I am amazed people are willing to be used by a company like this. Sure, free stuff is nice but making and implementing one of these "tomes" takes one person maybe 10 minutes using the toolset. It is truly brilliant marketing though..

Kind of you to allow them a toilet and cigarette break in that estimate.

Ah yes,

"Facebook"

We have dismissed those claims.

At least they aren't Bethesda for Elder Scrolls V though, they want people to name a child the word for "Dragonborn" that that game's developed language uses...AND it has to be born on the release date. If it is I guess they get something really special...

So Bethesda is wanting folks to go forth, procreate, AND name their child after their product all in the name of getting an in-game item?!  *shakes head with a self facepalm* Balls!!

Actually if I remember correctly the winner recieves a code that gives them every Bethesda Game ever made and ever to be made for download (free of course)

Even if I were interested in it, I hate kids for starters and secondly, it looks like it's a PC users only kind of thing to me lol.

the fb thingy reminds me kind of one of these type of promotions from Bioware quite a while ago, where you posted a link on other forums etc.

It's a win-win situation. Takes you one click. Maybe two. You'll eventually get the tome, plus BioWare gets promotion which can't be bad for the fans, huh? More mony for them, more nice games for us. I don't see the problem.

Well, they can use the spare time to do the artwork :P

Why would it be good for Bioware for the only knowledge of its games for most of my friends to be me constantly waving it in their faces? The demo made sense, you could spread it around people who might be interested, they could try the game. This time they get one update a day of fairly trivial information about something they don't care about - and I don't really want to pester them like that, don't think Bioware helps its image either

I think the BEST marketing for the game is simply to make it GREAT.

Agreed! All these freebies are throwing up red flags for me. I'm starting to think that the game really isn't that great.

Of course, I got Origins 7 months ago. So, I have no idea if BioWare did the same thing for Origins.

I understand that people don't like facebook, but it makes sense to use it as an attempt to "go viral." It is much more valuable from an advertising point of view to have a friend recommend something than a random ad placed on a website.

This allows bioware to infiltrate friend groups and spread even more word of mouth. A little nefarious, yes, but then again I think that all of my friends should try out bioware games anyway!

If I'm going to recommend a game to someone regardless of a promotion, I may as well get some free stuff out of it.

And if they make a ton of money, they have more money to invest in further endeavors. More power to 'em.

That kind of naive, unrealistic thinking is the reason the good Sierra games died. Some of the best games of all time, Thief for one of many examples, simply didn't sell well enough to keep their makers alive as companies.

Making a great game, or a great book, or a great whatever does not guarantee success. This would be why Dan Brown is recognized and gets movies made of his books rather than deserving authors who know their stuff, and why bands like Starflyer 59 are still basically unknown while for some reason everyone is aware of Britney Spears.

Wow. We did it.

Just in the nick of time, too? Who could have guessed. Oh, and in time for you to ask us to do your marketing for you!

The simple fact is, we are more powerful than they are. What is more likely to make you buy a game? "Oh, yeah, I watched some commercial on tv and it looked cool" when you know trailers often lie, or "My friend played the demo and said it was awesome"? For me, it's the latter every time.

That's what this is supposed to prompt--word of mouth. DA2 goes onto your wall, your friends see it, and the game sells better than it would otherwise. Quite possibly much, much better.

Hell, if I didn't know about DA2 and somebody I knew made me aware of it, I would THANK their ass. :)

I said it's the best way, not the only one and right. ;) I really understand that marketing should familiarize you with a product, don't worry.

This might have already been said, but I don't feel like reading through all 20 pages.  My best guess to why we jumped from 850,000 to 1,100,000 could be that Bioware kept the downloads from North American and Europe seperate untill the time was up, then added them together, because if I remember reading correctly about the demo download, Europe got their's much later.

Whatever the reason, good jobs guys.

Everyone complaining about doing this facebook thing because its shady marketing are probably the same people that walk around with Hollister and A&F across their chest, legs, and ass.

Now I am not doing it because I don't use Facebook.

You're both paying attention to what Facebook does, then.  Anyone who is concerned about their privacy and the security of information about themselves avoids Facebook like a bad rash.  A very, very bad rash.
