Why are soldiers so popular? What is the draw?

I just feel shepard soldier is and therefore makes the group stronger where as shepard biotic or even infiltrator is weaker and makes the team members have to work harder though I the life is the same on both maybe its the style that of how one plays that makes me think that way or lack of guns and strong armor. What I'd like to know is why do people want to play as an engineer?

I, for one, have had enough of the OP's disingenuous assertions.
Ranting about how lame soldiers are compared to adepts and making veiled insults at the people who use the class won't make them any more popular.
^Spot on! Thank you for seeing it for what it is!

Desire to be popular on a forum? Preposterous.

Jayman, maybe but it works both ways soldiers have a mysterious smg, so that might be only half true.

I liked the soldier class from ME because I could wear all the armor and not have to worry if it was light or heavy. They also get all weapons so its easier but the draw back is no biotics for backup use. Also they're stronger and I feel a leader who is a soldier makes the team stronger .

I never played an engineer, but you know what, looking at their abilities

I think I might like an engineer even more than an adept. You have the ability to strip shields bare in overload and also blast through armor with incinerate.
biotics lack an ability that strips shields away other than blasting enemies with your pistol. I think I am going to replay mass effect 2 as an engineer soon. As a "caster" focused archetype, they are the total package.

First, I feel it meshes best with the story and gameplay. Shepard always strikes me as a man of action, a front-line fighter who can stand toe-to-toe with... Well, pretty much anything. I just can't see playing him as an engineer and not feeling a little bit of a disconnect with the plotline.
Second... Guns. Guns are awesome.
Third. We have the ability, through advanced training research, to pick up an extra biotic or tech power anyways. Sure, it's not as varied as if we'd gone full biotic... But it's not like you'd get any unique powers. You can always fill your powers out with those your squad possesses.
Fourth: Being a soldier makes it easier for me to bring along different team mates, instead of constantly having to select one or two specific squaddies who are strong enough to hold the line while I keep my easily-killed ass out of the line of fire. Soldiers are the damage soak class, and if I'm already a damage sponge, I have greater freedom to choose who I want with me.
Fifth: Did I mention that guns are awesome?

I don't know, I think the soldier is the least exiting class of the game.
It's probably because a lot of people just plain and simple like to shoot without all the fuss.
This is also the reason why a lot of RPG stuff is removed. Lot's of people think it's to much of a hassle.
I know for a fact some people just play the game without even listing to conversations / talking to teammates etc. They don't even know what the game is about.
EA and BIOWARE try to appeal to a large group of players this way.
I think it add's a lot to fun if you can do something extra besides pulling the trigger of a gun.
For me:
1. Adept
2. Engineer
3. Sentinel
4: Infiltrator
5. Vanguard
6. Soldier

Does anyone else play these types of games as the default class for the first playthrough? I did the same in KOTOR 1 and 2, and Dragon Age: Origins. I always play as the default class on my first playthrough to get a good feel of the game.

That and it being the default choice which is what most people will
pick up if they are renting the game or trying it out for the first time,
I know I did back when I played ME1 for the first time.
And guys, we are not all ADD kids/fratboys who only play CoD/Halo on our 360s and wouldn't know a good plot if it hit us in the face, some of us have, you know, different tastes?

In all seriousness, it blows my mind that you "Can't relate" to one of the most realistic classes in the game. So you can relate better to someone who essentially has super powers, than someone who is like an actual soldier out there fighting today? Just because someone doesn't have magical powers doesn't make them barbaric.

I use Soldier because I grew up with shooters, Quake, Doom, RTCW, Duke Nukem, Half-Life, Call of Duty back when it was good, etc.. Soldier just seems like the most logical choice, with the second one being Infiltrators, and, IMO, the Soldier is by far the most versatile class with the Sentinel as a close second.

I always play with my squad's power usage set to manual though since playing any class particularly a soldier without manually controlling my squad would remove way too much of the tactics for my taste. With squad powers set to manual playing as a Soldier actually presents somewhat of a tactical challenge since you have to rely almost entirely on your squad's powers and thus have to choose your squad wisely for each mission and choose when and where to use their powers carefully.
That said I'm amazed that 2/3 of the players rolled with soldiers. I've played every class and I've enjoyed them all, although Vanguards really aren't my cup of tea.
