Because I think of Shepard as a normal guy who shows an incredibly force of will and great command, and that makes him super awesome. He is a man who overcomes his limitations and any difficulties.

The majority of the human race is unimaginative and fears things that are different. Just look at the best selling games.

First time I play a game I usually look at 'what class gives me the option of using the most equipment in the game?'.

This usually falls to soldier in ME, warrior in DA:O and so on. If I like the game enough I can always choose another class on subsequent playthroughs.

Well the sad part is they're the only class that can use assult rifles. My first run through I switched to solider class so I could get more familiar with the combat before I try any others.

Yeah, it's pretty much the fact that Soldiers have access to all the weapon types in the game, for me in particular the main reason why I tend to prefer the Soldier class is because I have access to the Assault Rifle.

I agree. I often wonder if we are being conditioned to shoot aliens.

I was about to do some impersonation of a conspiracy theorist gone wild about area51 and secret pan-earth agencies prepping for a spacewar, but chances were that the irony wouldn't display well on a forum B)

- What I will now refer to as "The Batman Effect"
- The class itself absolutely destroys enemies in both ME1 and ME2.
- Shooters have the largest player base, so a lot of players will lean towards the shooting class.
- Default Shepard and all that.

Biotic classes aren't worth playing in harder difficulties, in my opinion. The whole fun of it is to watch enemies go flying with your powers, but that hardly ever happens when every enemy has multiple layers negating the effects of your biotics.

My first ME1 char was an Adept that I loved, and my second was a Vanguard who took singularity as a bonus power, and my god was she powerful. I maxed her out on her armor and shield skills and gave her max adrenaline rush plus maxed carnage, and even on insanity the game felt like it was on easy mode with her. The only way I could tell that I was even on insanity was when I was in the Mako and it took forever-and-a-day to take down a Colossus.

In ME2, I prefer assault rifle adept with stasis bonus power (and no shockwave). I love being a biotic, and can't imagine wanting to play it as a soldier. It just seems too Gears of War-ish to me. I love having powers.

EDIT:  I love Gears of War, don't get me wrong, I just want ME to play like it's own game.  I don't want to start a flamewar on accident.

I have only played soldier in all my playthroughs at ME 1 & 2.
Reasons:

1 -  Micro-manage in a shooter do not appeals to me, have Starcraft for that.

2 - Since figured it would just be like my squadmastes having to aim skills and such... bleh.. have them for that, never got much interest into making myself one of these as well.

3 - Efficiency. Assault Rifle/Snipers + Incendiary Ammo + Adrenaline Rush.. bang bang bang, all dead. Clean. Fast.

for me soldiers offer the most challenge. Adepts and engineers abilities just make the game to easy for me I like just having a gun and nothing more. Even the hybrid characters that are half soldier seem to be more fun then the other classes. This is just me tho I had to do Insanity with a vanguard, but I'm still looking foreword to when I can tackle the new dlc with a soldier on insanity!..or more realistically hard lol

I assumed it was because Soldier was the default setting and many of the people who bought the game have never played an RPG and were totally confused by the whole class choosing thing.

Soldier is my favourite class because I like guns and it is actually more immersive(Shep cannot use his biotics or other powers in cutscenes and that annoys me,so it is more believable when I play with Soldier),but yes, most people probably play as Soldier because is default.

And I love how some people here feel so superior for not playing soldier. Nice to know playing a class you don't like makes us immature, rabid shooter fanboys or idiots .

Sometimes I like Shepard as a crafty biotic, sometimes I like Shepard as a badass normal leading his squad into the fray. Choice is a wonderful thing, let's not get silly about it.

There are obvious possibilities.  It's the "shooter" class, and as we all know, the one thing you can count on all the little kiddies being familiar with and enjoying is taking a gun and firing.

Probably not a good idea to insult the people you're asking the question of?

Personally I went for soldier because I'm absolutely awful at FPS type games and wanted whatever had the best armour until I got the hang of things, roughly the same reason I initially went warrior in DA: O. After a while I usually switch to something else.

It's all down to playstyle perference, one type of player isn't necessarily any better or smarter than any other.

I do kind of like the idea of Shephard as just a regular grunt done good through a very strange set of circumstances though (from an RPG perspective), something the soldier class does well in ME1 especially.

You know people, you don't have to justify your play style to the OP. He's not in any position to dictate to you on how to play YOUR game. Sure he may wish to be a "demi-god" and wish to crush anyone who plays different than him with a biotic slap, but maybe he's just bad at playing a class with no magical powers. Maybe he did play as a Soldier once, but kept getting owned by Husks.

He doesn't realize that most of the people here have played ALL classes in ME 1 & 2. He just assumes that if you played as a Soldier, and happen to like that class, then you're in some way inferior to him and others who share his mentality. Calling grown adults "kiddies", and making other remarks to infer that we're video game Neanderthals for picking Soldiers and going "pew, pew, pew".

Really, it's stupid to get crap started about what other people do to have fun, and wondering why people aren't so highly "evolved" as the OP in a freakin' video game. I love Mass Effect. I have my favorite classes. I'm not about to hate on my fellow gamers because they don't play like me. If your way of playing is waving your arms like a traffic cop, and yelling "You shall not pass!", then that's cool. Play how you play. Just stop taking biotic s*its on others in the forum. People have their preferences, let them be.

Soldier is the default, quick-start class. It's also the easiest and most conventional of all the classes available, so a lot of people relate to it quite easily. Not to mention Shepard tends to be portrayed as a Soldier in the media.

This is exactly why I chose Vanguard in ME and Adept in ME2. You basically HAVE superpowers. Shepartd isn't a soldier, he's a FREAKING superhero. If I wanna play as a jarhead I'll pick up Gears of War, but when the option to wield kinetic powers to lift people and bash them into walls, create black holes, make my gun shoot laser-like bullets and create a bulletproof shield around me, I'll take it and don't ask questions.

I consider techs below soldiers and biotics above everyone else. Saren was a biotic (he was badass). Wrex is a biotic (he was badass). My Shepard is biotic (he beats them all).
