Keep the choices you made to finish number 3. Also take in the final relationship you carried in number 3. Maybe a few other key issues but start number 4 as the child of Shepard. Struggling in a damaged world, being pressured by the memory of your fathers historical standing. Maybe your choices in rebuilding or even allowing yourself to lead an evil side, linking up with previous favorites. Either way keeping a little history from 3 massive games will give dedicated fans a hook, but with 20 years passing it allows a fresh world with new issues.
I just feel letting go of what brought mass effect to the people should be integrated, oh and maybe running into an old Shepard imported from our save games could really hook my emotional link to my past choices

thats the sort of thing i'd like to see.
(SPOILERS)
i for one wasn't disappointed with the ending for me3, iactually liked it, a very emotive piece of writing, i had guessed what would happen to shep. but the mass relays O.O that was the biggest thing for me, no more inter-stellar flight. all that knowledge and experience and freedom sealed off in a heart beat. all those races on each others planets and no way to find out whats happening. and the citadel closing for good.

It might be a different view, but as far as bioware stated "Shepards story ends in number 3" but with the universe in total turmoil after number 3 I feel that something as original for first players of mass effect and integrated as these were for players could be something like this:

If that was the case you could imagine something inherently creepy happenning such as romancing Liara or something.

One of the few things that Bioware could give me to redeem the awful endings (besides fixing them) is a continuation of Shepard's story.

As an added bonus perhaps allow the new character to have a choice to romance a select few from the original Normandy (Liara?). Whatever the case, should they make a ME4, Bioware has my support. It would be interesting to see what they cook up.

It's possible, but I do believe they said that ME3 is the end of Shepard's story.
If there's a ME4, it'll be a story about someone else.
they said the same for halo 4 and look what will be released this holiday.....
my attitude is never say never because shepard has becoming basicly an icconin gaming so i dont think mass effect will sell without him or her

I was thinking a brotherhood style game for the mass effect series.
Likely this game will be set from the very begginning of Mass Effect 1 to the ressurection of Shepherd at the beginning of Mass effect 2. The game will start on Eden Prime, you play as a Cerberus commander(Who's background is of your choice) sent on a mission to investigate Eden Prime. With such a major artifact as the Prothean beacon, being uncovered you would of expected Cerberus to be in the race to get it, for human interests only. Anyway your character gets caught up in events, like the Alliance, Cerberus fails to prep it's troops about the potential threats. Perhaps you even come into contact with Nihlus or Saren or even both.
Anyway you return to the Illusive man with the mission a failure. Meanwhile the Illusive man notes how Saren is seemingly half synthetic, he sends you on a mission to hunt him down while not telling you of his real motives. From here on out you practically shadow Shepherd's progress. Investigating leads, visting perhaps more shady characters to obtain leads. You are practically the Illusive man's henchman, before he aquired Shepherd and of course Kai Leng. He gives you a nice ship, information on possible squad members etc.
Just because your character works for Cerberus doesn't automatically make him a racist, he could be working there because the alliance screwed him over like so many other Ceberus employees. Wouldn't it feel epic if we. while on your own respective mission, to see a giant battle going on above you at the citadel? However this would only be the first half of the game, in the second half, your job is to piece together what happened to Shepherd in the circumstances leading to his death. As an example, helping "Arkangel" do his work in the citadel in order to find information. Maybe even bringing together the crew again for Shepards arrival at what was the beginning of ME2.
I feel this would give the fans a certain amount of closure after seeing atleast what happened of the galaxy between those two years. It would also give Bioware the excuse to use fan favourites such as Garrus, Wrex or Tali in large roles once again.

Just finished ME3 today and I have to say I liked the ending(s). I would love to have seen some more impressions from rebuilding Earth, Thessia and other devastated planets, but it wasn't as far as disappointing as I thought it would be after noticing some ongoing discussions.
As for ME4: I hope there will be a sequel. While playing ME3, I always felt a bit like Kaidan might play a bigger role in a future game (or Ashley, depending on the Vermire decision...). Just like Shepard, he's a spectre now, he's been in the game from ME1 on, he's the most Shepard-like character and either Shep or FemShep could romance him, making him quite a versatile character (innuendo intended). I think he'd be ideally suited. A son or daughter of Shepard would be hard to explain if you chose a gay romance interest (like I did). Don't want to speculate on a possible plot, though a sequel would offer more possibilites and more freedom like prequels or parallel stories. And I hope they don't do a FPS or RTS, the storytelling would definitely suffer...
