GTA4's development was $100 million.

With all the actors and voice acting and just overall huge game, I'd say around that much.

I believe we can just leave it at the quote "It's over 9000!".

Funny, I was about to post that when I read the title. I'm not sure if the two can be compared like this though. They both belong to the best the industry has produced over the last few years, so yeah it is reasonable to assume that the costs were similar. Anyone from Bioware willing/allowed to comment on this?

After doing a bit of checking around the interwebz, I'ma guess it came in at around 50-75 million. I doubt it hit the 100 million mark of GTAIV, simply because GTA was a fracking HUGE game, far beyond the hugeness in ME2. More voice actors, more game world to explore, more... Just about everything.

SWTOR is said to be over $100 million but that's a fully voiced MMO (ignoring the ridiculous estimate from a famed Internet troll). I doubt ME is a quarter that figure.

I can't quite fathom just how Mass Effect is such a big franchise, really. I mean, what, the games each sold two million or so units?

That hardly constitutes all the books, comics, and even a bloody movie, really. It's a relatively small franchise, when you compare it to CoD, Halo, or even a game like Professor Layton. And yet somehow Mass Effect has more multi-media stuff than any of those franchises, with the exception of Halo which has been in existence for much longer.

I don't know. Maybe Bioware has a secret pot of gold somewhere. In a day and age where an AAA game has to sell a million to be even considered for a sequel, I do wonder why EA back Mass Effect so.

Mass Effect 1 sold around 3 million units, and Mass Effect 2 sold around 5+million units. Hell, it sold 2 million copies in the first week.

It's not a small franchise. It's not huge, but not small either. EA backs other games more than Mass Effect, so I don't know why you think they have THAT much support behind it...

Making a mass effect game : A big bunch o' sweet dough
Owning a copy of the game : Priceless

Modeling Miranda's ass alone must have requiered a dedicated team of engineers, artist modelers, quantum physicians and countless hours. Those people are expansive... but the Prize!

You underestimate the power of the dark side.

I mean the Bioware fan... Uh...

...

Since girls play this game too, I can't really say 'fanboys'... What's the proper gender-attribute here? Fanpeople? Fanpersons?

I think the $100 million price tag was for Red Dead Redemption.

There are no firm figues on what the budget for Mass Effect 2 actually was but I don't believe it came anywhere near the $100 million that GTA 4 and RDR cost to make.  The closest guesstimate I can find is that ME 2 probably cost around $40 million :-

website ........ A study by entertainment analyst group M2 Research also puts development costs for single-platform projects at an averge of $10 million. The figures themselves may not be too surprising, with high-profile games often breaking the $40 million barrier (think Modern Warfare 2, Gran Turismo 5, Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy XIII, etc.).

decently sized... Bioware rpg's have increasingly grown more reliant on outside talent for voice overs, music and technology, especially the Mass Effect franchise

whatever it is tho, Dragon Age Origins alone probably still cost more to make over its 5 year production cycle (and people wonder why they've streamlined the sequel?)
