Someone reading the guide said it was not a companion quest, but a main quest. So it'd have to be unavoidable. It's all triggered by the death of an innocent mage, I think. I don't know if Anders states this or if we watch it happen. Klace would know... but alas.
Alas, indeed. I thought there was the tiniest sliver of hope that some version of Anders wouldn't do it. Hopefull he doesn't try to trick you into helping if you have him at max rivalry.
I have a feeling that he always will trick you... and not going to lie, it's going to hurt like hell. I really want to explore the dialogue options at that point. I could forgive him for the lie if he apologized and explained himself... which he kind of does, albeit in the middle of his important speech making.

A reminder for the late shift, spoilers stay in this thread which is tolerated only because it is clearly marked. No drift to other threads. And hey, as a personal preference, how about no giggly little "OMG, I just heard something, go to spoilerz!" posts. Seriously, don't be that guy.
Summary
About the Origin Companions/NPCs:
1. Zevran appeared in one of the Sundermount quest (given by the guestgiver). His screenie New screenie
2. Zevran will flirt with you and tried to sleep with you (you can if you want to XD), then your LI will step in.
3.. The Warden will be mentioned by Zevran.
4. Nathaniel appeared in one of the Deep Road quest.5. Leliana appeared in one of the Basti quest.Possible Leliana
5. Leliana appreared at the end of the game, took the book from Cassandra's hand and commenting on how the Warden and Hawk both disappeared wasn't a coincident.
6. Cullen appeared in one of the guest, along with some guy named Wilmod LInk
7. Cullen is now the Knight Captain of Kirkwall, directly below Meredith.
8. Sandle was in game.
9. Zathrian was mentioned in game.
10. There's a man being confronted by a group of dalish, and he said he used to be a werewolf, but the hero of Ferelden helped him turn back. And he said he was sorry for killing the elves when he was a werwolf, but the dalish still want to kill him. You can step in and help him, and the elves get angry and attack.
11. If you made Bhelen king in DA:O Harrowmont's relative is in Kirkwall.
12. one stage you will receive the letter from King Alistair (Act 3), which triggered the cameo (assumed you let Alistair as king in Origin) of Ali and Teagan.
13. Alaistar appeared in place of Stroud at the end of Act 2 with the Grey Wardens since Anora was queen.
14. Cullen was also suspecious of Meredith.
15. Morrigan is mentioned by Flemeth but no cameo.
16. It was the Grey Warden made Anders get rid of Ser Pounce-A-Lot, at least that's what he saide (persumed he was joking).
17. The entire clan in Dalish Origin will involved in one of Merrill's quest.
18. According to the quides. Cameos from the Origins series (highlighted are the one we came across):
Alistair
Leliana
Zevran
Nathaniel
Bodhan and Sandal
Cullen
Justice?
Sketch
Bonny Lem
Sophia Dryden
19. Cullen, Zevran, Nathanial, will joined you in the final battle against Meredith.
20. The talking darkspawn Disciple appeared in the DR.
21. A bartender in Kirkwall mentioned pigeon population in Ferelden was decreasing.About DA II Companions/Plotlines:
Fenris:
1. Fenris's preslave name is Leto.
2. Fenris had a sister, who was sided with Danarius, his former magister master.
3. Fenris apprear to hate mage and thinks everyone should be made tranquil. (Possible only rivarly romance route for the mage Hawk).
4. Fenris is also strongly suggested he is bi.
5. Fenris live in what possibly his former master's mansion (next door to Hawk's), Merill in Alienage, Anders in his clinic, Isabela and Varric, not certain about Aveline or Basti.
6. If you side with the mages, Fenris will leave unless you have 100% friendship/rivalry. It looks like you get a second chance to rerecruit him if "you have a solid friendship".
7. FemHawke doesn't want Fenris to leave, so she reaches out to grab his shoulder. He glows blue and gets mad, pinning her against the wall before they kiss and make out. HOT (OMFG!!!!!!!!).
8. Fenris will leave for a while but return later (if romanced).
9. If Fenris is with you when you confront The Arishok at the end of act 2, he will use his knowledge of The Qun to invoke a 1 on 1 duel between Hawke and The Arishok.
10. Leave Kirkwall in Act 2 with Fenris in your party to activate his story arc. Slaver/Sister. In this quest you can recruit an elf girl to be a servant at your home.
11. Fenris seems to be an optional companion(TGP had confirmed the possiblity).
Merrill:
1. Merrill appears to be bi.
2. The ritual mentionted in Merrill's backstory involves her chanting in Dalish and Flemeth pops out of the amulet (Lord Vordy in HP!!!!!!!!!!!!!). IT seems she put a little piece of her soul in it because she figured that Morrigan would come back with the Warden to kill her. She gives some cryptic advice and says that she's thankful, but she pities Hawke because of the road ahead. She then turns into a dragon and flies off.
3. There is minore flirting line on Carver to Merrill!!!OMG!!!!
4. Merrill: "Why do they called it Brothel? Does that have something do to with broth?"
5. During the Fade quest, a demon would offer Merrill a scion of the Dalish. Delined to let Merrill to do it will result in rivalry level inclease.
6. Merill has an Eluvian in her bedroom and her quests are trying to get it back in working order.
7. Merrill was being used by the demon to complete the mirror so they can channel to the real world (Doctor Who!!!!!!!!!)
8. Merrill's Keeper was the demon (no wonder she looks different) and her clan will turn against you once you kill her.
9. Merrill will stayed with you in the final battle (if the rilvary/frienshi meter was max)
Issie:
1. The "relic" was a holy Qunari book written by the founder of the Qun religion.
2. The Arishok will not be allowed to leave Kirkwall until he finds that book.
3. Issie knew a along what the relic was.
4. if we choose the rivarly path in full Isabela may agree on handing the relic to the Qunari.
5. Isabella seems to be an optional companion (TGP had confirmed the possiblity).
6. Isabella WILL come back with the book, possibly, if you say you'll give it to her instead of telling her to fork it over to the Qunari. Or at least have a high enough gauge when you tell her that.
7. There's an option to give Isabella over to the Qunari.
Anders:
1. Anders appear to hate Templar (very important if you want to ship him).
2. One of the quest to separate Anders and Justice (or at least it seemed to be at the time).
3. Anders didn't want help separating Justice from him. He was concocting something to destroy The Chantry. He blew up the ENTIRE freaking Chantry in Kirkwall with some massive spell. Then Meredith ordered The Right of Annulment to execute every Mage in Kirkwall.
4. Anders stole the Warden maps from another Grey Warden planning an expedition to The Deep Roads. He reveals this after Carver is inflicted with The Blight. Anders doesn't turn him into a Grey Warden, you do a quest to find the Wardens in the Deep Roads named Stroud. Who takes Carver away and says you may never see him again. That same Grey Warden shows up during the end of Act 2 saying there are urgent Grey Warden issues and they are too important to even help Kirkwall stop the Qunari war.
5. Anders will turned into Justice in the Fade. So do not take Merrill or him in the Fade quest.
6. It is very strongly suggested Anders could be bi (from his flirt with H!Hawk and the traguil mage KArl he was trying to rescue).
7. There are a few ways to keep Anders without killing him, though you will lose Sebastian in the process.
Basti:
1. Basti is an LI for female only.
2. There is a rumour around you can married Basti.
Siblings/Family:
1. Carver and Bethany's codex entries
2. Bethany has three endings: Join the Circle, Died in the Deep Road, or Join the GW (?)
3. Carver has three endings: Join the Templar, Died in the DR, or Join the GW.
4. When going to the Deep Road, if you take Bethany/Carver with you, Bethany/Carver will contract the taint and you will have the choice to slay them or leave them in the DR. This is possibly when your Awakening import save file click in. Nathaniel will save Bethany/Carver by making them a Grey Warden.
5. If you leave them in their estate, Bethany will be dragged away and join the Circle and Carver will join the Templar willingly.
6. There is another way to save your siblings: Take Anders to the Deep Road with you. He's a Grey Warden.
7. To ensure your siblings returned in the future, do whatever quests that's related to them after the joining.
8. If you romance Fenris your uncle will comment on it.
9. Some dialogue by Hawk's mother hinted she was not aware of whatever Hawk's relationship was in.
10. Mama Hawk could be died, too.
11.61. There's an Orlesian woman who goes missing from her husband and the family suspects the husband. Do this quest, you learn more women have gone missing, KEEP DOING THIS QUEST.Proven not working.
12. So far it seemed inavoidable for Leandra's death.
Aveline:
1. Aveline/Quanary Quest Link
2. Aveline will remarried and honeymooned in Orlais.
Misc:
1. There is a cap on levels, though I got very confused about the numbers.
2. There is something about Meredith's eyes.
3. Meredith is one of the final boss.
4. Hawk was in Kirkwall when the news of the Blight was finished by the Warden reached him/her.
5. A quick look at the erf files hints that these are some of the gifts for the companions. Take this as extreme speculation:
Anders: Key + an amulet
Aveline: Shield
Fenris: Book + a sword
Isabela: Ship?! + a talisman
Merrill: Halla?! + a ring
Sebastian: Bow
6. How to access the file from the demo: Program Files>Dragon Age 2 Demo>modules>campaign_base>data>designerplots in wordpad/notepad and search "gift".
7. There is a new blood mage speciality (?)
8. There is a brothel in Kirkwall (right, very important to some of us!).
9. There is a blood mage sanctuary and it doesn't seem to be Anders clinic.
10. DA II Gaming guide
(possiblly partial)
11. There are several Qunari related quest in Kirkwall (to my delight).
12. There will be LI confrontation.
13. There are 13 different endinds.
14. You can have up to 8 active companions when fighting the last boss. Including NPCs if you do their quests.
15. As the last boss loses health, you can be joined by your sibs, Varric, Anders, Aveline, Fenris, Isabela and Sebastian. They supposedly show up in that order, baring you already having them in your party, being dead or having left you. The NPCs are, in order, Donnic (Have to have Aveline in your main party, cause he was her second husband), Zevran and Nathaniel.
16. There’s an achievement for exorcising a party member.
17. A quest comes up with a dwarf offering to give you all the money you need to go to the Deep Roads as long as you pay him back more. It's an easy way to fund your expedition. But apparently he wants more and more money and he has ambushed me at the start of act 2 demanding it.
18.Secret Achievements/Trophys for DA II
Stone Cold- Defeated the rock wraith on your expedition into the Deep Roads.
King of the Hill- Defeated the Arishok.
Conqueror- Defeated Meredith, knight-commander of Kirkwall's templars.
Arcane Defender- Sided with the mages five times.
Mage Hunter- Sided with the templars five times.

I wonder how it will play out if he's your LI. I am still desperately hoping for a happy-ish ending, but I don't know how Hawke is going to forgive Anders for that. Even if she spares him (and of course she will), that may be impossibly hard for the relationship to overcome...
::Anders walks into a Hallmark store::
Anders: Do you sell any cards that say "Sorry I tricked you into helping me commit an act of terrorism that triggered civil war and genocide"?
Clerk: 0_0 Um... no. No we don't.
Anders: Damn.
Puppy eyes and a dozen roses probably aren't going to get him out of this.

I'm glad at least in the video it's apparent that Anders isn't happy about any of this. That's a sadface if I ever saw one. I think he summed it up best himself, "There's nothing you can ask me that I haven't already asked myself."
Geez, there's gotta be SOMETHING in there that allows for a semi-happy ending. Unless of course you're all for destroying the chantry anyway, then it's a given.

So you caught the saddness, too? When he momentarily let Justice come forth, then almost seemed to blink him away... I caught a lot of emotion in that moment.
Happiness will be in the eye of the beholder, really. Given the circumstances going on in the world though... there's just no way. To me, I'm glad that a change has been forced upon the world, because it was just a miserable mess before. But change is hard... so very, very hard.
@dreamextractor: Oddly enough, that's been labeled as Varric's theme, not Anders'. But it is appropriate, I think.

Mmmhmm. My favorite quote of hers, and is my current signature. It was... so very profound.
