Maybe the ingame characters are starved for attention and they think that because someone is talking to them they want to go out with them.

Well, I agree that you should be able to control Shep, but can't you? So what if other chars think you're in a relationship, you still get to clear it up later. You being nice caused a misunderstanding, it happens.

You can't decide exactly what Shep will do/say in the game, you've got a few alternatives to chose from. Sometimes none of them will be to our liking. That I think we'll have to live with.
