I don't see it.
It's true that with the extended cut they actualy changed some perspective, however I cannot see a ME4 without the reapers nor Shepard. All good stories need an hero and an archenemy. We just lost both so I don't think ME4 could start where ME3 ends unless Bioware tries some plot twist.
ME4 could only cover some minor aspect in parallel with the original story but I'm not interested in it, I'd rather would part of the main arch.
So for me ME is over, I will deal with it.

If bioware is smart they will not make ME4 and looking at their history they won't. Bioware is not known for making long and never ending sequels, when ME was announced they stated it specifically it will be a trilogy, so here we have it. An epic trilogy with lots of memorable moments and a good finisher (despite what most ppl think).
Ofcourse they can introduce a new hero and a new enemy in the ME universe but it would take very careful thinking and planning to make it work, they can easily ruin the whole ME franchise name with a wrong move (ahem DA2?). I say let the ship sail, bioware can do wonders and i am looking forward for a fresh and equally or even better RPG from them in the future.

Not to mention, now that they've ended the entire thing, trying to pump out something that trumps even ME3 will be complicated. Unless...

Mass Effect: Civ Builder, anyone?

ME 3 left a couple openings that could continue the story into ME 4. I could only imagine a good story that would follow. But overall the trilogy was excellent. Maybe ME 3 was kind of short regarding gameplay length. Just my opinion:)

I don't think ME4 could be set after the events of ME3 at all. There are just way too many things to take into account for Bioware to do this.

For instance, if you chose the Synthesis ending, you'd have an entirely different universe compared to what you'd have if you chose Destroy. Therefore, ME4 would have to be a prequel.

A new Mass Effect also shouldn't tangle up with the story of previous ME games. It should have an unique stand-alone story, which focuses on entirely different things than the Reapers.

The First Contact War has been an suggested setting, but I think it's too limited. It wouldn't involve very much space travel and aliens, seen as the focus lies in our solar system and on the turians. I think a good setting would be during the time when humans first joined the galactic community. Potentially, ME4 could be set in the Skyllian Verge, which was a very unstable zone at the suggested time.

Themes of the game could be tention between humans and batarians, raiders and pirates in the Skyllian Verge, Cerberus, or maybe something even bigger. Who knows what Bioware can cook up? They're creative minds, and I doubt the Mass Effect-universe ends with ME3.

EDIT: Spelling

For me, Mass Effect is Commander Shepard. Any game would have to feature that character, but to be honest after having finished a play-through with the extended ending, I hope this is the last we see of Mass Effect. It's just a pity it ended so poorly.

I have to disagree on that. While I like Commander Shepard as a character, it's the Mass Effect-universe that captivated me and made me become a huge fan of the series. There are many things that are yet to be explored, so it would be a pity if Bioware didn't expand upon the already deep universe they have created with more games.

However, I really feel that they have undermined themselves somewhat with the ME3 ending. Don't get me wrong, I have accepted the ending for what it is, and I appreciate the closure given from the Extended Cut. But, I just don't see how Bioware can make more games set after the events of ME3. If they were to make a new Mass Effect game, it would have to be a prequel.

Maybe they can make a story about one of shepards squadmates, that happened before or after shepards time period

in Mass Effect 4, I think they could make a story about people strugling to comunicate, commercialize and survive after the events in ME 3...
Something in the line "man is wolf to man" but in an universal dimension. Only references to Shepard, now a legend, cause he/she was not only the saviour of the universe but the catalyst for a new order, for a new and more brutal universe. But Mass Effect 4 would have a lot or romance too, cause love is strength. Something like that. Image IPB

I mean: I don't think Mass Effect's 3 ending prevents a Mass Effect 4 or an entire new trilogy using that universe we all love. Just focus on the struggle of human beings and the other species to comunicate, commercialize and survive now that... you know... now THAT happened in the end of ME 3. I think it's material enough for a hell of a GOOD NEW STORY.

They could always set ME4 in another galaxy, one not the Milky Way. One where it is discovered there are other Mass Effect Drives and biotics. It could be the Sleeping Galaxy, where the Reapers went when not infesting our own. That would allow them to run wild with a new trilogy plot without having to worry about designing three separate worlds based o0n people choosing either Synthesis or Destroy. Of course they could also just say Synthesis only lasted X number of years before things reverted back, blah blah.

As the child asks, in the last moments of the game, his grandfather for "one more Shepard story", there obviously is the possibility of another ME game featuring Shepard. One can only hope.

Should he return, I would love to see a Liara-Shepard romance reunion (if she was the love interest through the previous games, DLC etc). I would not love to see yet another bleeping MMORG, but considering how closely connected ME is to the Xbox, hopefully I'll be spared from it.

There might be an attempt at ME4 or some other ME thing -- after all, EA never met IP it didn't want to suck the life out of like a vampire hooker.

But they've proven it will stink.

Guess which 5-letter word for "prostitute" is censored... I wonder why EAware would censor that word on their forums...

Sad, true moment... noticed the stars on my way home tonight, made me think of ME1... wanted to play it again for a moment.  Then I remembered where ME3 takes the story, where takes Shepard and every other character.

How about this...
It's set after ME3, and all character templates vary depending on what the ending of your ME3 was.
Quarians/Geth either survived or die out for some reason (Plague etc. although the geth just dissappearing somewhere would make a great plot line). or there could be a lost colony, but yeah.

Reapers have repaired lots of stuff and are now stationary 'libraries' of information that the galaxy use in tandem with the relays as an information source. If they were destroyed, Reaper like creations were made by the races of the galaxy because the reapers were so powerful in the last great war.

If Synthesis was chosen, the game reverses that with the prologue, where another great hero (not Shepard, but it could be someone else in the series) is forced to reverse it to prevent everything dying from a DNA specific plague (this could be what kills the quarians and geth).

'The Shepard' lives on in legend, and the protagonist is a human (though other races can be unlocked), either a synthesised person who was immune to the virus, or a test subject who was created like that. classes are similar, but along with Tech, Biotic and Combat, Chemicals are also added (Chemics?).
The first plot (it's a trilogy) could be about a massive single machine (related to reapers?) created during the 'perfect years' (if synthesis) or 'rebuilding years' if otherwise, that goes rogue and contaminates alot of robots in the galaxy (AI's are now a lot more common). It basically pulls a Sovereign, but tries to mimic the reapers and starts making a new race (Alpha's) which are part human part robot creatures. Character makes a team, goes to a different galaxy fringe, and pulls a suicide mission on them Boyakasha.

Time dilation tech could be put in as well (very weird, like the beacons in ME. Rare, but open new discoveries), and this would allow characters from Dragon Age to be pulled into the ME universe (but it wouldn't be the past, its from the future, as a masssive final battle in No. 3 reveals this 'low tech' magic world to be in the future, as an evolution of biotics)

Oh yeah, and if you chose Destroy with a High EMS, you encounter Shepard at some point (Not openly said to be him, though). Some DLC could be that you recruit him for a final mission or something, and other DLC could be on expanding on the Geth/Quarian dissappearance...

Man, I've thought about this too long...and I've got a massive document about all of this.
It's a story I've written which could be adapted to the ME universe quite well...

I don't know. I definitely want to see more out the Mass Effect universe but I don't want it to be forced or diminish the story before or after it. I think it would be tricky to do without Shephard, especially since you can't bring person back to life not once but twice (unless you had high EMS). I don't know, if one does come out, I'll definitely be excited for it, I'm just not sure how it will compare.

I would like to see a Mass Effect game that would be about Aria. I know that would be a lot of thinking for EA/Bioware so it won't happen. But if they do another Mass Effect game then will the ending of that game make people happy? I think they need to bring back that writer that they fired before.

I think a new trilogy that takes the player back to Prothean War with the Reapers would be amazing. Kind of like they did with Star Wars, you sort of know what happened but not really. Seeing the Reapers from a purely Prothean perspective would be really interesting, especially since they found Javik on Edin Prime and we caught a glimpse of what really happened.

I really hope there is a continuance of the Mass Effect Universe,  I quit gaming for years, then I saw mass effect and bought a console, and been back into gaming hardcore all due to this great setup, I love mass effect universe, if I have to lose shepard so be it but let the universe continue to grow and tell us wonderful stories for time to come! Plus with this new multiplayer aspect I think its great, I am not a multiplayer fan but for mass effect I am, and if they could add multiplayer campaign story mode, even better! But whatever they do dont let the mass effect universe die at number 3!!

They could make mass effect 4 with shepard (if you get the breath scene in ME3) After shepard survive the war against the reapers, he retired from the army and start a new life with his/her love interest (or alone if there is no LI) couple of year later, the reapers technologie floating around the galaxy fall in wrong hand, people get endoctrinated by it, new synthetics are created and a new war start (like the starkid says it would). the world where Shepard lives (with or without a LI) get attack by those new reaper-ish synthetics. Because Shepard didnt fight for a couple of year its a good enought reason to start leveling up again. Shepard paragon could want to fight again for the alliance because he/she fell guilty for the choice he made in ME3, Shepard renegade could simply be ******-off to see his/her house burning because off this new ennemie and want to put a bullet in there metal head.

from there, the majors decisions you've made in ME3 could have a good impact in the story. (krogan, quarian, etc...) maybe no original characters can join your team because they can be all dead in ME1,2,3 they could just be character that you can go see and talk, an example: (if garrus is alive) he could have a home on palaven, you can go see him, drink a beer and shoot some more bottle with him and talk about the past. or if Tali is alive and you have a romance with her, you can go see her, talk to her and have some romance option like in ME2 when you can ask her to come in your room, to drink, relax and huging each other on the bed lol, but this time there could be more things to do and expand with this idea. (they are not going to fight with you but you can always see them between 2 missions)

finaly the goal of the game could simply be, find where those synthetics are built and find a way to stop them. it could be to redeem yourself from your past decision or simply for vengence (Thats what I want for ME4 or if the indoctrination theorie is still real ME4 could only be Shepard wake up and gogogo the fight continue)

Mass Effect 4 will be based off of the child of Conrad Verner who he genetically altered to look just like his hero.

(This is a joke)

If ME4 is made, Conrad Verner MUST be the lead character!
