NWN maxing out processor usage

This can't be right.
Been playing NWN for like 6 years on this computer.
The only thing I changed lately was I was running Defrag. That should however IMPROVE on the performance. Also I did download a lot of new HAK's lately.
My harddrives are almost full but I keep them at at last 4 gigs of free space each...hmm...maybe I'll look more into this...it could be something with the swapping file not getting enough space or in worst case problems with the harddrive itself.

Also the fan makes a hell of a noise at the same time.

This is not much room. I know the defrager need at least 15% free to properly defrag. So 4gigs is good if your hard drive is only 26Gigs in size.
Also if you have Virtual memory, And I have never been able to turn it Off on my XP system without crashing the system, It will eat away at that 4 Gigs free space also.

Something is seriously wrong and I don't know what.
I don't think NWN used to take this much CPU...and this is probably what makes the fan go haywire....

I know there was some windows updates a week ago or so....
Hmm...maybe time to get a new computer. This is one is kind of old...only it did work great so far and especially with NWN....(as it is XP). I've read about a lot of problems with running NWN on Windows 7 and I don't want to experience that....

Any ideas on Brand? I am leaning towards HP...want silent...maybe we don't have the same brands in Europe as you do in the states. We have mostly Acer but then also Packard Bell, HP, COmpaq and Dell...
I hope windows 7 doesn't give me a world of pain...
Thanks for the help so far guys...

Maybe something wrong with the computer in general. A few months ago the power unit died...so I got the a new one (same model/brand). It has worked ok since then. Only recently I noticed theese problems...with a fan accelerating heavily...

Yes, it could well be a hardware problem since your pc is not shining new any more
Greetings

PS: The experiences mentioned above lead me to the conclusion that the software installer for nwn does not work as intended on Windows 7.

I still would have Ad-Aware running...but that program can at least be turned off. (Well...I know anti-virus programs sometimes always screw with the system even if they are turned off. Maybe I uninstall them both just for testing. I really don't want to buy a new computer if I can avoid it. This one works great out of every other aspect....)
Anything else to try?

I uninstalled AVG anti-virus and also some other programs. Seems I have less noise now but it is still a bit irritating....

edit: I have never installed a temp monitor on my machine... just seen one in action. Been tempted to get one though.

I had to dismantle it to be able to clean it properly with a vaccum cleaner but it went pretty easy.
The fan doesn't go crazy anymore...
The fan came to a halt the a few minutes after I first had reassembled it and I was afraid I made something wrong...but I suspect some shaky connection to the powersupply. The connector is a small plastic thingie....

Edit: On second thought this doesn't seem to be very important. The most important thing is that metal is close to metal...

I was going to suggest this exact thing. I recently cleaned a friend's heatsink whose fan was revving up like a jet engine. It was PACKED with dust. After cleaning it out, the fan runs normally again.SuperFly_2000 wrote...
I think I solved it now. There was a lot of dust in between the metallic coolingflanges close to the CPU fan.
