And you can turn the difficulty up if you want.

It's a pain when they perma-die because they were reduced to -10
And BG2 was great, BG1 was total ****
You start off at level 1 and one wolf in the first area kills half your party and you have no revive. -.-

Attaching things to toggles is great, but if someone flips that on and doesn't know that it will suddenly make their "Easy" game not quite so Easy anymore... well, that wouldn't be good.
I'm not interested in calling anybody stupid. It's a videogame -- maybe you're a genius but you just want to relax after work and you don't want to have to pay much attention in order to beat the game. Maybe you're a small child.
But yeah, that was a depressing post to read.
Are they really making the judgment that the group of players who would successfully navigate an options menu once but then forget how to do so a second time is a larger group -- and one they're more interested in attracting -- than those who would appreciate and enjoy flexibility in customizing their own playstyle?

P.S. All friendly fire accomplishes (for the average person) is forcing them to take AoE spells that only effect enemies.
Then thank you for confirming at least that the average person is a drooling moron.

What? He said he boycotted the game until they implement friendly fire toggle. I didn't miss any point.

Also I would like to request the rest of the community to join me in boycotting purchasing the game until such point that a Freindly Fire toggle is implemented. I really do feel quite depressed that the devs view me, and the rest of the world as too stupid to make this decision ourselves.
Regards,
Concerned Fan
Oh and this is just ridiculous... do you seriously expect people to do this?
If I said I hated the shield that Bethany uses in the first scene of the game, and wanted everyone here to boycott, I'd be laughed out of the forums..
Yes. Because an issue which does not only concern the internal consitency of the world of Dragon Age, but also the entire way you play in combat is comperable to the design graphic of a shield on a companion character.
This is acctually a huge issue. Magic in a fantasy world needs to have rules, and they need to be internally consistent. If they are not, anything can happen. And that means that there is no consequnces and no tension in the story. If magic have no rules an limits, why is it not used to solve every problem?
Friendly fire increase the internal realism of the world we are playing in. For a story to have impact, it must feel real on it's own terms. Everything that helps with this is a huge asset.
Not only this, but friendly fire profondly alters the way combat works. It alters difficulty, I agree, but in a way that does not include ramping up the HP and damage of every lowly peon you meet (which also hurts internal consitency of the world. Why are your characters the only ones with measly HP, are they ill or something?).
Friendly fire should be an option, at the very least, for hard difficulty. Hard is normally the most "equal" difficulty in terms of damage and HP between characters and enemies, so that it is possible to play tactically without becoming gamey and sacrificing character development for gameplay (i.e. always min/maxing. the party).

They are not real gamers in thy eyes.
I agree with OP that the only realistic mode is Nightmare since Irl your party would take the full damage of a spell.

Yes, it could, but some of us don't select difficulty levels for difficulty.Maconbar wrote...
Adding a FF toggle to lower levels of difficulty could result in Normal + FF being harder than Hard + FF because of how glancing blows are calculated.

That's great but can you see why BW wouldn't want to officially publish a feature whereby Easy was harder than Hard?

I can't say the tactical factor is of the same strength as it was in Origins, and for a simple reason really - friendly fire. It's only present on Nightmare now, and based on the demo, I'm starting to think Nightmare might just be Hard with FF turned on.
I just don't think it was a good compromise to remove FF from lower difficulties in order to make the game easier. I admit, Nightmare in Origins doesn't seem that hard to me anymore (for several rather obvious reason), but I doubt I would have been able to survives some of the battles in the demo if FF had been turned on.
To me, this is far from ideal. Fireball, for example, was a feared and powerful spell - setting enemies on fire, knocking them down... Now it's lame and mundane, you shoot one in the middle of your party and only the enemy get fried. Not to mention Firestorm...
I think I would have rather taken Easy with FF turned than ANY other thing at all.
It's a shame, really, most things I've seen in the demo impressed me, especially the rogue (fast and nimble *finally*), and it seemed like there was much potential for even greater tactical combat... alas... I'll have to do without FF. At least for the first playthrough. Nightmare might not be fun the first time around, but I believe, based on previous experiences, that the game would be more boring without FF on subsequent playthroughs.
Oh, dear devs, oh, please have mercy on us PC gamers, please, oh, please find it in your schedules to release an upgrade for the ToolSet. Continue the legacy, leave no stone unturned, replace thy dead pet, re-oil thine engine, casteth thee shadow on thy... floor?

It's an idiotic reason to boycott a game because in three weeks there will be a mod that lets you toggle it.
Seems like a very reasonable reason to me. Especially since the problem is might get fixed. Not so much a boicott as a discerning attitude, waiting to see if the problem can and will be fixed before buying a product he is not satisifed with.
If he can rally some others to his cause, even better, as an official Bioware patch would be preferable to a mod (that might or might not appear).
