 My specs are as follows:

AMD Phenom™ 9100e Quad-core processor ~1.8ghz
8192MB ram
Windows 7 professional
Nvidia Geforce 9600GT w/ the newest drivers.

I can play on the highest or the lowest settings of graphics, it makes no difference, it runs flawlessly except for at seemingly random times my fps drops to an unplayable amount. I say random because I can't make it occur when I choose. I can run through an area and be fine, then come back 20 minutes later and lag like no other. I've read a lot about Phenom processor issues but I always notice most of the fixes are involving a windows vista SP1 problem. I have windows 7 professional. Any information at all would be much appreciated.

Question: What mods do you have installed? I'm having the same issue and perhaps we can cross check what the issue is.

Also, since you are a Quad Core this thread:

Might help. I have a 6 Core, so I'm kind of SoL at the moment.

I'm having the same issue, but none of the same circumstances. Odd. Try the Core Affinity fix. That should help slow the memory leakage.

How is that done?

I'm not convinced it's a memory leak, or at least how I understand the term. DAO is a poorly-coded game. I think, rather, it's a calculation issue, compounded by higher graphics demands, either though in-game settings, driver settings, mods, or a combination thereof.

That said, the processor affinity trick seems to help some people. Essentially, you're telling the game to only run on, in Alucard's case, two of the four cores. There's a few posts about how to do this in the Solutions Round-up linked in my signature line.

For Alucard098... one other thing I would suggest is making sure your Nvidia card is set to "Let the 3D application decide" under 3D settings. Also, bear in mind that you're running a first generation Phenom at a relatively low clock speed... so you'll be running at a lower overal FPS than some other machines.

Regards,

RI

Slight update. For 6 Cores, Cores 2, 3, and 4 work the best. Disabling Shimmer and Persistent Gore made WORLDS difference, especially Persistent Gore. I just have to save every so often to make sure the problem doesn't get too bad, but it's running tons better with Core Affinity set to the proper cores and Gore/Shimmer disabled.

That makes sense.  Thanks for posting an update!

I think the bottom line is this... where with other games (like Mass Effect 2, I've found) you can build a high-end system and just bulldoze through any hiccups.  Dragon Age... not so much.  It's finicky, probably thanks to its proprietary engine.  I look forward to seeing how DA2 runs... if they've truly cleaned up the coding.  The demo had flaws, but I found it promising, at least using Dx9.

unfortunately, the affinity fix did nothing. Anyone have anything else?

Turn off Persistent Gore and Shimmer. Also, the Affinity 'solution' won't stop the problem, but lessen it's effect on your games. When you start to notice a bit of lag, save. That helps too.

Persistent Gore/Shimmer...located in the launcher menu?

The reason I ask rather than check myself is I'm not able to check at the moment.

Oh. No. It's located in the main game's options menu. Under Gameplay (the first tab). There are two boxes with checks in them by default. "Shimmer around loot items" and "Persistent Gore" Turn these off, and see if it helps. Just get used to using the TAB Key to find loot-able bodies/items. I kind of spam the TAB key anyway, so turning Shimmer off was a no-brainer.

Turn both off, see if that works. If it does work acceptably, do me a favor? Turn shimmer back on and see if it's JUST Persistent Gore that's the problem.

I have tried turning shimmer off before, did nothing. Never turned gore off though.

Alright, theoretically, if that doesn't work, Any thing else I could do?
I won't have access to the internet tomorrow(but I'll have access to DA, unlike now) so i'm just learning the possible problems, and I'll try them all.

Make sure that NVidia's control panel (or whatever NVidia devices use to control display settings) are set to use Application Preference, as well as turning down things like Anti-Aliasing's settings (even if the game isn't using it, it could be causing some weird issues), and finally, (or firstly) make sure Frame Buffer Effects and VSync are off. (VSync is optional, but unless you're having screen tear issues, it's not all that important).

Really, that's all I can think of suggesting. Besides saving as soon as you start to notice the lag. For some reason that really helps me when I do it. Also, play awhile (with Core Affinity set especially). I noticed that the game gets a bit BETTER the longer I play it now. Before it would reach the unplayable stage but saving as soon as the problem starts, setting core affinity, and turning off Persistent Gore seems to have helped my issues a lot. (I just played for basically 3-4 hours with almost no problems except load times started to get waaay long).

Just a quick update - I've tried the shimmering/persisten gore+affinity things, it seems a lot more tolerable...but I'm still getting lag here and there which doesn't seem to make sense since my system specs surpass the needed ones, or at least meet them. I play on medium texture/graphic detail but have tried low as well. Any other ideas?

The lag is part of the game, unfortunately. What I mean is that the game (specifically Patches 1.03 and 1.04) were badly coded and memory leaks occur. The lag is caused by those memory leaks and there is no way to remove them completely without Bioware releasing a better patch. Not even Modders can fix the problem (legally), as the problem is with the games engine and coding. Even I'm still having issues (I just Blue-Screened for example [Service_Exemption_Error]), but the lag is considerably less and the game is playable, even if you do have to save often.

If you're getting a BSOD on Windows 7, I've found the folks at this forum:

http://www.sevenforu...shes-debugging/

to be exceedingly helpful. Essentially you download a compiler that takes the Windows minidump reports and upload it with your post, and they'll analyze it for you. An example of my own recent experience while troubleshooting some SLI issues:

I agree - it is completely playable. Just wondering if it could be MORE playable =P. Little annoying that it ran just the same on my garbage single core 1gb 8400GS system as it does here. Hopefully DA2 will be better. Don't want a fallout3/new vegas scenario.
