So I'm torn between the 360 version on my new flat-screen or risking it with the PC version. I'd prefer the PC version because of the control setup, but here's my specs:

Processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU     T5750  @ 2.00GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.0GHz
Memory: 4094MB RAM
Vista Home Premium

Card name: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 - 32-bit
Display Memory: 2290 MB
Dedicated Memory: 499 MB
Shared Memory: 1791 MB

So whatd'ya think, folks? Is it going to run well enough that I should choose PC over 360?

Thanks for taking the time if you respond.

Is your operating system 32 or 64 bit? If it's 32-bit, a lot of that memory will not be recongized.

As always, a laptop graphics card is the weak spot of gaming. You will be able to run the game for sure, but possibly only on low.

If you prefer gaming/controls on Xbox equally or more than PC, choose Xbox.

Ya with the slow processor and the mobile graphics I don't think this will run real well. Sorry mate :(

Your video card is going to be a problem.  I would say either get the Xbox version or a desktop computer.

Your processor is fine. The GPU, though, isn't even officially supported. Theoretically it coudl run DA:O, but I wouldn't chance it.

Same questions here! Wondering if I should spring for the 360 version or if it will run fine on my desktop:

Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor 3500+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.2GHz

Memory: 2048MB RAM

OS: Windows XP

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS (AGP)

Display Memory: 256.0 MB

Thanks for your input!

You meet the minimum requirements so the game will run. With those specs though I don't think it will look better than the xbox version.

@Jehutey

Your Xbox version will look better than your PC version, assuming graphics is the only deciding factor between PC and Xbox for you.

Do either of you think that upgrading my videocard would substantially improve performance?

So far this is the possible alternative: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814161284

Thanks again!

Yes that card would substantially increase your performance.

At this point you really might want to consider upgrading to a motherboard with PCIe (I'm assuming yours doesn't since you are looking at an AGP card). This would really open up your options for video cards.

That is a much better card. But you're still using an AGP motherboard - if you intend to game for much longer on the PC, you're due for a total system upgrade. You can probably put together a new mobo, GPU, RAM, CPU and PSU for under $500 that would run DA:O like so much butter. I just swapped out a very similarly configured setup for a much better one (just buying RAM, CPU and GPU, though) for under $400.

It will help a lot for sure, but your CPU still will drag you down. You can probably expect medium quality, alright frame rate, but slow loading time.

EDIT: By the way, you should take a look at  HD5750/5770. They are only slightly more expensive than your alternative card, and they support DX11.

You should also consider what was mentioned above this post about a new set of hardwares. Right now AMD's quadcore 965 is also relatively cheap. That is a MASSIVE upgrade to your CPU.

Yeah, I kinda switched from computer gaming to consoles about two years ago and haven't upgraded since. I would love to play DA: O on high settings but for the amount of PC gaming I'm doing I don't think it'd be worth it to upgrade for any more than about $200.

I'm just a little disappointed because when I first got oblivion for the PC it would lag terribly unless I turned everything down, and even then I would still get about 25-30fps. When you say an alright frame rate are you thinking like 30-40fps?

Thanks again!

I disagree with the guy saying you need to get a massive CPU upgrade like an X4 965 (although if you do go this route, a 965 isn't a bad option if you want something competitive with an i7 for less money). Your GPU is going to be the bottleneck, not the CPU. You would honestly be fine with a Core 2 Duo or something as long as you get a nice video card.

As far as I know, my video card cannot be switched out. So the 360 version it is. Ugh. I wish I didn't enjoy PC gaming - the amount of expensive updates you're expected to do on a regular basis is such a huge waste of money.

No. The cost is not that bad. When was the last time you updated your PC? And how much did you spend on the original purchase?

Entry into PC gaming can be a bit expensive, but you're going to get a PC anyway, right? Everyone has and needs one. All these people have to do is spend on average an extra $200 on their PC's and they become gaming rigs. Upgrades should not be more than $200 every 2 years or so.

But people buy a cheap emachines from Wal-mart and then complain about "how expensive PC gaming is!"

For comparison sake I'm a hardcore PC gamer. So I don't do mid-range gaming PC's. They're fine, but I do extreme high resolution gaming and I enjoy graphics quality. Immediately console gamers would think I spend $5,000 on a gaming rig and another $5,000 every year for upgrades, which is ridiculous, of course!

The last time I bought a complete machine from scratch was 3 years ago. It was $1,000 and it was high end, something that would be overkill for Dragon age and most games out there. A PC gamer can build something better than my computer back then now a days for under $600. Since then I've invested about $500 on the PC in upgrades. That's $166 a year. That's it! Only $166 dollars a year on my hobby. How much do people spend on golf course fees? Toy plastic guitars for and drums for rhythm games on console? On wobbly platforms for the Wii? On rims for their cars? On food for lunch with their co-workers? On coffee at starbucks?

And that's just me, a high end PC gamer. A mid-range PC gamer will have just as much fun for about 50% the cost.

Exactly right Kinthalis.. it is only the initial expenditure on a gaming system that hurts. Assuming you do your research, you should have very little reason to upgrade your case, cooling system, monitor and peripherals, sound system, or hard drive. A CPU upgrade will often require a motherboard upgrade and possibly a RAM upgrade as well, but you shouldn't have to frequently upgrade the CPU. A graphics card upgrade could possibly trigger a power supply upgrade depending on what you have, or very rarely a CPU upgrade if you think it's bottlenecking the card. Occasionally you might make a media drive upgrade (like floppy to CD to DVD to Blue-ray, or buying a solid state drive) but that's not very common either.

Everything else is luxury. I would say PC gaming is more expensive than consoles, but not by as much as people think.

My question is, when they say "recommended specs" does that mean the specs that are used to run the game at max?

It's a laptop, which is required for my job. Cost $1200 about a year ago. Getting a seperate gaming system PC would be silly.

Oh, and if you're comparing prices to other hobbies like golf, you also have to include all of the games you buy every year.

Which are cheaper for PC than for consoles :)

@ ironhammer40: the recommended specs MAX out the game according to the devs and the press who have played it.

So it would be silly to buy hardware simply because it isn't required for your job? I don't see the reasoning here.

The 2600 should be ok at lower resolutions for medium, even the mobile version. It does have the full shaders and everything.
