Considering how sweet that five minutes is I probably won't mind Image IPB

Well, that's understandable, to each his own I guess; personally while I love the new combat system in DA2, just blowing stuff up mindlessly is NOT something I'm looking for in DA2. And prioritizing an extra button press over 5 minutes of redundant opening sequence just seem a rather strange choice imho.

Won't The Black Emporium DLC solve the need to start a new profile over an over again?

God damn, why are you guys cutting out bits and pieces?

My post was intended to be read as a whole.

You're ignoring entire chunks of it just to suit your argument.

Bull, point 3 just put words in my mouth for what my background would have to be to justify the protagonist having divergent ethnicity.

A female warrior on the British Isles would need just as much justification ... so it's irrelevant to the argument that black would be out of the ordinary, it's no more out of the ordinary than a female warrior.

No I definitely see where you're coming from, but I'm just really looking forward to playing the game.  I was just surprised to see that people were complaining about such a small thing when the entire game is going to be so good.  Could it have been done better?  Probably.  Is it a big deal? Not really.

You do know that's probably going to take alot longer than 5 minutes to get to right? At least I hope it does, I am under the impression that you will have to complete a side quest before you "unlock" the bonus items.

Kinda makes you think that any custom Hawke you make is going to be the "boring real" Hawke not the "amazing legendary" Hawke lol

Oh I complain about all sorts of things. :P I just do it on the off chance that all my complaining might change something for the better (better in my opinion anyway) in DA3, no matter how unlikely that is. I mean, without all the complaining with DA:O, many of the improvements they made to DA2 might not have happened. At least that's how I see it.

I see Image IPB  I'm for most of the changes they've made, and the few that I don't like are so minor as to be irrelevant.  While yes, it MIGHT get anoying to play the same five minutes OVER and OVER to get my character to look right, I'm not really that worried about it.  I mean, I've been salivating over DA2 since the Destiny Trailer.

This....

Now we haven't seen the game yet so we can't know for sure it will be this way but...

We do know that the beginning scene is not the only time that Varric "exaggerates." If this happens multiple times in the story when Varric starts "embelishing"...its like oh...this doesn't even remotely resemble my character...its way cooler than my character ever can be. For me it would give me a very dissatisfying view of my character. In Origins I always felt like a badass and progressively more so as the game went on. I mean I am the Grey Warden....What this seems to imply to me in DA2 is oh wow look at that awesome character...oh wait....that isn't my character *switches to real story* oh...this is my character...exponentially less cool than that guy I just played.

Again this might be different in the actual game...So I will reserve my judgement until I've actually seen it in action. Do we know for sure that all the "embelished" scenes will be default Hawke?

Also...I want to see my custom Hawke in that badass armor too!

The way we've chosen to do character creation in Dragon Age II is a little different than what you may be used to, but I think it works fine. Try it out and see what you think of it.

I tried it out and find it annoying. It doesn't "work fine" (personal opinion, obv)

You are aware that in all likelyhood all the other "exagerated" portions will be of your CC, right?

I dont see it as a problem as i see this thread as just a reason to complain about something.

Really people nitpicking again eh? I hope a mod does the right thing and locks this thread. This thread is just a reason to complain about something that really doesnt matter. Its pointed out that Varric is lying, your Hawkes story doesnt actually start until he mentions Ostogar and Lothering burning.

What matters to you and what matters to other people are two completely different things, clearly. Just because it does not matter to you, I think you can see plenty of evidence that it matters to others.

Get over yourself already.

Given you won't get to access it until Kirkwall if i understand it right, that may require x hours of playing and putting up with botched appearance until you're able to correct the mistake. Quite faster to just restart, even with the needless delay of the "legendary" intro battles.

Are we sure that the demo is going to be the actual intro of the real game? Maybe it was just made to 'demo' the game.. Has it been confirmed that it is part of the actual beginning of the game?

So why does he get so much right, but the ethnicity wrong? He thinks white people are more heroic?

I understand the technical reasons, but I don't understand this in game justification ...

There is no in game justification beyond "Varric felt like it."  He just happened to feel like making fake Hawke look like the default, and he just happened to feel that way because that's what default Hawke looks like.  Maybe it's like The Usual Suspects, and he just picked a detail from something in that room.    Who cares?  It doesn't mean anything more than "This is the default appearance. See what you think of it in-game. Don't like? No problem: don't use. Here, have a character creator."

It's not that "Varric feels like it" - it's that the popular image of Hawke is that he/she is white/the defaults.

There is nothing odd or new about this. See popular images of Jesus.

If the game was taking place two thousand years after Hawke's death and there was no preserved records of Hawke's physical description at that point, sure.

But as that's not the case Hawke's popular image being locked like that makes about as much sense as popular image of Obama being a caucasian.

Enh, not really.  The real story ended up being more outlandish than the legend, as Cassandra herself noted to Varric.  And more interesting.  It's actually "Heroic Champion of Legend Hawke" who's a bit boring, what with being Standard Awesome Hero Guy/Gal who nigh-singlehandedly does it all, and can toss off blase (and cliche) one-liners to little 'sis or bro in the heat of combat.

My gripe is that as a Warrior or a Rogue you are automatically a 2-Hander or a Dual Wielder to start, you can't chose otherwise until after the exaggerated part, at least that was how it was in the demo and I would assume its like that up until after the CC when the inventory opens up that you could actually say I want to be a Sword & Shield or an Archer.

You're thinking about the modern era, with modern media.  99.99% of people living in Thedas never saw Hawke, and those that did may not have even known who they were looking at.

If every consequent "Legend" sequence of Varric's story uses the default Hawke appearance, then I'll concede to the popular image argument. Before that happens though, forgive me if I rather take Bioware's words on why they put CC after the action sequence instead of the justifications people came up with on their own.
