I've got a Windows Vista machine and had a difficult time getting the installer to run. I downloaded it initially and ran it - my machine just clocked and eventually locked up. I deleted the file, redownloaded, restarted, redownloaded Direct X from the web, and tried again. Still had the same result. Below are the steps I used to fix the problem.
- I used Microsoft's Web Installer to install DirectX (located here)
- I rebooted.
- I redownloaded (third time now... ugh!) the DAO2 Demo Installer
- I disabled User Account Control: this seemed to be what was holding everything back from working.
- I rebooted
- I ran the installer - it worked!
- Click the Start button
- Go to Control Panel
- Open User Accounts
- Select the link for Turn User Account Control on or off
- Remove the checkmark regarding use of User Account Control.
