UPDATED 1/05/2012--  Patch 1.05, which features fixes for DLC authorization and some (and only some) game performance issues is available here:  http://social.biowar...page/da-patches

It is suggested that you try applying this patch before attempting the other DLC authorization solutions linked below.  Patch 1.05 has been extensively tested and seems to work well for unmodified games.  As always, if you're using 3rd party mods, your mileage my vary....

* * * * * * *

A note for some of the newer folks to this forum... the people you see posting here are, without exception, gamers like you and NOT Bioware/EA employees.  So you have some options:

1) read this and other posts, and try to track down your particular problem.  (Directions on searching the forums is at the bottom of this entry).
2) post a NEW topic describing your issue, including your technical information, and some of your fellow gamers will probably help, or at least point you into the right direction.
3) Contact Electronic Arts directly by going to support.ea.com, clicking on "Contact Us", loggin in and filing a report with them.

If you're having problems, please do NOT reply to this topic.  Rather, please post a new topic in the forum that includes your system hardware and OS information.  Thanks!

This listing will be updated from time-to-time as new and interesting solutions are presented. Updates will be marked as **NEW--

Game Installation/First Run Problems
This section covers problems encountered when either installing or launching DAO for the first time.  Generally, installations appear to fail for two reasons – either there unsupported hardware or OS at play, or there is something missing from the OS (like a driver file).  Preparing your OS by updating Windows, DirectX, display and audio drivers might help mitigate this.

**NEW-- (04/26/11) - Some folks have tried to install patch 1.04 on top of Ultimate Edition, which already comes patched.  This action may cause significant problems.
http://social.biowar...8/index/7207682
Adding... to determine what version of the game you're running, on the launcher screen, select "Configure" and then select "Game" from the menu on the left. Refer to the version number next to DAOrigins.exe.  The other .EXE will have different version numbers... this is normal.

**NEW-- (05/02/11) - For those who aquired Ultimate Edition from Impulse's digital download service, here's a guide to editing registry keys to make the game launch correctly:

PhysX-- Despite the common misconception, you do indeed need PhysX to run DAO, even if you don’t have an Nvidia graphics card.  DAO will only run PhysX on the CPU.  The latest PhysX update can be found here:

DLC Installation/Authorization Issues
This section covers issues with installing and authorizing DLC. The causes of this are many and sometimes complex.  In general, DLC may become “unauthorized” if you opt to auto-login for each game session. It’s a common misconception that you must log in every time you play the game to reauthorize the DLC—this is not the case—you do not have to log in every time you play.  Logging in merely allows you to upload achievements to the social network site. So if you are constantly struggling to keep your DLC authorized, get all of it authorized once, and stay logged out.

Manually installing DLC
—You can manually install DLC if it is stuck downloading or you suspect it is corrupted (note this does NOT apply to the Ultimate Edition, which already includes all the DLC files).  Here’s a complete guide to DAO’s DLC, with links, at the Dragon AgeWiki:
http://dragonage.wik...ent_(Origins)

What DLC shows up in the game, and what DLC is accessed through the "Other Campaigns" menu?
--->In the main Origins storyline:  Stone Prisoner, Return to Ostagar, Soldier's Peak (Warden's Keep), Feastday Gifts/Pranks, Blood Dragon Armor.
--->On the "Other Campaigns" menu:  Lil's Song, Golems of Amgarrak, Witch Hunt, Darkspawn Chronicles, and the Awakening expansion pack.

Awakening-related Issues (stand-alone expansion pack)
Awakening can be an enjoyable extension of the game.  It’s also, in my opinion, buggy as hell.

If you’re encountering in-game errors with Awakening, consider consulting the Dragon Age Wiki’s summary:
http://dragonage.wik...g_Bugs/Glitches

Proper patch installation for Awakening (expansion pack, not UE):
http://social.biowar...index/2883300/2

Awakening -- Problems with the Ultimate Edition
Here’s the deal...  sadly, Awakening seems to be the number one issue with folks using the Ultimate Edition.  Specifically, under many circumstances, Awakening seems to disappear. This is usually because of a problem in installation (you’ve installed but already had another copy of Origins on the machine) or due to some issue with a file or the registry on your machine. Note: in many cases, uninstalling and reinstalling UE is the best option.

A sticky from the STEAM forums for troubleshooting when Awakening doesn't show up... applies to BOTH stand-alone and Ultimate Edition:
http://forums.steamg...d.php?t=1196144

You have installed Ultimate Edition and you DID NOT have a previous installation of Origins, and Awakening is STILL missing:
http://social.biowar...8/index/6216051

We've discovered that bad things can happen if you own a previous version of Dragon Age and install Ultimate Edition without first uninstalling the original program.  Bad things like not being able to launch Awakening or authorize DLC.  Fixes are possible:

Gameplay Bugs
Let's face facts-- a comprehensive list would be too long to post here.  Below are some issues which have popped up recently.  These solutions may help you troubleshoot other bugs.

Performance Issues (Slow Gameplay) and Crashing Issues
After DLC problems, slow gameplay or frequent crashes seem to be a common complaint.  This section highlights recent discussions, but it is by no means comprehensive.  One thing is evident, however—the lower your graphics settings, generally, the better your performance.  For other tips, see the Tao of System Maintenance section.

The Tao of System Maintenance
A lot of things, hardware and OS related, can affect Dragon Age in ways that other games seem to ignore.  This section talks about more general issues of system maintenance and includes some links to other websites which may help you tune your system.

Mod-related Issues
This section is reserved for issues which have been (reasonably) linked to having third-party mods in your game.  The bottom line-- if you’ve “modified” your game, and if you’re having problems, look at the mods as your prime suspect.

**NEW (04/19/2011) -- The "Advanced Tactics" mod may cause some movement issues in the game, including one involving the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest:
http://social.biowar...8/index/7124100

Mods may have caused characters to no longer level-up in Awakening:
http://social.biowar...index/6090794/1

Even I have played with mods from time to time.  But doing so always brings a risk, and the ONLY way to make sure a mod is not causing your particular performance issues is to do a complete uninstall/reinstall of the game.

These are just a few of the many answers available on the site.  As others have often suggested, a redirected Google search is the best way to seek them out.  Enter this into the Google search bar:

And, of course, please consult the sticky posts at the top of the forum before reporting an issue.

Happy gaming!

While I was playing the game recently, I noticed "pausing" for use of a better term. Could happen for several seconds. Then would resume ok, then "pause" again later on. Anyway, following some of the advice here I was able to alleviate it.

I disabled persistent gore - looked stupid anyway.
I disabled frame buffer effects - not sure exactly what they were anyway.
and set core affinity to use one processor on my Core2Duo.
