Why are soldiers so popular? What is the draw?

This usually falls to soldier in ME, warrior in DA:O and so on. If I like the game enough I can always choose another class on subsequent playthroughs.

Well the sad part is they're the only class that can use assult rifles. My first run through I switched to solider class so I could get more familiar with the combat before I try any others.
Yeah, it's pretty much the fact that Soldiers have access to all the weapon types in the game, for me in particular the main reason why I tend to prefer the Soldier class is because I have access to the Assault Rifle.

I agree. I often wonder if we are being conditioned to shoot aliens.

I was about to do some impersonation of a conspiracy theorist gone wild about area51 and secret pan-earth agencies prepping for a spacewar, but chances were that the irony wouldn't display well on a forum

- The class itself absolutely destroys enemies in both ME1 and ME2.
- Shooters have the largest player base, so a lot of players will lean towards the shooting class.
- Default Shepard and all that.
Biotic classes aren't worth playing in harder difficulties, in my opinion. The whole fun of it is to watch enemies go flying with your powers, but that hardly ever happens when every enemy has multiple layers negating the effects of your biotics.

In ME2, I prefer assault rifle adept with stasis bonus power (and no shockwave). I love being a biotic, and can't imagine wanting to play it as a soldier. It just seems too Gears of War-ish to me. I love having powers.
EDIT: I love Gears of War, don't get me wrong, I just want ME to play like it's own game. I don't want to start a flamewar on accident.

Reasons:
1 - Micro-manage in a shooter do not appeals to me, have Starcraft for that.
2 - Since figured it would just be like my squadmastes having to aim skills and such... bleh.. have them for that, never got much interest into making myself one of these as well.
3 - Efficiency. Assault Rifle/Snipers + Incendiary Ammo + Adrenaline Rush.. bang bang bang, all dead. Clean. Fast.

Because I think of Shepard as a normal guy who shows an incredibly force of will and great command, and that makes him super awesome. He is a man who overcomes his limitations and any difficulties.
This.
And I love how some people here feel so superior for not playing soldier. Nice to know playing a class you don't like makes us immature, rabid shooter fanboys or idiots

There are obvious possibilities. It's the "shooter" class, and as we all know, the one thing you can count on all the little kiddies being familiar with and enjoying is taking a gun and firing.
Probably not a good idea to insult the people you're asking the question of?

It's all down to playstyle perference, one type of player isn't necessarily any better or smarter than any other.
I do kind of like the idea of Shephard as just a regular grunt done good through a very strange set of circumstances though (from an RPG perspective), something the soldier class does well in ME1 especially.

He doesn't realize that most of the people here have played ALL classes in ME 1 & 2. He just assumes that if you played as a Soldier, and happen to like that class, then you're in some way inferior to him and others who share his mentality. Calling grown adults "kiddies", and making other remarks to infer that we're video game Neanderthals for picking Soldiers and going "pew, pew, pew".
Really, it's stupid to get crap started about what other people do to have fun, and wondering why people aren't so highly "evolved" as the OP in a freakin' video game. I love Mass Effect. I have my favorite classes. I'm not about to hate on my fellow gamers because they don't play like me. If your way of playing is waving your arms like a traffic cop, and yelling "You shall not pass!", then that's cool. Play how you play. Just stop taking biotic s*its on others in the forum. People have their preferences, let them be.

I consider techs below soldiers and biotics above everyone else. Saren was a biotic (he was badass). Wrex is a biotic (he was badass). My Shepard is biotic (he beats them all).
