But let me just say that those numbers...made me very happy. To me that looks like that content that is in game is going to be richer, with less throwaway characters etc.

To me that looks like its shorter and tells absolutely nothing else.

Irrelevant Analogy Time: A newspaper is shorter than a phone directory...but infinitely more enjoyable to read.

Who cares how many lines of text there was in DA:O when sometimes half the choices led to the same resulting response.

I love how they completely minimize DA:O down to 60 hours and (I'm assuming here) maximize DA2 at 40 hours. Based on the early numbers from Bioware being thrown out about DAO's length (80-120 hours); I'm going to assume that DA2's average playthrough is probably around the 30 hour mark. We'll see next week.

Why do you assume that they're minimizing Origins' time and maximizing DAII's? If they're going to present a bias either way, I'd think they'd be consistent. Or is it just because you're going to assume whatever confirms your pre-conceptions, despite it being illogical?

Considering how wildly different the self-reported playing times for DAO, ME1-2, etc are on this forum and elsewhere I think we'll all have to see for ourselves.

Indeed. I can almost guarantee someone is going to blitz the game in 14 hours, and someone else will crawl through it and finish it in 110.

Take into account that the switching of he/she/elf/human/dwarf dialogue makes up a good percent of the dialogue.

But yeah, on a whole I expect DA2 to be a much more focused experience.

Definitely that, and I swear beyond even the origins portions, you have to play the game so many god damn times to experience all the dialogue. I'm all for replay value, but there is a TON of obscure quests and dialogue in DAO. I like to be pleasantly suprised by something new, but i've found so many little changes in my 5+ playthroughs that I know there's a ton of things I miss out on because of my habits on choosing dialogue. For the majority of people that only played it once or twice, you can imagine the amount of writing and effort that 90% of players don't even experience.

I plan on leaving my characters frequently stretching in the courtyards of Kirkwall while I go make a sandwhich...

Hmm so even with a voiced protagonist, there are still alot less spoken lines than in DA:O.

In an age where the average game length is 10 hours or less, why is a 40 hour average a bad thing? Origins had at least 10 hours of filler that should've been cut to begin with.

Because judging by trends, in 10 years time or even less, the average single player game length will barely be 1 hour or less. THAT is a frightening thought.

But thousands more conversations, because aside from party banter DAO had none.

I will take quality over quantity any day because, lets be honest, dialogue in DAO wasnt exactly quality.
EDIT: what I meant was dialogue 'cinematics'(If you can call them cinematics in DAO), not the writing itself.

When reading this you have to remember that DA2 has a voiced main character, which will have most of the lines obviously. With that in mind, the smaller scope of dialogue and voice acting for DA2 is even more underwhelming.
Instead we get more cinematics. If the future of gaming goes more and more towards cinematics then this whole medium will die. There are enough cinematics out there already, they are called movies!

I remember when people were lodging this criticism against games becoming more cinematic with the first Playstation. And guess what, gaming hasn't died. It's grown significantly.

More like Hawke needs some time to stretch in the courtyard for a while, so you'd better find something else to do cuz he ain't movin'!

You guys aren't taking into account the fact that the projected -20 hours is due to a lack of fade sequence.

Missing the joke aside, how would you know?

Did you pirate the game or something?

I think the devs said there would be a Fade sequence. I got the joke though.

This isn't surprising at all, especially given how enamored video game devs have become with crafting cut scenes. Maybe they should should focus on dialog and gameplay instead of trying to be amateur film makers.

Then it's a good thing that the folks responsible for the former are not also responsible for the latter, isn't it?

Moreover, the challenges of working in an interactive medium are rather different than the challenges of working in a static medium such as film, and while some techniques may transfer from one medium to the other, there are others that are unique to either film or video games. So to suggest that they're easily swapped, with one getting the same fulfilment in either area isn't really accurate.

But hey! Opinions.

Well i just hope the fade sequence looks similar to the way it looks in Awakening.  I found the fade in Origins to be very annoying with the way it looked.

more is better? it shouldnt matter as long as the story is good. Ill take a good movie that is 90 minutes long over a 160 min flick that is merely ok. We havent even played the game...

Like others also have said; I value quality over quantity. Just because a game is long, doesn't mean that it's better than a different game that is (significantly) shorter. A lot of games have proved this point already.
