My friend and I bought nwn2 on steam and are able to connect to each other and play via Hamachi but it is either unplayable because of lag or because we're simply out of sync (I'll load a new area waiting for him to load and he's stuck in the old one).
Unless there's an easier solution I'd rather just rent a dedicated server for as long as we're playing the game so we don't have to worry about connection issues, but the only option I've found (http://artofwarcentr...WN2-servers.asp) is $29/month, which seems pretty outrageous. Are there any other choices?

We ran Sea of Dragons with Art of War Central for awhile as it was the cheapest option we could find at the time. One of the admins now hosts it himself (much cheaper). Since you seem to have trouble hosting it yourself, then AoWC is likely the best you can find. That's not good news, I know. Hopefully you can get it working hosting it yourself though.
Feel free to try out a persistent world if you ever want something besides the main game for multiplayer.

Have you tried connecting without Hamachi? What happens? Also, I assume you're running this as a normal MP game (which I recommend if you're just playing the official campaign or a normal module with the host machine also serving as one of the player clients) and not through the server console. What are the specs of the host machine?
Otherwise, AOWC is about as cheap as you're going to find.

Turns out my connection was just acting up in general tonight, I tried playing something else and was having pretty bad packet loss so we'll probably try again tomorrow night. I didn't think the game's netcode would be so bad as for us to be out of sync when I have a 20Mb/2Mb connection
But just in case, specs:
Phenom II X4 955 Black @ 3.3ghz
4 gigs ram
geforce gtx 285 2GB
plenty for this oldish game for sure
Without Hamachi he can see my server in internet games and also if he direct connects to my external IP, but it times out when connecting, even with the right ports forward and even with DMZ turned on.
It's the same with every other game we've played though and I think it just has to do with how the internet's routed in my apartment complex.
Thanks for the replies, I'm hoping the issue was just my connection tonight, wouldn't want to have to spend another $30 on top of the $20 we each paid to play the game properly O_o

If your net is 20mb/2mb, you should have no problem.
What is hamachi exactly?

Hamachi is an application that creates a virtual network between two computers that aren't actually networked. It's commonly used to host online games because it's easier to detect LAN servers many times than external ones.
