You mean you hope they will falsify a win?

I won't complain if they do it, but I think people would notice that, whereas at least the demo one was only moderately obvious.

Yeah, I hate to be so cynical all the time, but I saw the download count yesterday or the day before on another site I hang out on and it was a few hundred thousand short of a million. Everyone was half-joking, half-serious that it would magically go up to over a million by the end. People were also saying it had relatively low downloads for a free demo, but then there was the counterpoint made (that people agreed with) that (a) it only counts if the person is logged into an EA account and (B) on Xbox it was only available to Gold XBL subscribers.

Why the hate for facebook?

I can only speak for myself - their privacy policy and their misuse of member IP is disgusting.  You want to give personal information away to a greedy corporation who'll do Christ-knows-what with it, go ahead.

^^ Exactly this! Same goes for Payback and similar stuff.

Yeah....*Turns to the DA Marketing team* Guys! This doesn't seem to be working, pull out the free swag/More DLC and we'll see if we can get some of them to use that!

anyone consider the fact that the Dragon Age Demo is also available on Steam? Steam, which last time I checked, is the #1 source of video games and is dominating the PC game sales market. Perhaps the counter on the Bioware page only counted those downloaded straight from said page.

Possible.
But again I believe to be counted you need to log into your EA account.

Moderately?, 28th Feb counts approx 10 to 20 every 15 seconds, 28th feb clock reads approx 800,000,  1st of march and the clock miracously hits 1,000,000, they'll be turning water tears into wine next.

The counter was not getting real time updates from all available download sources. It is entirely possible that the 800k was solely the number of PC downloads from the Bioware site. The sudden jump was them adding in numbers from some other source(either PS3, 360, other PC download locations, or some combination of those).

Also it did not only count the people who signed in. The sign in thing was simply a requirement for the items to stick to your account.

For all we know, the counter could of been broken or not worked  for a system.  They were clearing off 300k - 400k downloads it seemed like every other night.  So if it was broken, they could of just decided to let the hype build up and give us the items anyways at the last moment.

I understand they are going for some kind of exponential thing, but um, it's just not going to work if they barely scratch 1000 likes on a post? Meh, I just don't see how impressions/shares work I guess? I don't use the share button at all.

They could have also put back the roughly 300,000 they took off the first time.

They also said that they had to manually update the clock from other sites and the consoles, and the 28th was the day after a weekend.  A weekend in which none of these manual updates happened because that person was not in the office.  In fact, the time on the 28th when the clock was updated was just about right for someone coming in on Mountain Time and manually updating the count from weekend data.

I am not saying that this is definitely what happened.  They really should have avoided a clock at all if it was not reading from the EA account server (because then you would have never needed manual updates).  But the story is plausible because of the weekend factor.

Everytime a post is loaded through facebook it counts as an impression. Liking or sharing something increases the number of impressions that a post recieves by sending it to your friends' feeds through your feed. Since impressions are counted by Facebook and the raw data is not provided to the group owner, a single person can give multiple impressions to a single post. When spammers are factored in, this promotion is pretty much a freebie.

QFT.

No magic at all, just that they had the weekend off and the counter only ACTIVELY counted clicks on the download link (or possibly downloads from that page, but given the ease at which it was spammed it was likely only iterated during "on-click" events).  When someone was in the office they would check the "activations" tally and adjust the counter.  Until the next adjustment it would still only count the clicks on that particular page.

Nope, there's no public data on the share/impressions numbers at all. If Bioware wants, they could get 5 million impression and half a million shares every day, then turn around and say "Sorry folks, didn't make it! But if you try again for another week, the book may still be yours!"

So no, I won't be participating in this.

You also know that they had complete control over the demo download counter? The could have made it say SAUSAGES if they wanted to, so any kind of metre we can see is irrelevant. And they're not going to avoid giving it out, that would be horrible PR. The whole reason that people are accusing Bioware of bumping up the supposed number of demo downloads at the end is because it would be embarassing for them if they didn't make it to one million and then had to say "No free DLC" to several hundred thousand people.

This is a lot of sturm und drang over something kinda silly. Why does anyone care whether they really made the target number or just missed it or whatever? What's the big deal?

I'm far more interested in all the ways in which the demo made me worry about the game, and all the ways in which the demo made me look forward to the game.

Agree. I do not think in all this conspiracy theory about the numbers. And honestly, the additional book will probably have no weight in the overall gameplay (just like the DLC item for DAO were basically irrelevant).
I am merely curious about how the facebook PR campaign is going on.
