5 minutes for EACH time you want to make an adjustment.

That builds on fast.

Plus time for loading screens.

Yeah I'm making custom faces now and its already getting annoying. >_>

Everytime I want to make a tweak I have to start all over again. This is ridculous. Granted it's not as rage inducing as ME2's but gah. I'm so used to being able to jump right in tweaking from Origins.

That's one of the reasons, sure. Why can't it also be these?

Because when asked about it the lead developer provided that one reason; so i don't know why there's need to invent more reasons when the person who made the game thought that one to be sufficient. Posted Image

once again, sloppy design decision (basically equating intro with trailer, minus bare-bones cc choices) which should be duly solved by modding.  deep breaths!

I think the problem what people have is using a "default" Hawke for any amount of time, because he/she is the default and not some mystical appearance.

Whatever you want to think is fine. There have been other times when the allotment of reasoning is spread out.

Regardless, so what if it's an excuse? If it's an excuse that makes perfect sense, that doesn't discredit it.

You can choose dialogue and play combat in a trailer? :o

I dislike the default male Hawke (though not as much as Sheploo), but I love that character creation follows Varric's ‘Then let me tell you what really happened....’

I think it's slick and perfectly placed. But that's me.

Wait, what? You don't get to see the skin tone selection, so where does this come from?

Save right before killing the Ogre then. Granted, you can't change gender or class, but still.

Well they used default Hawke. If they used a 3 metres high, really badass looking guy who looks nothing like default or any custom Hawke and shot lighting out of his butt, then I'd laugh and get the joke about the exaggerated part. But that's not what Bioware did. They present you the default Hawke as if saying, this is the one you should play with, our Hawke, the real Hawke.

Bingo.

The EA spyware that lives on your system will then conclude that so many people play default characters , you really don't need custom faces at all.

Whether they can get away with it without being called racist , or whatever, probably find out next game after ME. Unless this one tanks of course, then they may go back to the drawing board.

Can't save in the demo.

And will we be able to save at that part in the normal game? How can we without a character name?

That was just to clarify the possible relationship of cause and effect -- a reason drives the design and is a cause behind it, while for excuse it's opposite, it's just something made up afterwards to fit the design and so driven by the design itself.

In terms of either role playing or convience, this new system is a terrible idea. And to think they did it because they don't want players from a certain demography to get bored by the lack of "action" at the beginning of the game just makes me cringe. It's especially bad for people like me who want their custom Hawke to look perfect. Without being able to edit your morph in the toolset, I probably have to go through the initial section dozen of times before I can even start playing the game.

The way we've chosen to do character creation in Dragon Age II is a little different than what you may be used to, but I think it works fine. Try it out and see what you think of it.

I tried it out and find it annoying. It doesn't "work fine" (personal opinion, obv)

It's not that "Varric feels like it" - it's that the popular image of Hawke is that he/she is white/the defaults.

There is nothing odd or new about this. See popular images of Jesus.

If the game was taking place two thousand years after Hawke's death and there was no preserved records of Hawke's physical description at that point, sure.

But as that's not the case Hawke's popular image being locked like that makes about as much sense as popular image of Obama being a caucasian.

That's the thing that disturbs me most. I don't understand it. It would not be any harder to make the exaggerated part with custom hawke. I have no clue why they did it and it drives me crazy.

...and this. Nothing left for me to say. Thanks, guys! Posted Image

Exactly, without a profile for the save to fall under you're up the creek broskie. That is of course assuming they'll use the same system as DA:O which might have been streamlined.

Would have been coold instead of using the default Hawk to atleast pull a ME2 and hide the character.

Mage = Black Hood and Robe
Rogue = Black Hood and Leather Armour
Warrior = Black Plate Armour

Have all their skin covered and their face blacked out or have some sort of ninja mask. At least that wouldn't be stepping on any sort of immersion.

Hmm, this is true. We ought to be able to save during some parts of the demo at least. Having an autosave right before would be too much to ask I guess.

I'm not that worried about the Hawke that I make, it is what the presets turn up for the family. I don't know if the mirror changes them too if you change Hawke later.

And it would add a whole "mysterious" factor to the Champion rather than having him/her look like an average joe in fancy armor.

Yeah expecially since the CC was disabled in the demo. XD

And there's that. I have to make a decent Hawke without making Carver/Bethany end up looking fugly. That's going to be a balancing act. :pinched:

I think the best course of action would be a randomly generated Hawke at each start up.

If i recall right it was confirmed that if you use the mirror to change your appearance, the family members change accordingly (i.e. if you use different preset as base i guess, being that's what determines their looks)

That's not really the purpose though, the purpose is to get people used to a default character appearence. If you take a typical "I want to get into action" attitude, what do you do when confronted with the customisation screen ?
They have already admitted the game is frontloaded so action comes before character. They clearly did that for a reason.
Most people who only care about the action will just skip right by and you will end up with EA data showing that an overwhelming numner of people used default.

Wait a minute....people are really upset about this?

Hey, atleast you can skip most of the dialogue and its only what 5 mins? Better than ME2 where you couldnt skip anything.

Seriously though theres far worse things in the world to be upset about, this aint one imo. :)

I imagine some complaints here would be that you'd also have to cover up either Bethany or Carver, spend time on resources, etc. Personally, all steps with which I would have been fine. Since I have plans for non-white Hawkes, it makes me cringe a bit to see that my first Lady Hawke will be whitewashed. If that's addressed, that would be one thing, but I somehow doubt it will be (that would be a nightmare to code consistently and such, I imagine).
