Soldier just does insane damage. Really it does, Soldier is the only class that needs no gimmicks to destroy the whole game. Soldier is the true one man army, he doesn't even NEED a bonus power. Soldier runs this show. A level 8 soldier has more HP than a level 30 Vanguard. Soldier laughs at your attempts to match his DPS prowess as he goes matrix through the game with an iron fist. Even the ONE knows not to mess with a Adrenaline rushing Soldier. Yes, the soldier's win button is on a 3 second cooldown. Thats why most people use the soldier, not me.
Why are soldiers so popular? What is the draw?

Captain Kirrakhe's speech on Virmire sums up why Soldiers are freakin' awesome.
"Before Omni tools and space magic their were soldiers, our Revenant LMG and AR stopped the Collectors, but before that we spammed immunity, our Revenant LMG and AR will stop the Reapers, but before that we will hold the line".

Whats more fun?
Using Shock-wave and killing a merc, then sitting in cover else you'll get blown apart
or....
Jumping from cover, using the single shot assault rifle, popping adrenaline rush and headshotting five enemies, then thinking, dammm! I'm good.
I've played most classes, but soldier is by the far the funnest, squishy mage or ironman?

Soldiers are quite fun to be honest. I think it's just a pity that many players just play a Soldier (because it's the default class) and then don't touch the game again and miss out on a lot of awesomeness of other classes. Soldier is straight forward and while the Widow/Mattock Combo might do more damage I find it pretty boring compared to a Revenant Soldier. That's actually a lot of fun... rushing enemies and constantly being in the Action. I like Infiltrators and Vanguards more though and also like the two caster classes (Adepts and Engineers) a lot but playing a Revenant Soldier or a Shotgun Assault Sentinel and conecentrate almost solely on shooting stuff is just fun as well. It might not be as fancy due to the lack of powers but you don't really need them anyway. So the Soldier class really isn't that bad.

I used the Soldier just due to the fact It was the only import I could do XD.
Plus I didn't look at the achievements and thought the whole "kill X enemies with an Assault Rifle" Unlocks it as a bonus when you make a new character. I was wrong XD

I have finally given in to the luster that was the Soldier class. This coming from a nigh constant Vanguard player, who dabbled in Infiltration a tad. I had always perceived the class monotonous, especially when looking back to what was presented in Mass Effect. Still my curiosity of Adrenaline Rush allotted some forgiveness. Playing now on a NG+ as a Mattock Soldier, I adore the class. It is ridiculously efficient and plain vicious. Coincidently, I only use Grunt and Zaeed and alternate when required. One would presume they would hamper the Soldier yet they are arguably the strongest threesome in the game. I have yet to even have Zaeed swap to the Incisor since his damage output is impressive already. This style has led to an appreciation for Concussive Shot (Heavy), which I use frequently, albeit never from Shepard. You can waste a field with limited ammo if timed properly. Zaeed's Heavy Inferno Grenades offer a nice distraction and eat through health.
The Soldier is far removed from monotonous incarnation of its predecessor and is just a destructive dynamo.

I've tried all classes but I like soldier best (but I usually ad a biotic perk). Anyway the cutscenes just make more sense. I recall one cutscene where my biotic Shep was holding a shotgun... a shotgun that my biotic Shepard isn't allowed to carry in ME2! and in the Suicide Mission he is seen shooting an assult rifle at the collectors... yet I'm only allowed to use a pistol and smg. sooo.... I like to play as soldier to make the cutscenes make more sense not to mention the amount of different weapons a soldier can use is just plain amazing!

Soldier's are arguably the most flexible class in the game. That and I can understand that some like the aspect of roleplaying their "Shepard" as being able to kick the most amount of ass without the need of powers, aka like Batman or Captain America.

I was playing around with soldier on normal this weekend just to see how absurd it gets. I killed a gunship in one Adrenaline Rush.
It's overpowered in the extreme, it's just that simple.
It's not just OP on normal either, I just used this as an illustration of how extreme the damage output is. It's actually a good reason for me NOT to play a soldier. It's just too unbalanced.

^ that was with the Mattock, I take it?
If the Mattock fired like the Predator under AR would that be better?

Yep it was the Mattock of course
I still think the class is overpowered without that gun though.

Soldiers are the most popular because they are usually more fun to play as. They have weapons that work on everyone no matter the difficulty. If you play a biotic then most of your attacks wont hurt the enemy if you play on the harder difficulties like I do.
And this coming from someone who has a Vanguard as his Canon character.

@ atheelogos: Are you serious? Because my Vanguard is totally destroying Insanity. I'm clearing rooms much faster than with my Soldiers, even the Mattock/Widow one which is totally overpowered but the constant search for ammo slows him down compared to the Vanguard. I don't have that problem with my Claymore Vanguard, I can just rush through the game and charge into everything... Scions, Geth Primes, even the freaking Colossus and just annihilate them. No class clears (Insanity) levels faster for me than my Vanguard.

It's not quite fair to say biotics do not harm enemies on higher difficulties. Some work through defenses, some destroy defenses. There are indeed abilities that only work on enemies that are down to health, but then these abilities are absolutely devastating. Warp bombs can even harm nearby enemies.

Nooo idea. I see no appeal in soldier. I guess that it's just what people preffer. People who like to play Blood Ops surelly preffer soldier because that's what they like. People who play Pokemon and Heroes of Might and Magic III probably choose something more strategic like techie or biotic.

I find them boring. All it is Bullet time shoot and bullet time. It was my last class I played. Vanguard and Infiltrator were the most fun imo.

I play Black Ops. I prefer Vanguards and Engineers.
Oh yeah I also like old-school PC RPGs. So according to people crying on many forums, I do not actually exist

I think many posters summed the premise up quite fine. Different strokes for different folks.
Some like it for roleplaying reasons
Some like it because of the kind of games they usually play
Some like it because it's the most fun for them
I've played all classes, Vanguard is my 'canon' character, but I think all of them have their merits. I like the Soldier simply because he's heavily armed, can take more damage, and I have to admit, he is fun to play in Mass Effect 2 (this coming from someone who played Vanguard, Infiltrator, Engineer and Sentinel first).
I think hating on someone for playing a certain class is just immature and stupid, sorry. As if everyone is supposed to be mages or monks or rogues. Some people just like warriors. I like being able to give and take high amounts of damage and not have to hide or rely on potions/medigel or teammates to get the job done.
(Coming from someone who plays a whole range of characters from warriors to spellcasters to thieves to anywhere in-between).

playing soldier is basically the same as other shooter games which most people would enjoy. my favorite is still vanguard, if there is no vanguard, I doubt that I will play this game more than twice
