I think the Ring of Whispers dlc is worse, as you have to spend over 15 bucks on the EpicWeapons site to unlock it. At least the Facebook items are free.
You can get the Ring of Whispers by purchasing Razor products too;)

With regard to peeps saying this is "low of Bioware", "why should I advertise for them", "pathetic marketing" - personally I think you are all wrong (even though they are your opinions, of which you are entitled) I think its genius marketing. Getting your customers to advertise for you with a promise of reward...genius. I have worked in marketing and they have a product to sell, targets to hit etc. A successful business is a known and recognised business, so why not advertise through THE biggest website/ social network in the world today? Funny thing about marketing, whether you like an idea/ advert or hate it, everyone still talks about it and spreads the word. Sorry for the ramble...
Firstly, personally my issue is not with "pathetic" marketing. It's clearly not pathetic, it appears to be working.
However, it is certainly not "genius" marketing either. Indeed, I'd argue that to not use social media would be, frankly, stupid. Using it, does not make the marketing dept. at Bioware geniuses.
As for everyone "talking about it". Well, not really. Simple fact of the matter is, that my friends on Facebook who didn't know about DA2 before this promo won't know about it afterwards. Why? Because I didn't tell them. It does actually require (minimal) effort to engage in this promotion, if a user won't engage, then, no, the maxim of "just talking about it" doesn't apply.
Sure, this will result in more people knowing about the game, as a result, more copies will sell.
But, you're also effectively spamming the facebook accounts of, realistically, millions of people. Facebook junkmail if you like. Personally, I find unwanted info, invites, gifts, invitations to play Farmville, etc., that you get all the time on Facebook, to be one of the least appealing aspects of the site. This promo falls into that category imho.
Sure, like I said, you'll sell more copies. However, the strategy is the modern day spam email.
Cuts both ways.
That it's linked to DLC is irrelevent in my mind.
And this is from a long time Bioware fan. I want the company to do well, for DA2 to be a great game and wish them all the best in the future. I just don't believe this is the way to do it.
My point behind this post is that there are a variety of reasons why people don't like this, I believe it's not really to do with "lazy" marketing. It very well might be because of "low" marketing.

I can second this pretty much down the line, I've played nearly every game BioWare has released but the simple fact of the matter is that I've talked about and recomended DA:O more before its release than I have/will DA2. Not because I think DA2 is likely to be a lessor game, but rather because the facebook marketing is so distastful to me (for quite a number of differing reasons) that I personally feel less inclined to tell my friends they should involve themselves in the game. (The free flash game during DA:O by contrast was something I was happy to share and talk about both as a smile amusment in it's own right and as a very 'lite' sample of the game world).
Simply put, regardless of whether using facebook "works" or not in the short term/present tense there are still better ways to go about this and near as I can tell that becomes even more true the more long term the view.

I really can't see the reason why we
couldn't do this.There's 340 000 people in the group,let's say if only
10 000 people shared this 10 times,we already have 100 000,and I know
there's many people who shared above 10 times, and plus we had 3-4 days.I
think we have very good chances,but....there's always but...If we
try harder,there's always a hope,though..
It's not a total 1mill for the whole span of days (it was for the Demo but not for the facebook side)
"If each post from now to March 4, 2011 is shared and reaches 1,000,000 Impressions the day it is posted the tome will unlock." <-- pasted direct from the site post, it's 1mill per post *on the day of posting*. Which makes the prospect a lot more doubtful. (also question, do we have any info that says sharing more than once from the same person will count as more than one towards the goal? If that is indeed the case it becomes a lot more doable)

I'm not about to give out all my personal information to the facebook lunys and whats going on here, is EA and Bioware getting kickbacks or get more exposure from the facebook geeks. I bet most of them are more interested in getting dates, not playing video games.
You don't have to give out personal info. You only need an email address and the rest can be made up because facebook does not fact check, they just want an email account. However, if you created one right now and shared the post it would not help because you do not have any facebook friends.
Not to say I defend Facebook. I hardly go on it, but I know how it works.

But you'll buy a $15 rubber sword so you can get an amulet, right?

My real life last name is a common, present tense verb. Facebook's auto-filter decided it was fake, and it took me over a week to get my name approved because of it.
They do care about names, just... not necessarily in a clear fashion.

Sounds resonable to me. I think they are goin to be quiet intill the promo is over then state that the requirements were not met.darth shango wrote...
Each days post must be shared 50,000 times and generate 1 million impressions, but it doesn't say that there will be a post everyday. Maybe we hit the magic numbers and they're going to stop posting until after the contest is over (since it doesn't seem to be popular).....or we didn't even come close and they stopped posting because of the contest didn't come close to hitting the magic numbers. Oh well I wasn't a fan of this promotion, but I did participate.

Call To Arms- VICTORY! And a new challenge appears
Feb 28, 2011
We challenged our fans to download the Dragon
Age 2 demo one million times. This was a big challenge, but our fans
exceeded the goal! The Call to Arms has been won and the 2 in game tomes
have been unlocked.
Now a New Challenge has appeared. The third and most powerful tome is waiting to be unlocked. To unlock the tome “Of Things Not Lost” visit the Dragon Age Facebook Page and share that days post. If each post from now to March 4, 2011 is shared and reaches 1,000,000 Impressions the day it is posted the tome will unlock.
That doesn't include they will post on FB each day. (gaidering off)
Edit:
Still it would be welcome and most helpful if someone from BW commented here
