Well, one excuse to use as a handwave is that if you romanced one of the characters -who cameo-, the character in question (Zevran or Leliana to use an example) says that they had business to attend to in Orzammar or are currently looking for Morrigan (since IIRC 'Witch Hunt' takes place a year after Origins).
Witch Hunt's place in the timeline is squiggly; the promos for it on the official website said something like "almost a year" after Origins (in other words, Morrigan probably would have had the baby already), but during the actual game, if you examine the map, the hover-over description of one of the locations (Amaranthine? Denerim? I forget) pretty much puts Witch Hunt as 2 years after either Awakening or Origins. Either way, that's a bit of a gap.
I was chatting with a friend last night while he was working with the console in the demo, trying to re-find that Zevran thing. He found it during Act 3. I'm not sure if it was possible to find it any earlier, but if it's
only in Act 3, that's quite a ways after the Blight and Awakenings.
- If the Warden has died in Origins and Zevran returned to the Crows, he's possibly doing elite, heartless Crow things...
- If the epilogue(s) implied Zevran eventually left the Warden, who knows what he's up to...
- If the epilogue(s) implied Zevran stayed with the Warden (IIRC the clearest epilogue to do this is the "stay and train the Wardens" one), one would wonder why he was at Sundermount, and hope he hasn't ditched the Warden...
- If taking the Awakenings epilogue, it's so foggy that it's hard to make any assumptions on Zevran's status with the Warden at that point. "Adventuring together still"? Ruling the Crows? Who knows XD
Of course, DG said somewhere or other that one takes the epilogues as "more than rumor" at their own risk...
