I question the 60 hours for DA:O. That can't be an average playthrough... unless it's for all DLC and letting all spoken dialog happen at normal pacing.

I was usually at 45-50, and that was for doing absolutely everything... including some backtracking.

Hopefully DA:2 is a full 40, and it isn't also generously rounded up.

Dragon Age: Origins

Dragon Age II

400,000 Words
2,500 Cinematics
500 Characters
38,000 Spoken Lines
40 Hours of Gameplay

This is not a bad thing at all. In DA2, the Champion has 1 origin story. In DAO, the Warden had 6 origin stories. So, to me, the DA2 content seems pretty beefy.

Totally agree with you!!!

I'd prefer one good story for PC than 6 not so deep.
500 interesting NPC's better than 1000 boring.

There's already one review that seems to suggest otherwise. At least in the case [of] companions.

Maybe I'm missing part of the conversation, but are you suggesting that the companions are no good this time around? In the podcast they were talking about how they never stuck with specific companions because they were genuinely interested to see everyone. Maybe they just never got enough of an attachment to any of them that it didn't matter if the roster was going through a revolving door?

Really though, I never found any of the characters memorable aside from Morrigan and Alistair. Those two and their banter elevated the game from it's cliched plot and tired gameplay. The only thing good about Awakening was Anders.

LOL, forgot the "of" before "companions".

Anyway, it's not my suggestion, I read about that particular bit here. It's just one reviewer's opinion, though, so keep that in mind.

IMO, Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana and Zevran had quite a bit of dialogue, more so pursuing romance. Alistair has to be the one with the most for obvious reasons.

It has less words spoken, yet there is a voiced protagonist. What the ****.

That's one of my concerns...

I just don't see it. Even if you remove all the race related dialogue or versions of dialogue... Off-topic bit: um, aren't dwarves or elves a species and not a race? argh...

Same amount of money, less amount of game. Seems reasonable.

60 doesn't sound rounded up it sounds like an average to me. If you look at feedback on this forum people varied between around 30 hours and up to over 100 hours for DAO. The devs have said DA2 contians more content than ME2 so 40 souinds like an average to me.

So what do they mean by cinematics?

Like short ingame cutscenes?

I dont think there was 1000 cinematics in DA:O o.O

I think 30-40 hours is fine for an RPG. I like to see them in the 70-80 hour range, but even then those games (usually JRPGs) involve lots of mindless leveling (like dodging lighning 100 times in a row to unlock a weapon upgrade). A 30-40 hour game is one that I will most likely replay, while longer games get into the "do I really want to get through that crappy level again" mode. My own preference.

ME1 took about 26-28 hours, and I have probably replayed that one 50 times. Final Fantasy X, I logged over 250 hours on my one "game," but I don't truly replay that one. I load from a save, play for a while (just for nostalgia) and put it away.

I really don't mind that it's shorter. My spring break is next week, and I'll probably be busy. Forty hours and a tighter experience are fine by me.

Fourty hours? It's going to take me three weeks or more to beat this game. I think I'm fine with that lol.

Sounds good to me. While I loved it I found DA:O rather too long and drawn-out (esp. the Deep Roads) and a more cinematic experience will be great.

A lot of comments saying they prefer 'quality over quantity'(who doesn't?) but we cant argue about quality based on those statistics. What we can say is that there is less gameplay.

Now with DA:O, like other Bioware games, you can rattle through the main game in not much time if you're looking to blitz through to the ending. What a lot of players do like though is the optional gameplay, side quests, companion quests, chances to make more money etc. So based on those statistics its clearer that DA:2 will lack in optional gameplay.

If you're looking for a more focused story experience then you can find it any Bioware game, its the main quest, but for those of us who like to take their time with well crafted worlds and rich enviroments this is a dissappointment.

So for those who seemed to have thrown their copy of DA:O into a river as soon as they heard about DA2, this won't perturb them in the slightest. For those who still hold some reverance for DA:O this will feel like another kick in the teeth.

The game length thing has me mildly wary. Mildly.

(Also off topic: it's not pleasant reading when even the most thoughtful and well-reasoned posts confuse "fewer" with "less" or just eschew "fewer" altogether. Good lord, sinners.)

Just one question, John Epler. Why do you like dismissing opinions that aren't favorable to the game? Your one post in this thread was good until you ended with "But hey! Opinions." That gives the impression that you don't find opinions valid unless they are pandering.

Alternatively, it was 'But hey! opinions' because I realize everyone has their own opinion and they're entitled to it.

Which is rather the opposite of what you're suggesting.

This would really pretty much settle it for me. I think I poured about 54 hours into ME2 (I like to take my sweet time with games) and that was a wonderfully satisfactory experience, length-wise. If someone would be kind enough to post a source on the quoted bit, I think I'll preorder the game right away.

I'd have to say that origins numbers are most likely counting addons and awakening. I did ever quest in origins explored and got some of the best items intuit game and it was still only like 45 hours of gameplay.

Those figures are for localisation, DA was localised before any DLC so they are for  the base game.

I think it was in the demo Mike Laidlaw did when he played FemHawke for the first time.
