My specs (I think it's complete)

--Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU
--E8500 @3.16GHz 3.34 GHz
--3.00 GB DDR3 RAM
--Vista 32-bit
--Service Pack 2
--Direct X 11
--NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT

The game does not crash - it freezes. You cannot alt-tab or ctrl-alt-delete out of it. Whatever you're on, the image locks and some of the models get lined with a bright color, usually blue or red. Usually the game freezes during the opening cutscene with the guy in the chair. One time I made it to the opening battle, then it did the same thing.

Have changed from High to Medium to Low specs with no progress. Have switched from DX11 to DX9 with no apparent affect. Windowed and non-windowed mode doesn't seem to matter.

Have never seen this problem with any PC game before.

Hmmm what type of video card, are your drivers up to date (even if they are, sometimes uninstalling drivers for updates leaves conflicts from older or previous installs... folders/files). MB drivers up to date? sounds more like an issue on your end.

Do you have Vsync on? That caused pauses for me in cut scenes so that could be causing your problems I guess. After turning it off I was able to play on high settings without diretx 11 off

Videocard is NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT

So far as I know all my drivers are up to date. Did the rounds yesterday. I'll check again.

Thanks for the responses so far, hoping I can figure this out.

Update: the 8800 hasn't had seriously updated drivers since 2009. I definitely have the most up to date ones.

What is Vsync? I didn't see that in the category managers.

HI, start the demo and before you launch into the game first go into Options/video and halfway down untick the box marked Vertical Sync and see if that works.

Hope it helps

Actually... the latest drivers for your card is only a month old.  Version 266.58:

You may also consider doing a full-on clean uninstall/install of the driver:

Raen, thanks so much for digging that up. I'd missed that update entirely. Installed, but...

However all the updates and turning off vsync appear to have done nothing. I've just had the game do the same freeze twice in a row on the Bioware load screen. That's the earliest it's happened. I did one on DX11 and one on DX9, to the same result. Getting worried because forced restarts aren't great for a computer, and now I'm over six on them.

Any other ideas?

Download and try the the "Heaven Benchmark v2.1" see how your card fairs with that on high settings. You seem to be having hardware issues more then software.

edit
do you get any audio looping when it goes down

Downloaded Heaven Benchmark. It paused after I ran the program, then my entire computer froze with the same coloring issues, simply affecting my desktop instead of a game. So it does seem like it's a bigger problem now.

Ran the original Dragon Age: Origins and that gave me the same freeze.

Clean-installed the drivers, so that shouldn't be the issue. Any ideas on what I can do?

Wompoo, I do get audio looping. It's the hum of a quarter-second or half-second of audio looping over and over.

I have loaded new graphics drivers, I have downloaded and installed the DX redistro, I have a Windows 7 x64, I have set the permissions to run as Admin, I have also set all video to lowest, set all audio to disable, set online upload content etc to not so, I have set the disable to multiple render, aspect-ratio, and intro movies. I also set the DX to 9.
Even after all this I will get an error box with DA2's name in the upper left corner and the interior says "The application was unable to start correctly ( 0xc000007b ). Click ok to close the application."
I then proceeded to put the compatibility level down further and still got the same error, until I got to Windows 98/Me, which finally did not display the error message but, got to the stage of reopening the config utility saying first time running etc. , and then proceeded to pop up a box saying the config utility has stopped working and Windows will close the program and notify if a solution is available.

The system only freezes when putting the system at load (ie: running a game or a graphics intensive software) right? And the audio looping occurs and continues when its locked up?

Like Wompoo, I suspect this is a hardware issue, for I have seen this happen on one of my machines (unfortunately, that one was a laptop). If your on a desktop, the problem shouldn't be unresolvable, but it may require you to swap some hardware.

Things you might consider doing:
-Check the temperatures on your video card and look up the specifications on your card to make sure it is within limits. If it is not, try cleaning out the card.
-If you have a secondary, or older video card, try swapping that in place of your GeForce 8800 GT to see if the problem persists. If not, which is more probable, then there is likely an issue with your video card. If so, then there is something else going on, which one can hope isn't the case.

The thing with graphics cards and games like these is the temperatures that the chips can produce. Every time I load a game, the card heats up, and every time I quit a game, the card cools down. This causes stress on some of the components on the graphics board itself. Enough cycles of heat ups and cool downs can result in cracking of the solder on the board, which leads to symptoms described above. If such problems still occur from driver swapping, then it is likely this is the case.

There is but one way to repair a video card that is suffering from heat/stress damage (assuming that this is the problem), and it involves a little heat treatment through baking it in an oven (seriously). Due to the intricacies of most cards, I can honestly admit that I would never have the guts to perform such a procedure, though there are a lot of positive reports out there of users who have had success doing this.

Hopefully that isn't the problem though, but if it is, you might want to consider a new video card. But first off, check your temperatures, maybe clean off some dust in your computer, and see if the problem goes away.

MingWolf, thank you very much for the comprehensive response. After going through everything it looks like my GT card simply gave out. I don't know what caused it to go, but it's almost certainly busted and not an issue with the demo.

Thanks to everyone who helped me figure this out. Never seen so many helpful answers to one of my tech problems.
