I have been thinking about the idea of a fourth mass effect game and these are the ways I think it could play out.

1) They could keep the lore and stories of the mass effect universe, but with a new cast of characters. This would be the easiest choice for the developers. They would be able to develop the universe further through a different perspectives and get to create new and interesting characters. However, we will no longer be able to interact with the original characters we have come to love over the series. Many of the fans will not like the new characters and therefore be alienated by the series. I feel that I would fall within this group. I have become too attached to the current characters to be willing to learn about a completely new cast of characters.

2) They could create a spin-off game with any of the minor/supporting characters as the main protagonist. This was an idea suggested by several fans, but it would not work. Mass effect is a heavily decision based game. The ability to make decisions as one of the supporting characters would change them to have a more paragon or renegade personality, which would not tie-in well with the existing story.

3) Finally, they could continue the series. Create new adventures and challenges for Shepard and his squadmates to take on. Perhaps a surviving cell of Cerberus returns to extract technology from reaper wreckage to create a weapon, or galactic tensions begin to rise as Shepard helps rebuild the galaxy, or even making new discoveries about the origins of the reapers and finding an even greater threat. Personally, I would like to see the next Mass effect game to be something like this. We would get to see the consequences of our actions throughout the series and keep the characters we know and love. However this comes with a huge obstacle: in most of the endings of ME3 Shepard dies. In the synthesis, Shepard dies combining all organic and synthetic life. In control, Shepard dies and becomes an intelligence that rules over the reapers. However in Destroy it is unclear whether he dies or not. On my playthrough, I was able to get the EMS 6000+ destroy ending and saw Shepard breathe amonst the rubble, presumably surviving the blast. In order to continue Shepard's story, Bioware would have to force all players into this ending. Thus alienating the significant amount of the fans who picked the other endings, but keeping Shepard's story going.

Ultimately  the choice of how to continue the series lies with the developers, not us fans. It is up to them to decide what direction they want  their series to head, whether it be a new story, a spin-off, or continuation. (I know I didn't talk about a prequel like "Shepard before becoming a spectre" or "Mass Effect: First Contact War". But I'm quite sick of Prequels, they have become too prominent in games and movies and don't really much add to the existing series. I really hope they don't do a Mass Effect equivalent to Halo: Reach) Anyways, those were just a few of my thoughts on a fourth mass effect game. If there are any ideas or facts you would like to bring to my attention pertaining to a fourth mass effect game, please keep adding them to this forum.

It's EA. They're gonna run the franchise into the ground if given the chance.

There'll almost definitely be another Mass Effect, but it won't focus on Shepard. Maybe it'll be set a few hundred years after ME3, with a new threat.

That, or there'll be a Mass Effect MMO. It's up to BioWare, but right now, they're focused on Multiplayer and ME3 DLC.

~Idea 1~
my take on the me3 destroy ending is this whole thing was to test Shepard and try to indoctrinate him/her by sovereign and the "breath" is actually Shepard back at the blitz war after breaking free form the reapers test (they created the mass relays why not be able to make that relay reverse time) Shepard remembers everything and tries to convince everyone of the coming war recruiting your "old" squad members convincing them of the truth and the only solution to save the galaxy destroy the citadel for good its the only way to prevent any of the mass effects from occurring thus ridding the galaxy from the reaper threat once and for all

~Idea 2~ set 18 -20 years after me3 Shepard is alive and married to his or her love interest they have a child who joins the alliance and becomes involved in a war ageist a entirely unheard of species bent on taking over the galaxy this new race is organic based the child becomes missing in action which causes Shepard and his/her love interest to A) find their child B) stop the coming war

This may have already been said, too many pages to scroll through.

I love Mass Effect, very much so. My favorite game series by far, however I feel that the saga should be left at a close with ME3.

Regardless of what ending one had, the forthcoming and tales of the Mass Effect universe I think is left to the interpretation of the player. Good stories should come to a close at some point, and I think this story has reached such a moment.

I think they should do a spin off.
Wing commander style, where you are flying ships (First Person View)

that would be brilliant!

Everyone wants another wing commander, and this game has the movie style graphics already....

Dunno, my Heather Shepard is as old as the trilogy itself and it is safe to say that a Mass Effect without Heather being the protagonist will be awkward...

I would like to see how she survived at Akuze. I would like to see her Tribunal after she let 300.000 Batarians perish in Arrival and be able to select her answers during that Tribunal.

Shepard, for every player is unique as in no one has the same Shepard. Shep is Mass Effect, not the other way around.

I think there should be, and it came start with Sheperd surviving the end of ME3 but Shep is now training soldiers in the N7 program but then some thing like another threat has attacked and they come to get shep and ask shep to get back into the game, however they should of thought the game structure out better so that there could be more in the series then just 3! ME if there is a 4th would be the same with out Sheperd in the game.

Better yet if Shep survives in ME3 there should of been a part of the extended cut DLC that shows them finding Shep and Shep actually living.

I'm totally expecting Bioware to come up with another Shep-centric Mass Effect in the future. A good writer can easily explain that ending away in such a fashion that Shep never even got hurt and we believing it.

And if they're really hurting for a spin-doctor, there's always David Lynch, ROFL.

If BIOWARE and EA Games want to correct the big mistake made in the MASS EFFECT 3, better creat another game!! - clean all the mistakes made. MASS EFFECT 2 is better in all aspect's than MASS EFFECT 3.

Bioware must go on with ME games... if sheppard story is over they can still go on with James... or do a spin-off with a new protagonist.... or use the indoctrination theory to create a DLC and show that technically sheppard is still alive... ME universe its too much good and extended to end it with only 3 games..... ME universe can go on with a infinite games and still be a good game. To create a perfect ME game they need to mix ME1 with ME2 with M3...... good city-town-world exploration, with a perfect shoot sistem , and with a perfect dialogue sistem. (i need to see quarians face!!!!)

Personally i hope their next project is an Enhanced ME1, but ill throw out my thoughts on a future Mass Effect game.

An open world RPG seems very promising, given the massive amounts of detail in the Mass Effect Universe. If it combined the epic scope of an Elder Scrolls game, and the open setting combat experience of Halo, topped off with Bioware's trademark storytelling and character creation--- GOTY.

I can tell you right now, the next ME game will focus on past events. There's a lot of juicy stuff in past lore that can be expanded and turned into a full game.

Not sure if this was suggested prior; one way that ME4 could be made and at least keep Shepard is to have another resurrection event.

What I specifically have in mind is that there is some VI like thing (essentially a brain tape) at the Cerberus base that is the core Shepard persona (hinted at in ME3). There is some major crisis some 700 years after the events of ME3 and Liara (and Wrex or Grunt) basically drive some program to either grow or make a new body for Shepard and load the brain tape into the new Shepard.

This solves the issue of continuing with Shepard and at least some of the merry band. It also by default closes most aspects related to specific characters of how ME3 ended as most of the survivors from the Reaper war are in turn long past.

The problems I see with this are:
1) How to merge which choice (destroy, control, or synthesis) for a given game so that they all start at the same point. A way to finesse this is to say all endings eventually led to a singularity event merging organic and synthetic, synthesis just got there faster.

2) How to handle the Krogan. Again there could be some hand waiving getting to regardless of your choice the genophage is eventually cured (I have never followed that path personally so I do not now how sabotaging the cure plays out).

3) Presuming folks want Shepard back then they may also want the other shorted lived sidekicks returning (e.g. Garrus, Tali). This could also be accomplished with some cloning story, but of these three bridges (the solutions to items 1 to 3) to maintain continuity this strains credulity the most for me.

I feel that Bioware didn't fully comprehend what a behemoth game this would become, and how upset all the fans would be after the last installment. I think the story ends both in the original and the DLC the way it should end. There's a myriad of hints throughtout all the games that eventually evolve into the only choices you can really make considering the entire games history. It would be interesting to see a younger Shepard and how that character became that particular person in all the old battles that you hear Shepard and the crew recount. But then again-Star Wars did the same thing, and not many people were too happy with those consequences either. Regardless it's Biowares game, they are the "creators" and they can take it further, or they can gracefully let it go. I think it would be incredibly difficult to go on with the series without the Commander, the character has reached the highest pinnacle it can achieve-there really isn't anywhere to go after any of the choices, even if your Shepard lives-who is he going to fight after the Reapers? It would take one hell of an entire new storyline not to mention an enemy equal to, or able to surpass the Reapers to get that process going-that's what I think anyway.

I have 2 ideas that I think would be amazing for a new mass effect game but I don't know if they have been said before.

1. It takes place before mass effect 1 and you play as an unnamed hero (just because I haven't thought of a name) and some of your squad members are Nihlus, Saren and Admiral Anderson. And you are there to see Anderson to become a spectre. Close to the end You get to choose who you want to side with, either Saren or Nihlus, and if you choose Nihlus, you get Anderson and support from the council, but if you choose Saren you get Matriarch Benezia. I still haven't figured out the end yet, but I think it would be really fun to play.

2. You can play as your own Prothean that you create, With this idea it brings a whole new set of abilities and stuff, and maybe instead of classes you can choose your own embodyment, just like Javik embodies revenge. It could also bring a whole new set of non primitive species, because during the protheans time every other species that we know was very primitive, and as a tie-in you could have Javik as a squadmember and you can learn about the species before the protheans time
