What trilogies of movies, films or games in your opinion ended well and met your expectations fully? I have very high hopes for Mass Effect 3. I honestly don't want all the questions answered and I don't want the story to end in Mass Effect.

What do you guys think makes a great trilogy, If you could list your favorite trilogy and explain why you think it ended well.

Peter F. Hamiltons Night's Dawn trilogy is the best literary experience I have ever had, although I have some nitpicks about the ending. Most significant among those nitpicks is the speed of the ending, which I felt was a little rushed. I mean, the main character spends the entire third novel searching for specific, let's call it "artifact", and doesn't actually find it until there are less than 50 pages left in the book (I think - it's been a while since I last read the trilogy), and when the book is about 1200-1300 pages long, that's a somewhat rushed ending.
But as a whole the Night's Dawn trilogy is incredible, and has a pretty good ending that I definitely didn't see coming.

Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring adaptation.

It was just good, better then the previous two movies - and that's saying alot.

I didnt really like the ending. It was too much of a cop-out, a deus ex machina... literally, lol. I thought there would be a big plan to fix what happened like what the Kiint did.

While I didn't feel that it was a cop-out, it was a very sudden ending, and I would have preferred something longer and more elaborate.
I also didn't understand why Joshua got back with what's-her-face. (Seriously, I cant remember her name). The pregnant girl.

Lol i forgot her name too. I remember she said that they shouldnt stay together because he is a captain and it would ruin his life basically. The fact that he settled down at the end anyway kinda defeated the point though.

Monkey Island Trilogy. somewhat spoiled by the abysmally bad fourth game though (haven't played the fifth yet)
Bourne Trilogy (books) the movies are ok, but the books are much better

the problem with identifying a good trilogy though is that so often they stop being a trilogy because somebody wants to cash in on continuing the franchise. results often vary

Star Wars. ORIGINAL Star Wars.

Lord of the Rings

Baldur's Gate (I'm counting Throne of Bhaal as the third game, as it was originally intended.)

The Godfather

The Prince of Nothing

I agree, Toy Story.
Although Lord of The Rings is epic and well done and inspiring and all that, it's mostly made up of battle scenes. I prefer movies/books that focus less on people flinging themselves at each other and getting impaled and more on actual plot.

The first three Harry Potter books (and movies) were good too. Then after that they kind of went down the toilet.

Ooooh my, so many good mentions above. Indiana Jones TRILOGY was good... TRILOGY. I loved those movies and they ended well with Indie, dad, Salah etc leaving and finally realising Indiana's origin (of his name, which was after his dog that he loved a lot).

Original SW Trilogy, Toy Story, Lotr, Back to teh Future, The Bourne Trilogy! And who can also forget Christopher Nolan's Batman movies... yeah it's not a 'trilogy' yet but I'm betting the next Bat's movie will be just as damn good as Begins/Dark Knight. Anyone else think of any other good trilogies?

Pretty simple:

When the makers of whatever piece of media intended to make a trilogy from the very beginning it usually ended quite well (The Original Star Wars Trilogy for example) because they planned out everything accordingly.
When they just planned a movie as a standalone but then made it a trilogy because of unexpected success the result often sucked (Matrix, Pirates of the Carribean) because the they didn't plan to make another part and are now forced to do something with the lore they created in the first part allthough it was never meant to set up a trilogy.

Mass Effect is a little complicated in this regard since it was planned as trilogy but then Bioware got bought by EA while making the 2nd part which certainly had some kind of impact. Things should have been planned out a long time ago, so unless EA started to turn things upside down for whatever stupid reasons (which I wouldn't put past them) ME3 should be fine.

I anticipate that in ME3 you will finnaly visit the homeworlds of all council races while they are under reaper attack. Depending on how early you save which species they may come out of the attack nearly unharmed and help you later in the game or, if you take too much time, they get completely destroyed. In the end there is a final battle (for the citadel?) and depending on your choices and how many allies you saved you may or may not win this final battle.

Sounds pretty hard to screw up to me.

That's deus ex machina in the most literal sense you can imagine. Given that, the rushed part seems appropriate. In fact, the Void trilogy wasn't dissimilar in its ending.

No love for Xenosaga? I loved this storyline. Hated the gameplay of X1 and X2 though. :\\
