Why I probably won't buy DLC for DA2

I originally posted this on the Origins forum, but I believe it is related to DA2 as well, since I imagine the release plans for DLC and future editions are similar.

Like many people I suppose, most people perhaps, I bought Dragon Age Origins pretty much when it was new, which means at its highest price (49.99 €). Which is normal. I also got two free pieces of DLC (Stone Prisoner and Blood Dragon Armor) for buying it on Steam. Again, fair deal.

A while back, Bioware released the Dragon Age Origins ultimate edition, which also costs 49.99 € but contains every other DLC and the expansion. I would have liked to play all this content (and still would), but buying the whole package when I already have the biggest portion of it seems like a waste. Then again, if I buy the content I'm  missing separately (= 29 € worth of DLC + the 20 € expansion), the price is the same, 49 €.

That means whatever happens, I get my "114 $ worth of content" for... 98 € (= 135 $ !!).

Now, here is my question : how come the people who bought the game before everyone else, and therefore, probably allowed for the release of the Ultimate edition in the first place, still have to pay their DLC full price, while a cheaper edition is now available for those who skipped on the game ? Wouldn't it be logical for DLC prices to go down as well by now ? Seems to me it would be fair at least. Why priviledge the skeptical over the fans ?

If I get Dragon Age 2 new (and I probably will), I pay more than the people who will buy it in a year. It is normal since in a year, the game won't be "the new $#!t" anymore. However, the DLC will still be as expensive, while people who waited long enough to get the ultimate edition or whatever the new package will be called will also get the DLC for cheaper. Isn't that somewhat unfair ?

The skeptical need convincing, the fans do not.

You made your choice.

An interesting point. Games go down in price after periods of time, even if "ultimate" editions are never made. I see no reason why DLC prices should drop accordingly. however, i'm far too impatient to wait around for price drops on stuff, so i'm unaffected either way. *shrug*

No. Is it unfair that movies that came out a year ago are now on the discount rack at Walmart, and Winter clothes are now on sale at department stores? If you buy something new it costs more. Don't look at it that people are getting all the DLC for free. It is more realistic to look at it as them getting the main game at a discount because it is no longer new. You can wait and get anything for less. In 2 or 3 years the ultimate edition of Origins could be had for $9.99. The year of my life that I won't have Dragon Age 2 is worth less to me than having Dragon Age 2 for that year so I am getting it right when it comes out.

By extension of this reasoning, do you feel that you deserve a refund when the price of the regular game drops by $20? Because you were there early and supported them right away? It's unfair that a supporting fan should have to pay more than someone who waited until six months after release to buy it... right?

It's not about fair. It's business. The game sales are down, so they package up an Ultimate Edition to squeeze a few more customers out of what they've already produced.

But isnt that exactly what he is saying? Everything drops in price, why doesn't the dlc?
It's a fair point really, if the games get their prices lowered after a while why doesn't dlc?

Then again, most dlc are cheap and most of the time well worth the money so I don't really care, but still, it's a fair point.

My problem is not with the main game's price going down after some time, it is with the DLC price not going down. For people who buy the game later to get a discount is perfectly legitimate. For them to get a discount on DLC as well is absurd.

you can buy unpopular old games for the price of some DLC.
I think I saw shining force going for 2.99 on steam.

It would seem that some of you did not read the whole post or did not comprehend the point.

The OP is not requesting free DLC or complaining about the price of DA2 DLC right now. OP wants to know why the price DLC is not discounted after quite some time has passed since its release.

It's completely sensible reasoning, no need to hate.

I bought DA:O when it was next on the PS3 then traded it in for the 'Ultimate Edition' when that came out. Buying a hard copy of the game can save money in the long run. ;)

i don't think there is any logic when a price fall.
What i mean?
Let us go to an other Game: Overlord.
The Overlord Game costs 7,99€ on Amazon, at Gamerunlimited it costs 19,99€
"The Expansion" can't be bought on Amazon but you can Buy Overlord + Raising Hell for 19,99€
On Gamerunlimited you have to buy it seperately for 9,99€.
And there is an complete Edition (Ultimate Edition) with Overlord + Raising Hell for 29,99€
And when you buy it on Gamerunlimited you Got an Direct 2 Drive Product that should be cheaper than the Retail.
That makes no Sense but it is so.

When i want to buy an DLC i think about how much i need/whant that.
I don't buy every s#%t that's released, only Contentupdates that might be worth it and then i don't want to play them after a year or something i want to play them now.
So i'm fine with the price i have to pay.

Because the first 6 months sales are the most important for publishers. Those Ultimate editions and whatnot are made for people who weren't interested in the game, NOT FOR THE FANS! I can't believe people bi*tch about stuff like that. If you are so upset by that then JUST WAIT A YEAR AND BUY THE GotY EDITONS!

The Ultimate Edition contains DLC I would not want to support with my money tho. So in the end I'd rather have the things I really want the moment I want them and give feedback on things I don't like by not buying them.

That was an excellently written and well thought out arguement.
I agree.
(I'll still buy the DLC when it comes out though.)

You have to see a doctor about that. That's not healthy. Really.

The OP has a point. He is just wondering how that works. Why you have to be aggressive about that is beyond me, though.

DLCs are CHEAP! Also they go on sales from time to time. ME2 DLCs anyone? This thread is stupid.

It bothers me that games on STEAM go for really low prices ($10-$20) after sometime, usually less than a year.

Because Steam is a digital retailer. LOL!
