Hey there. Well, I am a fan of the whole D&D games. Played Baldurs gate,ID, and the 1st NwN...well i never got around to the 2nd one..i know it is kinda late..but should i bother with it? I enjoyed the first NwN mainly for making my own Mods, and playing with others online in their Mods, and persistent servers. Some people say the first NwN is still better. Well, anyhow, is the online cappabilities of this game stable? Is it a pain..etc. I am thinking to download the game via steam, and also my friend will get one. We want to be able to play online together. ( Going into other peoples servers/mods, as well as creating our own) So...ya...what can i expect? I mean as far as compared to the original NwN ..the good, the bad..the ugly? Thanks so much for your input!

I loved NWN1, but after doing NWN2 i won't go back.
It's not perfect, but it does a lot of things right that NWN1 could not do. Lot of great creative work in NWN2 you can enjoy, and it's still being created--just like in NWN1 --- but it's different since the tools NWN2 gives us are different and the things created tend to be a lot less in quantity and a lot more in depth. Lot of folks have very in depth PW's, and some amazing SP modules - good portion of which are of equal or better quality than the official expansions.
And the community who works on NWN2 is very helpful.
Now is it it a pain? I'm not the person to ask.

No game presently - or in foreseeable future - offers as much as NWN2. No successor is in the works.
Well, maybe the esoteric Project 9... but I guess that still has a few years of development time... at the very least.
So all in all I'd say NWN2 is very worth it!

The biggest problem of NWN2 are the hideous animations, other than that, it's all well and good.

I played NWN1 for years, solo & online on loads of downloaded modules & persistent worlds. Like Pain. - since I've played NWN2, there's really no going back - although the first game had (& still has with the CEP etc.) so much going for it, NWN2 has more, and looks much prettier to boot.
The Good:
The Persistent worlds are awesome - with pretty much something for everyone, and same goes for the community made modules, although you'll need the two official expansions - Mask of the Betrayer & Storm of Zehir - to play a lot of them because of the extra bells & whistles they contain.
As you know, the toolset is what drives Neverwinter's longevity. Its a bit of a steep learning curve, but there are a load of tutorials around ("Don't Panic - Hitchikers guide to the toolset" is what got me over the initial hurdles) and if you've been successful with the NWN1 toolset, you'll have a blast.
And did I mention how pretty everything is?
Bad:
Only problem I've had is when the friend I've played online with for years changed his ISP from SKY (UK) - suddenly he can't connect to any NWN1 or NWN2 online servers. We still don't know why, but that's really the only problem we've had with multi-player.
Given how NWN2 works, any downloads are significantly bigger than with NWN1 - depending on what your ISP, this may be a problem or not.
The Ugly:
The Camera controls can still cause problems until you're used to them - scenery has a habit of getting in the way - but search around the forums & you'll see what the current advice is.
You're not late - there's still an awful lot going on.

It all depends on what you look for as a gamer. NWN2 will probably appeal to you on some levels and disappoint on others. That was my experience anyway.
The difference between the two for me really came in the expansion - the more emphasised romance component and the need to handle the *** Minor Spoiler*** meter. And the camera controls were umm awkward IMO.
I found the story quite cliched, though it improved in MOTB. I also played NWN2 before I updated NWN1 and played with the new classes, so that was cool for a while too.
I haven't gotten into NWN2 mods yet, so cannot comment on that area.
Like all things, you'll be the ultimate judge of your own experience, so I advise you to jump in and try it.

NWN2 has a lot more potential for doing cool things than NWN1, but it's also a steeper learning curve for building, meaning that mods are fewer, though generally of a better quality. Also, I hear multiplayer is not as streamlined as it could be. Apparently many people have much success with MP and Persistant Worlds, though.
So, don't expect it to be issue-less, but by and large a lot of the troubles with it are well-known, and often fixes and work-arounds are known too. The camera controls, for example, were indeed made hideously awkward in a recent patch, but it's not hard to tweak the ini file to fix that. It's something that you probably shouldn't have to do, but at least it's possible to minimise the issue.

I actually had a similar question, so rather than making my own thread I'll just tack it on here (hope no one minds?)
Basically I played and loved NWN for years, got NWN2 with my graphics card a while back and played it very briefly. Missed the radial menu something awful and didn't get used to the camera angles.
However now I'm wondering if I might have been a bit hasty in my disappointment. I may have tried it again sooner actually but my computer broke down on me for a while too (yes, I was going crazy) and this is the first of me having one that'd be able to play it.
Do the menus and the camera angle issues get any less jarring?
Also, is there anything else that's been a particularly glaring problem?
Most likely I'll just install it and play, but I'd rather go in prepared! =)

Exploration mode camera is the most similar of the camera modes to nwn1. Also welcome.

For me the camera gets much more bearable (exploration mode) if I turn down the mouse rotation speed to almost zero (I think I got it like 5-10 notches up from zero), and turn off shadows. I noticed shadows cause these odd increase-and-decreases in the camera rotation speed, I guess my GFX card can't handle it.

Firstly, if you are going to play this game, make sure it's fully updated. The first few updates in particular make a massive difference to the performance - that game was never really meant to be shipped without them, I don't think, but it was already late so they hadn't the time.
Secondly, read this (the wikia article on the camera). Even if it doesn't fix your issue directly, the stuff it has on editing the ini file explains how to mess about with things to get it how you want it. The camera in NWN2 is pretty messed up, especially with the later updates for some reason, but changing those values can pretty much fix it if you're prepared to spend a little bit of time experimenting (an annoyance, but once you've done it, that's it).
