I've played both and I agree on the area of combat. Morrowind wasn't about combat though. Morrowind was a sandbox, whereas Arx Fatalis was basically one massive dungeon crawler. The combat is more important in Arx Fatalis whereas the world building, setting and lore is more important in Morrowind.

Personally, I think combat is overrated in RPGs. I appreciate games that allow for different playstyles. It's one of the glaring weaknesses in the Elder Scrolls games for me, and why I'm a fan of games like Fallout and Deus Ex. Combat is merely another option, not the only option. It's also a glaring weakness in Bioware games. I believe Arx allowed stealth though so that's another plus.

Also, as for Arkane helping Bethesda on combat, proof is in the pudding. Skyrim's demo combat videos give off a Dark Messiah vibe.

I felt no Dark Messiah vibe. Combat looks the same as Oblivion's combat apart from spells being shown in your hands when you select a spell, that's the only thing that matches Dark Messiah's combat. Dark Messiah was pretty much a linear action RPG anyway unlike Arx.

I hate all the people who refuse to believe that any rpg is better even though it was out in 2002 (I think) but I enjoyed both oblivion and morrowind (oblivion more but I think that's because I played it first)

It's an ancient game. Only real men play daggerfall. /smugface

TES is a great series. The story is amazing and Morrowind, there are very few games that you can actually beat the main quest in 15 minutes. Com'on!

More like 7:30 minutes

EDIT: lol, someone even broke the record

Not a nightmare...though it did have bugs...like an area being suddenly flooded except for partially invisible hills (with just the top showing....) and I've never liked first-person perspective in games..and it was too easy to accidently break the law (especially in Tribunal when people would attack you and everyone else would just ignore the fight and continue on their pre-set path even if it meant passing between you and your wood-elf attacker).

But overall I loved it

I thought Morrowimd was good, but I loved Oblivion, only thing I didn't like was the scaled enemies. I hear Skyrim will be like Fallout 3 in that regard.
