So I notice that there is no really good Blood mage in Dragon Age, there is Jowan who means well but messes up everything he touches and of course PC and companion mages if you so chose but that is barely touched on in dialogue. So that raises the question, is Blood Magic an inherently bad kind of magic that only a few select people can use without abusing it, abusing others with it or consorting with demons? Or can it be a genuine force for good if used by people with self control?

Blood Magic is severly looked down upon by the chantry and other mages that do not understand it.
Could it lead to a darker side? Sure but so could any mage that can cast any spell decide to use it for evil.

Its kinda like the light/dark sides of the force good/evil depends on your point of view.

I don't think blood magic is inherently evil. I think it is inherently good at certain things that are predominantly used for what most people would consider evil purposes.

If you had a good Warden use Blood Magic then there you go.

Also Jowain wasnt "Evil" he just wanted to escape with Lily.

Same thing for Loghain he just wants to defend Ferelden and not get himself killed. He wanted to use tactics but he didnt know that a Grey Warden is required to kill Archdemon.

Nothing is inherently bad. However, somethings are more commonly used by bad people than others, and some things are more easily corrupted. And somethings are incorrectly stuck with a negative connotation. What an individual believes about things like this, however, is entirely a personal decision.

Since every member of the Chantry relies on the blood magic of phylacteries to keep mages under control, seems to me like every member of the Chantry is a blood mage, at least by proxy.

Are any of them good people?

My warden was good. They still called Him an Abomination at the end of Awakening though.

I wonder if any of them are aware of just how ironic their  use of phylacteries is.

Are they?

They're not the kind of people I would want babysitting the kids or anything, but the reasons one would consider them evil are also functions of, for want of a better term, their biology. If the only food we could eat were sentient, would that make us evil?

Blood magic is not inherently bad, but this doesn't mean much. Heroine isn't inherently bad either, however that dosen't mean anything good can come from it.

Blood Magic is looked down upon because times have changed. In the days of the Tevinter Imperium, blood sacrifice and mind control don't appear to have been looked down upon in any way. At least, not by anyone who mattered. There's also the fact that it was the foundation of the Imperium and since the Imperium is the "Evil Empire" in the Chantry's teachings, everyone's brought up with stories of how twisted and perverted it is.

Blood magic is self destructive, just like most designer drugs.

Blood Magic is actually not inherently evil, but its use can easily lead to abuse. It is like inflicting physical pain is not inherently evil, but most people that enjoy inflicting pain are often not very nice people.

This is a good question. I assumed that since the only way your warden could get it was from a corrupted spirit in Origins by doing, what I consider, an evil act then it must be inherently bad. But the actual blood magic itself, and the act of mind control or whatever doesn't seem any more evil than if you use fire to kill someone or lightning or crushing prison. The victim still ends up just as dead.

Interesting. I never got called out for being a Blood-Mage. I got the satisfaction of training Wynne and Morrigan as my apprentices.

It's considered evil because mages use it to get an advantage over templars. And that makes the Chantry sad.

does blood magic make someone "evil" or are "evil" people drawn to blood magic? My opinion is that it is no different from any other school of magic. There have been "evil" mages who didnt use blood magic at all.
