Sword and Shield is NOT a Pre-requisite of Tanking in DA2

Personally, I didn't finish a mage playthrough in Origins so that's my choice for DA2.

"Tanking is essential, and Aveline is by far the best tank in the game," says nice Mike Laidlaw in a cheerful voice.

An option may be, as a 2h tank, roll with Fenris or Carver and set up some tactics so that whoever's health is highest during the fight gets aggro.
For instance for Fenris
Self - If Hawke's health < 25% - Activate ability - Taunt.
Vice versa for your Hawke. Hawke could start out the fight as tank but potentially trade at some point.
This would probably work well if everybody is focusing down one mob at a time so your party isnt generating extra threat.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank BioWare from freeing the tank role from the sword'n boarders.
probably because that's what a defensive build would do? more defense, crowd control, and damage reductionLet's take a look at the Warrior trees, shall we?
Firstly, the most obvious - Weapon and Shield. Yeah, there are a few defensive talents in here, at the cost of damage. But the majority of the talents are focussed on crowd control, tossing lots of enemies around, and positioning them.
you sure? Have you tried playing a two hander in the demo? no matter how many skills you use, you cannot peal that orge off Aveline.Secondly, Two-handed. Note that not a SINGLE talent in this tree increases damage. It merely provides the best AoE skills for the class, which is just as effective at keeping aggro as it is at doing damage.
yes, the warrior trees not the weapon ones just like the first game lolThirdly and fourthly, Defender and Warmonger. Here are your actual tanking talents.
Threaten increased aggro not in the shield tree is it?do you see any taunting skills on the shield tree?

LOL having a shield tank and using the weaker, more vulnerable character be the main tank? FAILMy personal plan? DPS/buffing focussed shield and weapon Hawke with Fenris as the true tank.

I'm hoping, but given Laidlaw's breezy "tank = Aveline" remark, I'm not hoping very hard.
(I like Aveline a lot, by the way. I just don't want to have to keep her all the time.)

Why bother giving me any other companions at all?

The Sword and Board Warrior still is the better tank by quite the margin. The Damage mitigation and CC outweight any extra damage a 2H Warrior does for a Tank role. But the 2H is a better Tank than in Origins, that much is true.
Neither of us can make the argument that the margin is that wide. DA2 has shown itself to be a game that pumps out as many enemies at once. A dead enemy is one that isn't doing damage. While I'll concede that, for a single-boss encounter, a shield and weapon tank will outweigh a two-hander, those types of fights are shaping up to be the exception to the rule. It's all about battlefield management rather than statistical min-maxing.
It's both factual and common sense that those with a shield will have better survivability than those without.

however the sword and board tactic is far better defence wise
