DLC prices should go down until they become free after the game has run its course.

Because the first 6 months sales are the most important for publishers. Those Ultimate editions and whatnot are made for people who weren't interested in the game, NOT FOR THE FANS! I can't believe people bi*tch about stuff like that. If you are so upset by that then JUST WAIT A YEAR AND BUY THE GotY EDITONS!

People like you make me wanna vomit.

Did you even read his post?

OP's main point: Why don't DLCs drop in price over time like games do?

your response: completed misaimed needlesly hostile rant. Calm down, reset your troll detector, and try that again.

DLCs are CHEAP! Also they go on sales from time to time. ME2 DLCs anyone? This thread is stupid.

Still not the point though. If I get a better computer in say, 2 and a half years, and decide to nostalgia buy DA2 to try it out on a PC, and i buy it used for, say....$15. if i want the exiled prince DLC, that now costs half as much as the entire game, even though it's 2.5 years later. i'm not disagreeing with you that DLC is, for the most part, cheap. but why should it not be sold at reduced value later on (which could, in fact, result in more long term purchases of that DLC) when just about every other type of merchandise is sold for lower prices once it is no longer "new"?

Because Steam is a digital retailer. LOL!

They have unlimited stock of those items.
And they can only be played using steam.
Too bad civ 5 and Cod black ops is on steam....I seriously hate that.

Exactly the point I wanted to make, if they believe in drawing in people who were skeptical about the game, why not draw in people who were skeptical about the DLC ? Sounds like just as valid a commercial decision.

In 2.5 years you will be able to buy the DA2 Ultimate Edition for $5-$7.5 on Steam... Still don't see why you people are upset that DLCs don't get cheaper with time. Even if DLCs dropped to $1 per DLC you will still be better off BUYING THE ULTIMATE EDITION!

Don't they violate some kind of competition law? Not that I'm losing sleep over it but seeing the entire King's Bounty franchise go for $9.99, albeit only for a few days, makes me feel cheated, .

In fact, they don't HAVE to get cheaper with time. The fact is they DO but only for people who get the ultimate edition. As far as I'm concerned, I'm not particularly "upset", I'm just sharing this interrogation of mine because it's the Bioware social network, whose function I believe is to allow customers to communicate with each other and with Bioware. You're the one who seems upset about that.

I am not going to buy the DLC.

Why? Stupid Bioware Points website is broken and won't let me get past the "Payment" option, not even with PayPal. It's been months now according to the support topic.

DLC price should go down and perhaps there should be a special offer after a while to do a pack of all the dlc in the ultimate edition.

For the amount of content they provide, they're not.  Though I suppose with us getting less main game for our money, their prices are less out of line than they used to be.

It's a fair point really, if the games get their prices lowered after a while why doesn't dlc?

Then again, most dlc are cheap and most of the time well worth the money so I don't really care, but still, it's a fair point.

DLCs are cheap? Really? For DA:O you spent 1 dollar for 1 hour of playtime. For most DLCs you pay 2-3 dollars per hour. Basically you are agreeing with the publisher that charging 100-150 dollars for the full game would be OK.

I will be buying the DLCs that I'm interested in. For me there is only a handful of games each year that I enjoy to play and the DA franchise is on top of that list. I want them to succeed and I want them to continue to invest in the DA universe.

That said I'm only interested in DLCs that enhance the story and at this point only the Lost Prince (i.e extra companion) fills that role. I'm sure other DLCs will come along that I will buy but they will have to be better then DA:O Witch Hunt or I will quickly loose interest.

You make it sound like a much better deal than it is. Don't forget all the DLC content (except Shale, which wasn't really DLC) was half-baked. Plus they had the gall to put salesmen for the DLC inside our games without our permission.

Whether or not I buy the DLC for DAII depends entirely on how interested I am in playing it more.

With DAO, I stopped playing during my second playthrough, because... well, I guess playing Mage bored me. So I didn't buy any DLC, since I wasn't feeling like playing the game anyway. In the end I got myself a fresh copy of the Ultimate Edition at €25 (Play.com = awesome), and gave my original copy to a friend.

With ME2, on the other hand, the game kept on appealing to me even after my second playthrough, so I got a few early DLCs, and then filled up on the rest of the significant (and a few less significant) ones when Lair of the Shadow Broker had been released.

I think I got fairly good deals. Especially with my home nation's strong currency these days, as both DLC and DAO Ultimate Edition ended up being quite cheap.

Good points. Funny in that you and I had the opposite reaction. I haven't bought any DLCs for the ME series (I think) while I have played all but the Golem one for DA.

For me space operas and the tale of shepherd is not as engaging/deep as DA:O. That said the action in ME is smoother and more fun (as an action game). I played DA:O on Normal as I mostly wanted the fights over with :-)

Exactly! The first few months = everything is sold at it's maximum value. After that, the price dropping game begin.Of course, the value of the game decline far faster than DLC.For the developer/publisher,DLC is a great way to make a profit since most of the money is going directly in their pocket versus the retail model.

An ultimate/game of the year edition is just to make extra profit on those who weren't convinced in order to possibly grow your fanbase. :)

I bought the Mass effect 2 DLC since I'm a fan and also jumped on the holiday deal to get it cheap.Once Bioware release the last bit of DLC,I expect to see a ultimate edition of ME2.

It would seem that some of you did not read the whole post or did not comprehend the point.

The OP is not requesting free DLC or complaining about the price of DA2 DLC right now. OP wants to know why the price DLC is not discounted after quite some time has passed since its release.

It's completely sensible reasoning, no need to hate.

Very well. Polite response:

They do. Various distributors lower the price of their DLC in various deals over time. Others may choose to purchase the "Ultimate" type editions.

Also, another logic train is that the main reason prices go down at stores is because they ultimately are trying to sell space. Retailers want to sell these old items people aren't buying so they can sell the new shiny items, such as the case may be.

Its part of basic economics, in order to get people to buy them (and subsequently get more shelf space) they reduce prices to increase demand; there is no shelving issue with DLC, incentives are not deemed as vital because they are, in a sense, eternal. They can have as much DLC available as they want without lowering the price because they don't need to make room for new releases.

End of Line

To be fair, the Mass effect 2 DLC is of higher quality compared to what the Dragon age team offered.  :P  It got much better reviews and the level of polish can't be compared in any shape or form. The best gameplay section of Mass effect 2 is not even in the main game, but in it's DLC.

I also want the game and its DLC as soon as it comes out and to me the cost of games and DLC aren't a major concern. I find it a cheap hobby in general (as I justify a new computer every 3-5 years for "other" reasons) and I only buy a handful of games (nowadays).

If I bought a lot of games then I wouldn't buy DLCs for 90% of them as I found 90% of games to fall somewhere between boring and okish.

Nowadays I tend to buy fewer games but do use the DLCs to enhance them. I find this more enjoyable.
