If you answer that in a positive way the quest will play itself out even if you don't have him in your party.
[Realized this after first hand experience with that particular plot.]

No need for travel with Zevran himself, just supply him with gifts and he'll ask you a question when you approach him at camp.

You're right, I just remembered that I only had Zevran with me exactly once, which was right after his personal encounter, which I got without him in my party. *groan*

Being the most annoying character in a cast full of whining, one-dimensional cliches* is quite an accomplishment, mind you.
*Thankfully, there is Shale. He should really pursue his "smash them while they sleep" desires and save me the trouble of listening to my NPCs bicker and moan. Alistair has his funny moments, but he would be better left to comic relief alone.

Too many cigarettes for Shale, then.

He's funny, intelligent, has a solid background which undoubtedly explains his motivations and if you're willing to dig into it you discover there are feelings and regrets burried deep down inside despite it all.
And once fully specialised in assasin and double wielding he actually makes a great fighter, you only have to make sure he can backstab.
+ his banter with other party members is absolutely hilarious and can be compared only to Oghren and Shale.
However if you found all the party companions one-dimensional and whiny I guess you never really took yourself time to get to know them and have a low approval with most of them

Hah, he was barely out of "interested" for me before he propositioned me to go to his tent, but I was romancing Alistair so that wasn't gonna happen.
Uhhh...from what I read you can threesome Alister if your relationship with him is super high.

Yup, great conclusion.

... it gets lonely when you're out adventuring. I wasn't about to fall for the witch's charms, and the chantry girl won't give me the time of day... I even tried romancing Whynn but to no avail.

Shale, she is really too curious, I loved when she asking Zevran about my mage but disliked when Zevran replied to her something like :It doesn't botherme if someone watch us doing it" >_>

Wynne - her stoicism is the complete antithesis to the idea of a whining, self-pitying adolescent. Sure, some of the conversations with her can be a tad morbid, but she is an old woman so death is going to be on her mind (makes even more sense when you find out certain other details). She is content with where she is though. Not once does she whine about her position in life, and welcomes her inevitable death as any person who has lived such an accomplished life should. She is a very strong and beautiful person, albeit rigid and traditionalist to a fault. And despite my dislike of the Chantry, and the imprisonment of Mages within the Circles, she still managed to become my favorite character in the game.
Sten - Also very stoic, but given to the passions from time to time. Here is an emotionally strong warrior that comes from a noble warrior tradition. He's not one to dwell on the past at all -- inaction, in fact, borders on the immoral with him. He loses his sword (and with it his honor), but for him, what's done is done. He accepts everything that comes his way with an "amor fati" approach to life. Here is someone who has lost everything (and when you find him, that almost includes his very life). But what does he do? Does he sink into himself and whine about his circumstances? To the contrary, he joins your battle against the darkspawn hoping to find his redemption and reclaim the honor that he has lost. Here is a great warrior and a man of action. How he could be thought of as "whiny" is completely beyond my imagination.
Morrigan, although I dislike her, is also another character that doesn't fit the description of a whiner. I could go on, but I think you get my point. I hate to have to be that guy who tells you that you just didn't "get" it -- but if you think your party is filled with whiners, save for Shale, then sorry, but you just didn't get it.

Also, for all of the people who are passing over Zevran, you're seriously missing out. He also became one of my favorite characters.

He is a very irritating character. He is a shameless flirt, an ineffective fighter, and an opportunist.
Ineffective? He can keep himself alive real nicely with avoidance and backstabs he make hurts + for me he is only one who can open those locked boxes/doors, little extra loot never hurts, i made sure he would not try to make any moves on me though.
