I think the mass request for online play thus far will lead to some kind of online feature. They sure could please a lot of people if they let them fight with or against their friends online.
I also think it would be cool if you could cross-system play. EX: I own DO: A on the PC, but I wanna play with my buddy who has it fro Xbox, no problem! Just enter his gamertag and whatever else they might need and BAM! I can play with my buddy! that's probably harder to do than one would expect though... Oh well. I'm a hopefull, and I hope they add in some sweet multiplayer stuff.

no chance? Way to be a downer, man.
It's a realistic answer. People have asked for multiplayer for several years now, if they were going to have it, they would have it already.

I don't mean to be a downer; in fact, I think it's quite likely that if DA:O does well you'll see Bioware develop and release a complementary multiplayer game. You'll just have to pay for it. That's what I meant when I said it would be stupid - it would be stupid for them to tear apart and modify the game to add in a multiplayer kludge for free or a small DLC-level fee when they could just release a more expensive full-featured product that would more easily pay for itself. But it will be a much better product than some multiplayer expansion, which is good for folks who want multiplayer.
I do think it's possible that there will be online features using you DA:O characters, like some sort of arena flash game in which you could battle other players, but I doubt they'll modify the game itself.

Do you think they would consider an online-expansion that people would have to pay for? Like... 30$ for mini co-op campaign with some other online features? Or do you think they would be more likely to just move on to their next full game?

Ah, we might've had a small misunderstanding then. I don't think any online play would affect any offline play. If they were to have online play I was kind of thinking the same thing, an arena, or maybe a co-op survival mode, you know?

Maybe. The issue with big expansions is that they rely on an established install base. Given that a good number of people who will buy and like DA:O will not be interested in an MP expansion and that there are a good number of folks who never bought the game because it lacks MP , I think it would be smarter for them to release a separate product.
The issue with adding in any multiplayer functionality to the main app is that it would take a huge amount of work; it would be far more cost effective to implement simpler multiplayer options to something web-based.

Also, I know for a fact that adding multiplayer is not as trivial to implement as many think. If it wasn't considered from the very beginning of development, many, many pieces of code and game design would have to be modified in the engine.

"Dragon age has great multiplayer!"
"Ohh I have to buy dragon age AND the expansion?"
"RARR"
"Ohh well it's good anyways :P"

Alot of the arguments brought up against multiplayer not being fun etc should consider the fact that NWN did have multiplayer and yes.. it was fun.
As for the possibility of it. Anything is possible when you're a AAA developer with time and money on the table.

The only reason it's asked so much is because this is a spiritual successor to a game that *did* have multiplayer. Not to mention it also follows a similar vein to the NWN series which had amazing multiplayer and a great toolset with *HEAPS* of online community content.

It may have been fun, but a miniscule percentage of game owners ever played it.

Dragon Age isn't Baldur's Gate and it isn't NWN.
There is zero chance of there being multiplayer in Dragon Age. Bioware has already stated outright that the game doesn't include such features.

Considering the fact that people still play it *and are playing it right now* I don't believe that at all.
Also the fact that Bioware have stated that there are no current features doesn't rule out the possibility of multiplayer in the future via DLC or Expansions.

For my part, I should have pointed out the "fun factor" is subjective, and only my opinion. And in that vein, I did not particularly think NWN multiplayer was all that fun. But again, just opinion.
As for the possibility, I would agree it is definately not impossible. But I question rather it is worth it, at least in the eyes of the game developers. Bioware would have to decide if the return would exceed the cost of development, which could be quite high if major parts of the engine had to be redone.
In the end, only time will tell. By so far, there has been no official indication, that I am aware of, of multiplayer coming to DA:O.

It also doesn't rule out the possibility of me winning the lottery, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

The intensity of the enjoyment of a small segment of the fanbase has no bearing on whether the feature enjoyed by that segment was enjoyed or even experienced by the majority. It also has no bearing on the size of the majority. The low multiplayer usage statistics are a fact; I'll search for a source and send it to you, if you wish.

Given the time and effort required to have a multiplayer aspect, they would have hyped it considerably and added it to the main game. It's not the sort of element you just slap on a finished game and give people for free.

This. Plus I'm not for an mmo. It would be nice to have the DM-based multiplayer of NWN as an option, though.

I was kind of banking on the whole "spiritual successor to NWN" thing pulling through for me.
Oh well, whether it has online or not I'm going to have fun posting my stats and stuff online.
