We're well aware of that. It's his actions, which are very real (except you replace magic with bombs) and the consequences of such actions which heats most people up. Although I'm going to have to say that some of the responses are more influenced by being able to use him in Awakening.
I think that's why they DID bring Anders back instead of introducing a new mage - because a lot of people played through Awakening with him, and have an emotional attachment. If you don't really care about the character at first and then go through the game, it seems a lot more black and white and easier to not get attached by the end. But if you already have fondness for the character, then all of a sudden it becomes a decision that's suddenly less about the whole picture and more about someone you love and what they did and why they did it. You're more likely to take into the "why he did it" than you are to only look at the "what he did." I think it adds a lot of depth (at least for those who like Anders). I kinda want to talk to someone who didn't play through Awakening once they finish the game and see what they thought/what they decided.

Oddly enough, if it WASN'T for all the things said in this thread that I read, I wouldn't have bought the official strategy guide and would have just waited for the wiki to catch up in place of it. The little bit of spoilers I've shared with some friends are actually what made them cave and order DA II today rather than waiting for a ton of reviews to judge it. So yay for the thread.
But, completely on topic, I'll probably never be able to knife Anders either. I'll probably tell him to run. I still don't get why people go "But these characters aren't real!"... so? I sob at episodes of shows that hit me hard, and I KNOW the Doctor doesn't really exist. That doesn't mean I'm not emotionally attached to the character. Anders was my favorite character in Awakening... the concept that he'll do something exceedingly foolish and be the cause of hundreds dying to come? Breaks my heart. I kinda assumed when we heard Vengeance had taken over, we'd be able to talk him down from it... not get duped by him or actually cheer him on for it. Like I said... Anders is going to fall from being my favorite. I'll pity him, but honestly, he sounds like he went a little nuts too. Which well, he did, but saying his name is going to be echoed through ages and the like? Yeeeeeeeah. He was trying to be a martyr in his hatred.
What he did was effective. But there's always ways to bring about change that don't involve that sort of violence. Sometimes, it IS the only option... but does he really give us a chance to find a different way first? Sure, no one did anything for a long time about the situation. But that doesn't mean a compromise couldn't be found. My original warden is currently Alistair's Queen. She knew Anders and fought beside him and trusts in him... if she doesn't disappear till later, why didn't he feel he could approach her about the issue? Also, my Warden would have kicked the butt of whoever made Anders get rid of his cat. She gave him that cat. >

Just saw Alistair~ He appeared in place of Shroud at the end of Act 2 with the Grey Wardens since Anora was queen. He looks and sounds the same though, and was covered with a lot of blood.
Oh-hello! Now I know what to do with my only Dalish Origin saves!

Wow lol, everyone sure is getting heated up about what Anders did - and he's not even real!
I can say though, I'll be siding with him probably on my play through. Makes for interesting story.

Yeah, but in the end its still a game. If people want to be worked up about something that could be real, how about the real life revolutions that are happening in egypt or iraq?
Course to each his own I suppose.
This is a video game forum, and you're surprised we take video games far, far too seriously?

Yep. Not sure what the outcome is since it wasn't chosen.

Nothing I can take pic with and I can't go back to that point, sadly. Too bad, since Alistair made the whole "Grey Wardens are busy and can't help" thing less cold.

I think 68. was a joke made by Anders
as for 40. For what I know it was suggested by Anders, and it was revealed it was a lie later.

Trial and error, I suppose. I've got nearly 20 playthroughs (three profiles) to choose from.
