I understand what you mean man, but it would really be a kick in the quad if we go through the whole game and suddenly find out we made the wrong choice.

There should be multiple ways to defeat the Reapers. The base is only one of them. There are no "wrong" choices. Just alternate solutions to the same problem.

You honestly think those who destroy the base are going to automatically lose?

No, Im not saying that. Im saying that destroying it is incredibly foolish and naive. It may be the moral thing to do, but canocally, it should be the correct thing to do.

Correct and morally correct aren't the same thing.

Sorry but I will disagree with you. We have only speculation driving our arguments about the capabilities of the galaxy with or without the Collector base's resources, not any solid evidence, especially on tools that can be used against the Reapers, so despite what anyone says, the situation's still kind of a toss up. Bioware will most likely give players varying ways to combat the Reapers, not just fan service. Also, if it were made to be the "canonical" option, it would further degrade the purpose of having a character make such a crucial decision, especially since it'd be like retconning the actions of the character the player is controlling. Life - especially warfare- is alot like Calculus, in that there are often many solutions to a problem, depending upon the variables and resources available.

I hope Bioware's writers caught that message before they finished the story, or this game could become a very polarizing experience.

The argument that we don't know much about the base or its capabilities is an argument in favor of keeping it, not destroying.

Yes, Shepard summons Captain Planet, the Shepard who has strip mined countless planets to upgrade his guns, abilities, and ships. I don't think Captain Planet would be on our side.

No, it's on a basis that neither an argument for or against can justifiably be made. It's all speculation built on what currently is available, which at the time, isn't more than a few cutscenes and allusions hinted in the game ending. Hence, personal opinion is the greatest factor in the choices of those who choose to keep it or destroy it.

-Sneak Peak-
-Scientist meeting with TIM-
Scientist: Sir, we have concluded the study of the Reaper blueprints for weaknesses.
TIM: and?
Scientist: They have no weaknesses sir. Anything that seemed like a weakness at first glance seemed to be a great strength, like whoever designed them built it in as a trap.
TIM: What about the technology?
Scientist: given the fact that Commander Shepard took the base with the help of a squad of twelve quirky misfits and Normandy pretty much one-shotted the collector ship with the Turian guns, we don't have any armor advantage to be gained. The only tech we thought was new was the door locking system, then one of the team members said they had better locks at BAaT.
TIM: What about the seeker swarms?
Scientist: The Salarians already replicated them from Specialist Solus' data that he compiled from Freedom's Progress.
TIM: What about the shields?
Scientist:From what data we could get from the computer, it seems another factory produces the outershell and shields.
TIM: Do you know where it is?
Scientist: No sir, a massive explosion destroyed most of the computers when the radiation pulse was unleashed, we could get all we could.
TIM: Kai Leng?
Kai Leng: -syeps into image- yes sir?
TIM: clean up the project, say they went rogue and mutter some anti alien comments whenever you talk.
Kai Leng: yes sir, goddamn krogan fracking asair wh0res

You have that right. If it were realistic, all of you would be pleading the "machine gods" to spare you. But BW likes to make everyone a winner. That's not how a choice based RPG is done. Some choices should get you killed, others would get *others* killed and there are some that *should* get the galaxy blown up.

If ME was being realistic, "renegade" players would be waking up from the Lazarus Project to find humanity decimated, after every other race decided they weren't going to put up with humans bossing everyone around after taking over the Council.  One of the dumbest outcomes in the games imo, but thats for a different thread.  My point being that obviously Bioware isn't going to limit players to whether or not they kept the base stopping them from winning because... it's just a game.

But even without metagaming, the decision to keep or destroy the base is certainly one of the most interesting choices in the ME games, as it isn't really a choice between good and evil.  More of a choice between whether or not you trust the Illusive Man with such advanced technology.  It would have been a nice option to hand over the Base to someone a bit more trust-worthy.

OMG if Cerberus ends up creating a Pony-reaper then I'm going right back to keep the Base in all of my playthroughs.

You wish, Paragon-boy. If this game were realistic you wouldn't wake up from the Lazarus Project at all because there wouldn't be one. You'd have failed to destroy Sovereign at the battle of the Citadel because you wasted precious reinforcements saving the Destiny Ascension. The relay was opened and the Reapers won.

Good job!

If it was realistic there would not be smoking hot psychic alien babes, or ancient machines, or a workng VI on Illos, or the Thorian, or floating Hanar. Let us not dive into the realism debate.

There were plenty of ships; Soverign would have been taken down  anyway (as he was) and anyway, he was still half-controlling Saren at that point.  He may be strong but even a Reaper wasn't going to hold out forever against those odds.  I wouldn't even call saving the Council necessarily the right move (idk where you got that idea), but the alternative is terrible.  Believing that the 3 former Council races as well as every other race in the galaxy is just going to submit to a Human-led Council for two years is one of the biggest stretches in ME.

Derp. If that is your response then your accusations that the Alliance takeover of the Citadel is unrealistic is similarly baseless.

Why is that?  When Sovereign first arrived he had a large amount of Geth ships to take fire instead of him and to deal with the ships defending the Citadel as well as the Ascension.  Remember a lot of ships were sent to block the mass relays.  By the time a large portion of the Alliance ships arrived, Soverign was controlling Saren, trying to open the Citadel relay (which was always vague: I never understood exactly what he was doing but anyway) and firin' his lasers.  It was only a matter of time until he fell, especially since he was apparently really weakened after he lost Saren.

Believe it or not, the first time I played through I told the fleet to focus on Sovereign, not exactly sure what would happen to the Council.  I would've been fine with the results... except for when my Shepard acted as if it was all apart of his evil plan for galactic domination and was completely ooc... so I had to reload lol.

That's an entirely different debate. You want to invent reasons why it wasn't necessary to focus on Sovereign? Then I can invent reasons why the aliens don't kick humanity out of the Citadel.
