Basically, if I have the Mattock, should I even bother with the Revenant?  I never picked it as a bonus weapon since it seemed... kinda redundant.

Depends on your play style. Revenant works great with adrenaline rush, and has good damage and a huge thermal clip capacity. Mattock deals similar damage in my experience, but works even better with AR and deals more damage, at the cost of a low heat sink capacity. The mattock also initiates ammo effects like freezing in one shot.

Mattock is probably technically better, but it depends mainly on your playstyle.

Mattock is very powerful and very OP'd on Soldier so does make the choice for Widow easier, however the Revenant is still a fun weapon to use and the only reason why I play Soldier.

If you're looking for an easy time on Insanity you'll want the Mattock. I prefer the Revenant - just for the Rambo feel :)

Use whatever weapon you are most comfortable with, game is easy enough that it shouldn't be a problem. I prefer sniping so I go with widow, but if you enjoy the rambo feel of a revenant soldier go with it.

Mattock is fine until you can pick up the Relevant. If know how to aim it, it's great, more ammo on the target.

I'm a pretty lousy shot, so I'm Team Revenant. Mattock does wonders for my squadmates, though.

It is generally accepted the Mattock is out of balance, and for good reason. No weapon can compare with it in performance when utilized in a fashionable manner, least of all if combined with AR.
The question is, do people want to to play an insanely powerful (and therefore easy-mode) build ( especially: Mattock+Widow+Heightened AR=Godmode), or are they prone to accept the challenge to master a difficult weapon such as the Revenant? Anything else is comparision by data and has been done to great lenghts.

It depends on how you want to play your soldier.  As I've posted elsewhere, Soldier can be played MANY different ways.

I've played it both with and without the Revenant.  If I play my soldier as an "Infantryman" I keep the Mattock as my main weapon and get either the Widow or the Claymore.  If I play as a Soldier Sniper, I use the Mattock until I get the Widow which becomes my primary, with the Vindicator as a backup weapon.  If I play as a "Designated Marksman", I use the Mattock until I get the Viper SR, which becomes my primary.  Then I take the Revenant and use it for CQC or where ever the Viper isn't appropriate.

The Revenant is a beast in CQC compared to the Mattock, and it's awesome for suppressing fire.  So, it's not pointless if you play it a certain way.

With that said, the Widow is hard to turn down.  It's a badass rifle, very nice for putting Harbinger in his place......

Harbinger: ASSUMING DIRECT CONT---
Shepard: BLAM!

Hmm lets see...Mattock fires accurately, in semi auto mode and has very limited ammunition requiring you to make each shot count. Revenant on the other hand, has loads of ammo and encourages spray and pray gameplay. And that makes Mattock a noob weapon. Interesting<_<

the Mattock does crazy damage and I think (not sure, haven't done extensive testing) can actually have a faster firing rate than the Revenant, and I HAVE confirmed that Mattock has the potential to shoot faster than the Revenant since AR is NOT gonna slow down the Mattock's firing rate. The damage the Mattock can output more than offsets the lack of ammo.

I agree it has higher DPS, but that wasnt my point. I'm not sure how many pro gamers actually prefer inaccurate spray and pray weapons over pin point accurate ones.

EDIT: AR does slow down the fire rate of mattock for me. I fire Mattock at around 7-8 shots per second which is around 450 rpm. With heightened AR, the rate becomes 0.3*750=225 i.e half the fire rate. But Mattock does fire faster than Revenant, as Revenant has a fire rate of 700 rpm while Mattock has a potential of 750 rpm.

I have to admit... I passed on the Revenant even on my first playthrough. A gigantic sniapur rifle for my already OP soldier? Yes please. As everyone else has said it just depends on how you play but I usually love trashing my fire key and unleashing hell with the Mattock. Adding a decent ammo power and upgrades literally annihilates enemies by the end-game.

Couple that with the Widow and you can go for insta-kills with Adrenaline Rush. It's great and imo, I would recommend going for a Widow rather than Revnant. Mattock all the way for me ^^

The Claymore is another option instead of going with the Widow.

I definitely choose the Revenant. I like having a gun that can lay down a lot of hurt, really fast, and on multiple enemies. I also like the 80rnd. heat sink capacity.

Perfectly fine, since I'm a massive noob, anyway.

Okay, so far I'm seeing people reccommend the Revenant more for the feel than anything else.  I'll probably pick it up eventually, since I want to try it myself, but it looks like the Widow's a more popular specialization choice.

Or I could go Claymore.  For the lulz.

Revvy vs. Mattock is a playstyle issue IMHO.

If you like to get in the enemy's face with an unstoppable bullet hose then the Revvy might be perfect for you.

If you like to keep your distance and be more surgical in your application of force then Mattock + Widow sounds like a perfect combo. 1-shot-1-kill with the Widow plus massive Mattock + AR damage is someone gets close.

The Mattock is so good I consider it broken [but of course use it anyway]

Mattock's good, but annoying to use, as I find myself constantly running out of thermal clips.

If it's a question about power, the Mattock, when combined with Adrenaline Rush, wins by so much (even against Shields) it isn't funny. It is completely broken. The only advantage the Revenant has is clip size so you reload less. But it's not a serious weakness.
