er, is there a particular reason that Singularity doesn't last long enough for me to throw out a warp when the stated duration is 25 seconds?

singularity shorts out or ends early for various reasons.

1. # of targets. Wide singularity handles 4 I think and heavy 6. It makes wide fairly short sometimes since its bigger area hits more people.

2. Defenses. Multiple defended targets in the area seem to make it end quicker

3. You are too close to it. If you touch the singularity it ends.

Still it is my favorite power int he game and adept is my first choice for a class.

I would also suggest using squad pulls to help set up warp bombs, or squad warps to trigger them. Personally, I prefer to have Shepard do the warping because his warps hit harder with upgrades/armor. Jack and Samara are very good Pull bots, as their passives reduce cool down time. Jacob is not as good at Pulling, but can add Squad Incendiary ammo, which can be helpful.

Also, try casting the singularity against protected targets, then using a weapon to knock off their protection. Usually, Warp is ready to launch as soon as they leave the ground.

I'd recommend a Caster Sentinel, simply because like you said they have the easiest time against all form of defences. About the lack of crowd control, you can opt for Reave instead (and evolve it to Area Reave) since it does around the same damage as Warp except over time and minus the Warp explosions. Bring Samara and Miranda to set up Warp explosions instead for extra CC.

I find it strange that you seem to hate shotguns to the core, and yet personally for me playing an Assault Sentinel (who primarily uses Shotguns) gave me a much easier time than a pure caster Sentinel. Assault Armor + Guardian greatly increase your survivability compared to the usual Power Armor + Raider used by casters.

I still use Power Armor + Guardian as a caster. I love short cooldowns.

Been having a blast with a caster type sentinel using the geth AR. (had fun with the assault type also using shotguns).

currently:
area overload
area reave
area cryo
power armor
guardian
and just 1 pt in throw (for a melee like attack if needed)

not a "power" build, but entertaining :)

This has already been comprehensively answered, but one thing you definitely need to know about Singularity is that it is not to be used like the rest of the class's signature powers i.e. used in virtually every situation you encounter. I think one of the big reasons why the Adept got such a poor name for itself was because of this.

Singularity is not anywhere near as powerful as the other class's signature abilities - the Adept itself is meant to use all of their abilities in combination rather than largely rely on one power. Singularity is best used on plastering a single opponent down while you deal with any defences they have - in your case it sounds like you were waiting for singularity to chew them up. It's essentially to be used more like Specialised Stasis in ME1 - only with the caveat that you can now warp bomb everyone with it.

If you're ever in a situation where the enemy is human-sized and lacking defences, Pull is almost always a better option for a Warp Bomb.

It depends what you're looking for.

The easiest of the caster classes [IMHO] is the Engineer. The Exploding Drone with a very short cool-down can help lock down the field and keep the bad guys busy. Take a Sniper Rifle as your bonus weapon and you're in good shape.

Next I'd try a Sentinel. I would still take Assault Armor as it adds a good level of protection and when it blows you're still left with shields. If you had an enemy on top of you there's a decent chance they'll be stunned when your armor blows so you can get away.

Shame you're against shotguns, because I echo the sentiments made by others; adept + gps is a beast and easily my favourite way to play. Can be used comfortably at any range (apart from extreme long range), so you can avoid visceral cqc if that's your preference. Definitely worth buying the firepower pack, if you haven't yet.

Engineer requires more thought than the adept (that's what I find), and not as visually satisfying, but can be more mentally stimulating, so may be better for you.
Sentinel requires the least thought, although it can go from boring tank to reasonably diverse power user, depending on how you play it. I don't have much experience with sentinel though, so don't take my word for it.

Any of those can play any way you like - dealing with crowds in one go, or taking them down one by one.

In my opinion Adept is more fun but Sentinel/Engineer is more powerful.
