game... play easy/normal. Want a complex game... stick the difficulty up.

I know my first impression was "they ruined it" but after several demo runs I have come to realize that the mechanics are still there with just as many, if not more possibilities for tactical play.

Same here. I'm strictly a PC user and was a bit put off by the menu system and such at first, but underneath, it plays much like Origins. There are some nitpicks, but overall, I'm looking forward to picking up my copy.

The best recommendation anyone has posted is to download and play the demo through it a few times and remember that the demo is just that, a demo, and that not all features are available.

My opinion on the demo...

Combat

The combat is ok, it's not greatly changed from origins the animations are great and it's more fluid. There is no blocking or parrying unless i'm being stupid which is a real shame it's like we got half of a live combat system. Where this really suffers i suppose when compared to ME2 is that cover plays no part so things turn into a bit of a bash the attack button until your powers recharge then use them. It is an improvement overall to DA:O but it could have been so much better.

Acting and Scripting

From what i've seen this is terrible comapred to ME2 the animations and voices are a bit wooden it's all very LOTR but not in a good way. The female Hawk is marginally better than the male Hawk who sounds like one of the default hero voices from Baldurs Gate... Not good. For such an integral part of the game you would have hoped the casting team could of got this better. I suppose one of the challenges is that they are using the same voice for all three classes so you have to aim somewher in the middle.

Graphics in-game

These are good although some of the larger monster animations seem laboured and disjointed, there's a very loose concept of hit connection with the larger monsters because the animations are a little slower than the smaller enemies.

Graphics in cutscenes and conversations - Poor compared to ME2

Dialogue wheel - Is ok they seem to have replaced the neutral option with sarcasm which is a bit annoying it also doesn't gel with the high fantasy responses of the other two options.

Mechanics - Seem to have been improved but hard to judge from the demo because the inventory is blocked off.

Overall it'll be another 7/10 based on the demo as much as it addresses the annoying aspects of the first game it's really let down by the dialouge and acting from the main character and some of the support cast. With this new generation of cinematic RPG it needs to be recognised that if you do not absolutely nail the acting and dialouge it becomes harder to forgive diluted and repetetive mechanics as with ME2.

Just to clarify the reason why i'm drawing so many comparisons to ME2 is because it does seem like they've tried to emulate the series winning combination of live action and great cinematic delivery. Unfortunately this seems to have been lost in translation when porting to a fantasy setting.

The DA2 demo portrays the game pretty well, I think. It does its job in selling the game. Problem for me is all the other things that have attempted to sell the game to me have left a really sour taste in my mouth and I will not purchase this game on release. Instead, I will finish my run through DA:O, keep the save file and when DA2 goes on Steam sale, grab a copy then.

I feel a bit betrayed sure. I didn't like Mass Effect. I liked Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire. When Dragon Age: Origins hit, I thought maybe Bioware would try some old with some new. And Dragon Age 2 is mostly new, leaving me feeling like it doesn't want me.

I don't think it's ****, it just isn't my thing.

The flashback sequences were badly written and lacked narrative drive. A Mage is basically incapable of finishing the demo (due to the troll).

Wow, you suck pretty hard.  And it's an ogre.

When you say flashback, please tell me aren't talking about the transition from Lothering to Kirkwall which was all cut out seeing as it's just a demo, not the actual first hours of the game.

I finished the demo with all classes, If you don't get "Heal" thought the fight would be a lot tougher for all classes.

With its slow timer heal isn't going to make much of a difference.  You have to kite hurlocks while Aveline tanks the ogre and Carver (pathetic as he is) struggles to carry his own weight. Simple. CaptSpandex merely sucks. Which begs the question of why he is complaining.  Clearly, he is only capable of playing God of War button mashers since he failed so EPICALLY at playing a mage.  You'd think he'd be glad melee combat reminds him of GoW.

The combat is just a more fluid DAO combat system. The animations are slightly faster and all 3 classes have more distinct and fluid movements, some do border on OTT, but i like them.

The Start of DA2 and the (months old build?) demo is built as a necessary tutorial, i think thats fairly obvious. Something that Origins didnt have, and i think its been mentioned that many people stopped playing the game in the first hour or 2? Hence a linear tutorial to keep those players in the game and show them early on the combat rather than bogging them down in conversations which can wait until they are away from the blight.

For the majority of Origins players we dont need the start area/tutorial and so we judge it as linear etc, but it is needed, just not for us.

The last part of the demo skips from the Blightlands to Kirkwall and Isabella. It doesnt happen like that in the game, its just put together like that in the demo to see some new companions and later combat. Its already been shown and stated that many other things can be done before you go to isabella and the hanged man.

In the full game you can still equip Hawke with whatever armor you want, but your companions choose their own armor now but you can find upgrades for them and still change their accessories etc. Gives them a sense of uniqueness.

Dialogue wheel i find is great tbh. Its just DAO conversation options around a wheel with intent icons so you know the intent behind them.

Alot of negativity is exaggeration, ignorance and imo old school rpgers stuck in the past.

Just how many times does it have to be said before it sinks in that when it comes to the graphics of the game, the demo is from an earlier build and do not represent the final product?

I was beyond disappointed, but as you can see, opinions are divided. You'll have to play it for yourself to know where you stand.

@OP: The demo wasn't "bad", but if you're looking for the combat experience you had in DA:O, then you're in for a surprise. They chose to change from the isometric trpg-esque system to the arguably market flooded action rpg system. The demo (to me) felt more akin to God of War than DA, which was below my personal expectations of the sequal. I'll likely still try the game, but my expectations for the game have dropped exponentially since I already have 3-4 action RPG titles I'm looking to put time into this year.

I was first disappointed with the demo, because I associated the game with DA:O and found it too action oriented with a bland scenery, lack of immersion and too few interaction points.

After recalling several developer statements and watching an interview with Bioware Marketing Director David Silverman where, he explains why they want to focus on the important things (awesome ways of bisecting or shattering enemies ) and cut back on fluff like the books laying around in the mage tower ( apparently nobody but me read the things where possible, or did quests like 'Summoning Sciences' ), I consider it a fair representation of what is to expect from the game and would advise to play it through to reach your own judgment.
